"You let that one out too soon–"
"You should have stored more energy in that–"
"You should try that one again from the beginning–"
"That was almost right…"
Magic lessons had progressed to a point that they actually became difficult for me. For Rudy they were finally a proper challenge and before I knew it, he was way ahead of me in studies. Classes had to be split between us after a certain point because what Rudy was learning now was above what I could grasp, and what I was learning was below him to the point it was boring for his mind.
I expected something like this to happen– I knew that for all our similarities as twins, Rudy was stronger than me at magic. Roxy would keep saying that we were both gifted, that she'd never seen such promising young mages– a lot of words were said, but the gap got too large. There was a clear difference in level between us.
I knew this was going to happen one day, but even then it stings like nothing else. I studied hard, I played catch up for years, I focused hard and I spent more time practicing than even Rudy did, and somehow he still pulled ahead. It did something to me I didn't think was possible. It made me feel small and inadequate.
One part of me gained a deeper respect of Rudy, but another resented him and for what? Being more talented? Being lucky? Just what was I resenting? Just what was so bad about him being better than magic at me? It wasn't like it made him better than me or more talented than me, after all, I was ahead of him in our sword studies.
Maybe it was his lack of interest in sword studies that made it sting so bad. Maybe it was just me being emotional. There was a week that went by where I kept messing up again and again and where I had hit my limit in the middle of a lesson. It was one I had been made to go over for two days and still I hadn't pulled off the spell necessary to move on– so I snapped. I threw a fit and stormed off in the middle of the lesson. I told myself I needed to step away, but I was being disrespectful to Roxy.
She must have caught on to how I was feeling, because she didn't scold me, and she didn't try to pull me back into it. She just let me pout like the child I was being, but really, she didn't deserve the attitude.
"Hey, are you alright?" a voice called out from behind me.
I turned to see Aneste standing over me.
"I'm okay."
"Yeah, but you walked out on your lesson. You never walk out on your lessons."
I let out a frustrated sigh.
"I'm not talking about it. If you're trying to figure out why I walked out it isn't going to work. Just forget about it and leave me alone. I just need some time."
Aneste's bright blue eyes widened with worry.
"No you don't! Just tell me and I can help!"
"Aneste! Stop it! I'm not in the mood!"
"Then let's talk about it!"
"Later!"
Aneste stood then shocked, stepping away and then forward again. She seemed desperate to help.
"I'm not leaving!"
I hit my limit. I knew she was worried, but my stress was at its peak.
"ANESTE! GO HOME!" I snapped.
Aneste froze. She was stunned into silence. I took too long to respond. By the time I realized I had shaken her, she had turned her back and had started walking away quickly. I didn't mean to yell at her, but she wasn't reading the room at all! What is she?! A child?!
My heart sank. She was. She was a year older than me, only six. She doesn't know better… not yet anyway. I messed up, but well… It was a tense moment for me. She was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
A few minutes later Rudy approached me. By that time the anger was gone. All that was left was pure disdain towards myself. For the first time since being reborn I felt depressed and anxious. Rudy sat beside me leaving only a little room between us.
"So what did Aneste do?"
I scoffed and turned my face away from him.
"Aneste didn't do anything. I just yelled at her for nothing."
"You? Yell at someone for nothing? Maybe you'd yell at me for sure, but anyone else?"
"I was moody. I didn't want to talk. She pushed me and I told her to stop. She didn't and I blew up."
"Okay."
I looked more forward.
"That's it? Just okay?"
"What do you want me to say?"
"That I screwed up? That what I did was wrong? That Aneste will be fine? Just anything than your stupid okay."
"My okays aren't stupid."
"They sound stupid."
"You're being mean now."
"Maybe you deserve it."
"I don't."
I punched his shoulder. He smiled.
"Feeling better now?"
I turned towards him. I gave him a slight nod.
"A little. How am I going to fix this Rudy?"
Rudy shrugged his shoulders.
"I think friendships are supposed to be a little rough at times. You can have fights and disagreements, but you have to make up afterwards. You can't just feel sorry later and then never make the effort to apologize. People will abandon you like they did–… like what happens to some people."
I looked forward and down.
"Can you go with me?" I asked softly.
"What?"
"Can you go with me when I apologize?"
"Aneste went home though."
"Then let's go to her house."
"Outside the yard? No thank you."
"Oh yeah. I forgot you don't do that yet."
"What do you mean by yet?!"
"You'll see."
"I could ask Master to deliver the message for you. She could tell her you want to apologize and I could be here with you when she comes. How does that sound?"
"It sounds like a dumb compromise, but okay."
"What even set you off in the first place?"
"You."
"ME?"
"It's complicated."
"Try telling me anyway!"
"I just feel like a failure because I can't keep up with you. I can't get that spell down that Roxy keeps trying to tell me and it's making me so mad! I should be able to do it, but it keeps losing its form for some reason!"
"You're upset because you're behind me?"
"We're twins! Aren't we supposed to be equals or something like that?!"
"You're better at sword fighting than me."
"That's different."
"Maybe it is… but you've already forgotten about yesterday haven't you?"
"What about yesterday?"
"Aneste was finally able to make a water ball."
The memory washed over me, but it wasn't clicking just what he was getting at.
"Did anything else happen yesterday? Because the only other thing I remember is going over that same spell again and again."
Rudy suddenly gave me a look– it was one of his serious ones.
"Aneste made a major breakthrough in magic. She's only been able to cast fire spells up to this point and was super excited about finally getting the hang of other elements. She was so happy when she was telling you, but you were kind of cold towards her, kind of like what you did just now."
I froze.
"Oh… I didn't realize… I was just so frustrated that…"
I buried my head between my legs. I finally got it. Here Aneste was celebrating over a major breakthrough, and here I was pouting over some dumb spell that I've only spent two days on. I couldn't have been more self centered even if I tried.
"I really messed up Rudy."
"Yeah, but we can still fix this. I'll go tell Master the situation right now."
Rudy stood up and about an hour later, true to his word, there was a knock on the door and a call for me to come to it. At the door stood Aneste, and nearby was Rudy ready to assist.
"So Aneste… Leah feels bad about earlier… so she needs to say what she wants to."
I looked at him and then Aneste.
"I'm sorry about earlier. My outburst was completely uncalled for."
Aneste shifted awkwardly.
"I'm sorry too. For making you upset."
"You didn't make me upset… but you also didn't back off when I asked you to, so next time… if I say to go away… please just give me some time. I didn't mean to yell at you, my emotions just got the better of me."
Aneste looked ashamed and shrugged her shoulders. Rudy then stepped in with a mediator stance.
"Okay, that's enough of that you two, are you friends again, or you going to let things be awkward and dicey from now on?"
I gave him a dirty look.
"What do you mean by that?"
"Either hug and kiss, or we can beat each other off– I mean up!"
Aneste gave off a look of confusion.
"What is he–?"
"Don't listen to him! He's just being dumb!" I interjected. "So Rudy said you learned a water ball?"
"Yeah, I also learned how to make a ball of earth as well."
"Both water and earth magic?! Aneste! You're doing great!"
"Really?"
"Really!"
"Hey, I can do those things too, where's my praise?" Rudy interjected.
"Oh shut up!"
Aneste let out a laugh, and once I heard it, that was the cue for me that things were going to be fine. Aneste walked over to Rudy and gave him a pat on the head. It was then I realized how much taller she was than him.
"I'll give you some praise, Rudy! Good job making earth and water spells!"
Rudy smiled awkwardly then rolled his eyes.
"Okay, nevermind. I was only joking! Sheesh! It sounds so patronizing!"
"You were the one who asked!" Aneste insisted.
Aneste then looked at me.
"I know I'm not as smart as you and Rudy, but I'm getting there. I think the more time I spend with the both of you, the stronger I get."
Rudy raised an eyebrow.
"The both of us?"
Aneste nodded.
"Yeah. Both of you are smart in different ways."
I grabbed Aneste's hands.
"Don't worry about being behind. Me and Rudy will help you whatever you need and that's a promise. Also, if I'm being too mean, don't be afraid to call me out on it. I don't want to mess this up."
"Mess what up?"
"This. Our friendship. You're my friend Aneste. I don't won't to create a path in life where you aren't."
Aneste's eyes widened like she didn't understand completely but on a deeper level– was starting to grasp those kinds of concepts.
"Sounds good to me. Let's try and stay friends as long as we can then!"
Rudy huffed proudly.
"You two are so cute. Is this what young love looks like?"
I punched his gut. Aneste scolded me after that. She really is starting to empathize with Rudy more, but that's okay. It just makes me feel more comfortable punching him for some reason, like the universe is in balance.
The days are getting heavier… maybe it's because I'm getting older, but when I look at Roxy it just tends to feel heavier. She had this proud look on her face these days that's mixed with a tinge of sadness. This would be around the time that Rudy would graduate, but maybe she'll stay longer since I'm behind. I can only hope.
