"What was that?" I asked, coming around the corner, making Rudy nearly jump out of his skin.

"What was what?!" He responded like a mouse caught in a trap.

"The thing… with water." I said pointing to the bucket full of water.

 "Nothing."

I crept around the corner and into the room with a gentle sway that was almost sexy, but on a girl my age it couldn't be anything other than cute.

"Can I watch you do nothing?" I asked with wide puppy dog eyes.

Rudy gave a wince and then sighed.

"Fine. But I promise you it's boring."

I walked over and stood about a meter from Rudy. I glanced at the book he was reading. It was definitely a language I couldn't read… but it did look a bit similar to Japanese, maybe that was why he could read it, or maybe his young mind was fast at learning. In all regards it was beyond me.

 "You can read?" I asked.

"Yeah. It's not easy, but it is simple once you start to understand."

 "Wow, Rudy is smart."

"You know what? Maybe I am! Maybe I'm a genius!"

 "What's gen-nius?"

"Er… it's a really smart person." he explained.

"Oh! Makes sense!" I exclaimed with my fake enlightened tone.

I looked at the book again and felt my heart tighten. I really couldn't read it, but Rudy could. As much as I hate to admit it, I'm not going to be able to catch up to him anytime soon, at least not without his help. I need Rudy to teach me how to read.

Magic is something that runs naturally in the family thanks to our mother, Zenith, but there are limits to everything, and this seemed to be mine. I'm starting to realize I'm not as smart as I thought I was and that Rudeus Greyrat is actually a lot more competent than I gave him credit. I figured anyone in his situation could probably do better than him, but now I realize whatever he did in his previous life has given him specific skills to thrive in this one.

He isn't just a jobless nobody. He paid attention to very specific things in his previous life and now instead of wasting those skills he's putting them to use in an environment where they can serve him well.

 "Rudy. I can't read." I admitted.

Rudy gave me a face of shock for the briefest moment, grinned, but then caught himself and began coughing.

"Well of course not. You're only two years old."

"So are you?" I reminded him.

His face went red and he began grunting.

"I'm… a little bit different Leah. Yeah. I'm just… just smart for my age I guess." He stammered.

Seeing him get flustered was adorable. He forgot who he was for the briefest moment and I called him out on it. This is cute, but this isn't going anywhere.

"If you can read, maybe I can too. Can you show me how big brother?"

At the words big brother, his face lit up. I couldn't tell if it was motivated by some sort of perverted thought or if he was just genuinely touched by my words. Regardless, he nodded quickly.

"You see this character right here?"

 "Yeah?"

"Well it makes this sound, and this one right here makes this sound. When you put them both together, they sound out the word magic!"

"So this word right here says magic?"

 "Exactly!"

"Wow, this word happens lots in this book."

"That's why I taught you that one first! It's easier to learn the other words when you know the word that occurs the most!"

Wow, so his reading really wasn't for show. He really did have to figure this out himself and he wasn't just naturally born with it. After he decided we'd done enough for the day he gave me a super serious look and grabbed my hands.

"Leah, you can't tell anyone what we were doing, or what we were reading, okay?"

 "Huh?"

"Well magic can be bad, so until we know if it's good I want you to keep it a secret okay?"

I gave him a confused look and then nodded. What the hell was he talking about?

The next few days I watched him try to make water balls over and over, and he helped me learn how to read bit by bit. When I had a handle on the basics, he taught me how to make my first water ball. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be, and I could barely make a few drops after several tries. Maybe I didn't inherit momma's genes after all.

After a few weeks, it really felt like bonding… the kind I had never experienced before, and it was with a person I considered to be rather terrible.

Maybe I had him wrong. Maybe Rudy wasn't so bad after all, or at least, he seemed to be a pretty good brother and a really good teacher. Duh. Of course he was a good teacher! He taught Eris all sorts of things and taught Sylphie how to be an incantationless mage! He helped give emotional support to Norn when she was getting looked down at school, and helped keep his father calm when he was worried sick looking for Zenith.

I guess I got caught up in all the online discourse surrounding the story and let it blind me to what was actually there. When I made up my mind to support him, I did it with the expectation that he would be a horrible person to work beside and get along with, but so far… I think we get along well.

Me and Rudy had to share a room together… which would have been really hard and awkward if he was older, but with him being a toddler I didn't feel like I was in any danger. His presence is actually almost comforting, and even though we don't share the same bed I sneaked into his bed one night just out of curiosity sake.

When I snuggled beside him, something awakened inside me. This was something I'd never experienced before, something that made me crave more. This kid… I should have felt repulsed at him knowing what I know, but more and more, my body and mind is cementing the fact that this is my brother now and that he wants nothing more than to be a good brother to me.

After that night, I started sneaking into his bed most nights and even when he wrapped his arms around me, I didn't feel uncomfortable, in fact, it made me feel safe, safer than I ever had in either of my lives. The fact I knew these days were fleeting pushed me to a point where there wasn't hardly a night I didn't crawl into Rudy's bed with him. Bad days were coming, and while I could, I wanted to feel safe in his arms.

***

The first key plot point came on a sunny day when we were three years old. I could just about read on my own by that point, and both of our manna pools had grown quite large in my opinion. There was a loud blast, and then there was a hole in the wall.

Momma and papa came running into the room and after they figured out what had happened, momma became filled with thrill at her discovery of Rudy's talent. Papa was less thrilled.

"We can't get a tutor for Rudy, but we can get one for Leah. It looks like she's been practicing as well!" He reasoned."

"Leah wasn't the one using intermediate magic and blasting holes in the wall!" she shot back.

"No, but she could be! We had a deal! Any girl learns magic, and any boy learns swordplay!" he demanded.

"I wanna do both." I chimed in.

They both stopped and looked at the both of us.

"Listen Leah… it won't be very effective for the both of you if you divide your studies." Paul tried to explain.

"Wait! I can do it! I can do both!" Rudy exclaimed.

Paul and Zenith looked at each other and sighed.

"How about we have them study magic in the morning and swordplay in the afternoon?" Zenith suggested.

"Oh fine! But if this doesn't work, it's on you. If neither of them accelerate in their studies, we'll just have to cut our losses and make only one of them a mage and the other one a swordfighter."

"That sounds reasonable to me!" Zenith agreed.

A decision was then made to send for a magic tutor, which I knew would end up being Roxy Migurdia. Not my favorite girl, but maybe I would change my mind if I actually got to know her in person just like with Rudy. As we snuggled up close together that night, I felt him grab my chest.

 "Ow!" I cried out.

 "Sorry." he said letting go.

"Why did you do that?" I asked. I knew why, I was just playing the part.

"Well… I uh… it's… because I saw papa do that with momma. Yeah. That's why."

 Bullshit.

"Why does papa do that Rudy?"

"Well… because he loves momma… and grown ups like to touch like that."

 Really? That's your reason?

"So you did that because you love me then?"

"Not exactly… but did it really hurt that much?"

I wanted to shout yes, but my voice wouldn't come out. In all honesty it didn't actually hurt, but at the same time I couldn't encourage him to keep doing it. I ended up blushing against my will.

"I just didn't like it." I finally managed to say.

"Okay. But just so you know, all the best girls like to be touched like that."

What an idiot. He's got no idea what he's talking about, but is he really going to give up touching me like that? Is that really all it takes? I wanted to kick him, but that felt out of character for me. I settled for biting my cheeks and huffing.

 "Good night Rudy." I seethed.

"Sorry for touching you like that, Leah. Next time I'll ask." he whispered.

It doesn't matter if you ask. I'm not letting you touch me. Even if you're gentle. I'm your sister, and we're three!
