Sairis's POV
The king sighed. He leaned forward and rested his arms on the table and looked at her with the direct and honest attention of a man who was not going to dress this up. "I owe you an apology," he said.
"I'm glad you think the palace is the safest place in the capital. I could not keep your daughter safe inside my own walls and for that I am deeply sorry."
Lady Taal looked at the king for a long moment before nodding once.
"Then tell me," she said quietly. "Tell me everything. Because I am one second away from tearing this entire room apart."
The king glanced briefly at Loreen before looking back at Lady Taal. "Your daughter did not die from her illness," he said.
Lady Taal looked at him. Something moved behind her eyes. "My daughter was perfectly well when I sent her here," she muttered.
