Chapter 58 - chapter 58:TheSafety

The heavy glass doors of the Vance estate slid open with a soft,

expensive whisper, sealing out the noise of the world behind them.

When Lili opened her eyes, the jagged rocks and the suffocating grey mist of the mountain ridge were entirely gone.

Instead, she was staring at the familiar, polished marble floors and the warm,

ambient architectural lighting of Leo's true home.

The air here didn't taste of frost or ash; it tasted of filtered air, expensive cedar wood, and safety.

They had finally, officially returned.

Leo didn't let her feet touch the ground.

He pulled Lili closer against his chest, his arms locked securely beneath her as he carried her across the grand foyer.

The stiff, heavy wedding velvet she had been forced to wear by Aaryan was crumpled against Leo's black tactical gear.

It was a sharp, conflicting visual—the white shroud of a forced tradition rubbing against the dark armor of a modern soldier.

But the grip he held her with was entirely gentle, a silent reassurance that the nightmare on the ridge had reached its absolute end.

As they walked into the main living room, two figures rose quickly from the leather sofas.

It was Luca and Sophia.

They had been waiting for hours, surrounded by blinking monitors and satellite feeds, tracing the extraction team's flight path back from the mountains.

The moment Lili saw them,

a bright flush of crimson crept up her neck and stained her cheeks.

She felt suddenly, intensely shy.

She was being carried like a bride in front of Leo's brother made her want to hide her face entirely in the crook of Leo's neck.

Her fingers tightened on his shoulder, trying to shrink into the fabric of his jacket.

Luca took one look at them, and a massive, teasing grin spread across his face.

He leaned against the back of the sofa, crossing his arms with an amused sigh.

"Well, well, well," Luca chuckled, his voice echoing in the vast,

high-ceilinged room.

"Now that is what I call a beautiful view.

I see the high-intensity rescue mission included a premium carrying service, Leo.

Should I call the press to capture this, or are you two just rehearsing your moves for the actual wedding?"

Sophia quickly stepped forward, smirking as she gently swatted Luca's arm, though her eyes were full of profound relief.

"Shut up, Luca.

Let them breathe. Look at her, she's exhausted."

"Hey, I'm just saying!" Luca laughed, throwing his hands up in mock defense.

"We've been sitting here for three straight hours checking the telemetry and waiting for the chopper to clear the valley.

I think I earned the right to make a little fun of my big brother looking like a romance novel hero on a rescue mission.

"Leo didn't slow down his pace.

He didn't smile, but the icy tension that had gripped his jaw for the last twenty-four hours finally began to thaw.

He looked down at Lili, whose face was still burning with embarrassment,

and then glanced at his brother with a flat, authoritative glare that instantly silenced the room.

"She's exhausted, Luca," Leo said, his deep, gravelly voice carrying a weight that brooked no argument.

"She's been through a stone tower, a forced march, and a chapel standoff. The teasing can wait until tomorrow."

He stopped for a brief second, looking over at Sophia.

His expression softened just a fraction.

"Are her parents settled?"

"They're in the west wing guest suites," Sophia answered gently, her voice a

comforting anchor in the cavernous room.

"The medical team checked them over.

They've eaten, they're warm, and they are sleeping soundly.

They know she's safe with you now, Lili. You don't have to worry about them anymore."

Lili let out a soft, ragged breath she felt she'd been holding for days.

*Safe. They're actually safe.* The leverage Aaryan had held over her life had been completely disassembled in a single afternoon.

"Thank you, Sophia," Leo said quietly.

Without another word, he turned away from the living room, ignoring Luca's lingering grin, and carried Lili up the grand sweeping staircase toward the master wing.

He walked past the corridors of glass and steel, moving deeper into the absolute privacy of their own sanctuary, away from the jokes, away from the trauma, and away from the ghosts of the past.

The master bedroom was massive, minimalist, and smelling faintly of rain and luxury.

The large floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the glittering city skyline,

a thousand tiny electric lights that felt a world away from the dark, eating ravine of Aaryan's house.

Here, there were no guards on the perimeter who belonged to an enemy.

There were no iron gates designed to keep her from the light.

Leo walked to the side of the massive, king-sized bed.

With a gentleness that seemed entirely impossible for a man who had just broken through a chapel roof with a rifle at his hip,

he lowered her onto the soft, silk sheets.

Lili sat there, her legs dangling over the edge, the heavy velvet gown pooling around her ankles like discarded armor.

She looked small and pale in the center of his world, her dark hair tumbling out of the silver combs that had been meant to bind her to a madman.

Leo knelt before her on the floor, his hands resting firmly on her knees.

He reached up, his large, calloused thumb gently tracing the faint red mark on her wrist where Aaryan's grip had been too tight during the forced walk to the car.

His eyes were incredibly dark, swirling with a protective heat and a lingering, lethal anger that hadn't entirely faded from his system.

"It's over, Lili," he whispered, his voice a low, steady vibration in the quiet of the room.

"Look at me.

No one is coming through that door.

No one is sliding an iron bolt to trap you.

You're in my house now, and my word is the only law here."

"I know," she whispered back, her fingers reaching out automatically to touch the faint smudge of soot on his jawline.

"You look like you fought a war, Leo."

"I did," Leo said, a ghost of a genuine smile touching his lips as he leaned into her touch.

"And I'd burn the city down and fight it again tomorrow if anyone ever thought they could take you from me.

I told you, you are the narrator now.

I'm just the man who enforces your script."

He stood up slowly, the physical toll of the rescue finally showing in the slight stiffness of his shoulders.

He began to unbuckle the heavy tactical vest, letting it drop to the plush carpet with a dull, heavy thud.

He unfastened his watch, his tactical gloves, and placed his weapon on the high shelf of the secure nightstand.

"I'm going to use the washroom to get fresh and wash the mountain off my skin," Leo said, his voice dropping to a softer, gentler tone.

He looked down at her one last time, ensuring she was comfortable.

"Don't move. Don't think about the ridge.

Just rest. I'll be out in a few minutes."

Lili nodded, her eyes following him as he walked into the ensuite bathroom.

A moment later, the sound of rushing water filled the silence—a steady, domestic, comforting sound that made the stone tower feel like a nightmare from a different lifetime.

Left alone, Lili sat on the edge of the mattress.

She looked down at her hands, running her thumb over the ringless finger where Aaryan's heavy gold band had briefly been forced.

She felt the incredible softness of the mattress beneath her, the warmth of the central heating, and the steady, ticking reality that she was finally, completely free.

. She wasn't the victim of a car crash or a ghost hidden in a coastal cottage.

As the steam began to billow out from the edges of the washroom door,

Lili kicked off the heavy boots Aaryan had made her wear.

She leaned back against the pillows, her eyes fixed on the door, waiting for Leo to return to her side.

The silence of the mansion was no longer a cage; it was the quiet before the beginning of the rest of their lives.
