After bidding farewell to Duplica and her Ditto, Ash and his companions arrived at a forest renowned for its towering, flourishing Exeggutor Exeggutor Forest.
It just so happened that a grand, bustling carnival was being held there. Colorful flags and stalls were everywhere, and the air was thick with the aroma of delicious food and the sound of cheerful music.
"Wow! A carnival!" Misty's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Let's go have some fun!"
Ash and Brock were swept up in the festive atmosphere as well, and the three of them immediately blended into the crowd. Ash and Brock were even pulled away by enthusiastic dancers, joining in with some clumsy yet energetic steps.
While the two boys were immersed in the dance, the observant Misty noticed a lonely figure in a corner. It was a young man wearing a somewhat faded magician's robe and a tall top hat, muttering to himself in front of an empty box. Curious, Misty stepped forward to talk to him.
As it turned out, this magician, named Melvin, had just been abandoned by his assistant, who had also run off with all his most important performance props. Now, without an assistant or proper gear, he had lost nearly all his confidence in performing.
"Please, young lady, could you fill in as my assistant? Just for a little while!" Seeing Misty, Melvin pleaded as if grasping for a lifeline.
Kindhearted as she was, Misty looked at Melvin's dejected yet earnest expression. After a moment's hesitation, she eventually agreed to his request.
However, Melvin's magic show was... a complete disaster. Without sophisticated props and with clumsy sleight of hand, his "vanishing act" nearly left Misty stuck in a box, and the "levitation act" resulted in her falling flat on her face when the mechanism failed.
The audience hissed and booed, and the carnival organizer, fuming with rage, fired Melvin on the spot.
"I'm sorry... I dragged you into this..." Melvin huddled in a corner clutching his broken props, looking utterly miserable. "I really am a failure of a magician..."
Ash and Brock hurried over, having finally learned the situation. Looking at the disheartened Melvin, Ash didn't mock him. Instead, he stepped forward and patted his shoulder. "One failure doesn't mean anything. The important thing is never to give up on your dreams. Your magic might need more practice, but we could see your passion. Let us help you find a way!"
Ash's encouragement caused Melvin to lift his head, a faint glimmer of hope reigniting in his eyes.
Just then, a pack of Exeggutor emerged from nowhere, marching toward the center of the carnival with heavy, mindless steps! There were dozens of them, massive in size, toppling stalls and tearing down banners wherever they passed. People scrambled to get out of the way as the joyous celebration teetered on the brink of ruin.
"It's an Exeggutor stampede!" Brock shouted. "They look like they're being drawn by something, or maybe they're sleepwalking?"
They had to be stopped! Ash immediately sent out Charmander, intending to use fire to block the Exeggutor's path.
"Charmander, use Ember on the ground in front of them!"
Charmander breathed out a flurry of flames with all its might. However, against a vast squad of Exeggutor who held an elemental advantage over it that tiny Ember seemed insignificant. On the contrary, it drew the attention of several Exeggutor, who swung their heads, preparing to launch a Seed Bomb.
Seeing the danger, and driven by the desire to protect its trainer and companions, the suppressed power within Charmander's body erupted! A brilliant white light instantly enveloped its form.
Evolution Charmeleon!
The evolved Charmeleon was larger, and the flame on its tail burned far more fiercely. It exuded an impressive aura as it let out a thunderous roar, intimidating some of the approaching Exeggutor.
Ash felt the surging power within Charmeleon and the rock-solid bond between them a result of their long-term Aura communication and understanding. He knew this was the perfect moment to further enhance its strength. He immediately called out in his mind: System, exchange for High-Quality Charcoal!
[Consumed 500 World Origin Points. Successfully exchanged for [High-Quality Charcoal]. Already equipped directly to Charmeleon.]
[Current World Origin Points: 18,600]
A warm, potent wave of fire energy instantly surged through Charmeleon's limbs. The flame on its tail shot upward with a roar, its color deepening. Feeling the power bestowed by its trainer, its loyalty and fighting spirit reached their peak. There wasn't the slightest sign of the disobedience that usually followed such an evolution.
"Great job, Charmeleon!" Ash's confidence soared. "Let's show them our power! Use Fire Spin!"
Equipped with the High-Quality Charcoal, Charmeleon unleashed a Fire Spin that was wider in range and far hotter than before. The scorching wall of flame successfully halted the Exeggutor march, trapping them temporarily in place.
"We'll help too!" Brock sent out Vulpix the one Susie had entrusted to him to use Flamethrower, while Misty had Starmie use Water Gun to moisten the Exeggutor's dry roots, trying to snap them out of their daze.
Standing to the side, Melvin watched Ash and his Pokémon fighting with everything they had to protect the carnival. Seeing the raw power Charmeleon displayed under its trainer's command moved him deeply. He remembered why he wanted to be a magician in the first place: to bring joy and surprise to people.
"I... I can't give up either!" Melvin suddenly stood up. He gathered the scattered colorful cloths and his remaining props, his gaze becoming firm. "Everyone! Look this way! The real magic is just beginning!"
He took a deep breath, pouring all his focus and passion into his work. Though he lacked complex machinery, he used optical illusions and clever hand movements to create a massive phantom using the colorful cloths. This successfully drew the attention of the majority of the Exeggutor, guiding them back toward the forest.
His performance was simple, yet it was filled with sincerity and quick-witted wisdom a different kind of "magic."
Under the combined efforts of Ash's Charmeleon (boosted by the High-Quality Charcoal) and the others' physical interference, alongside Melvin's determined and ingenious magic, the Exeggutor squad was successfully led back into the depths of the forest. The crisis at the carnival was averted.
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, cheering for the bravery of Ash's group and Melvin's heroic stand. The carnival organizer, realizing he had been too hasty before, re-invited Melvin to perform and promised to fund the purchase of new props.
Melvin shook Ash's hand gratefully. "Thank you, Ash! You made me realize that real magic isn't about how flashy your props are it's about a heart that never gives up and the determination to bring happiness to others!"
"The fact that you understand that means you've truly mastered it!" Ash patted his shoulder.
Charmander had successfully evolved into a powerful and loyal Charmeleon, enhanced by the High-Quality Charcoal, and the dejected magician Melvin had reclaimed his confidence and his dreams. With double the joy, Ash and his friends bid farewell to the lively carnival at Exeggutor Forest and continued their journey.
