Chapter 29 - Ch29: Beneath The Forest

Chapter 29: Beneath the Forest

Alicia stayed completely still.

Her awareness remained locked beneath the Deep Forest Spiritual Vein, tracing the faint pulse she had just sensed.

It had only lasted a moment.

But it had definitely been real.

And more importantly—

it had not come from the Spiritual Vein itself.

That meant one thing.

There was something else down there.

Something buried beneath the forest floor.

Something that had reacted the moment the Spiritual Vein finished forming.

Alicia focused harder.

The deeper layers of her planet were still difficult for her to observe clearly. She could sense them, yes—but not with perfect detail. It was a little like trying to see through several walls while half-asleep.

Very inconvenient.

And frankly, rude.

Still, Alicia did not give up.

She slowly pushed her awareness downward, carefully filtering out the normal energy currents of the forest, the roots of ancient trees, the moisture in the soil, and the newly stabilized pulse of the minor Spiritual Vein.

At first, all she felt was earth.

Stone.

Root systems.

And natural underground pressure.

Then—

there it was again.

A faint, quiet vibration.

Weak.

Old.

But undeniably different from everything around it.

Alicia immediately locked onto it.

"…Found you."

Her focus narrowed further.

The sensation was coming from much deeper than she expected.

Not near the surface.

Not even near the active root layers of the forest.

It was buried below them.

Hidden in a denser layer of stone and compacted earth, where ordinary life energy barely reached.

Which raised a very obvious question.

"…Why is there something weird under my forest?"

Alicia did not like unanswered questions.

Especially when they appeared directly underneath her newly created Spiritual Vein.

Because that was either:

very lucky

very suspicious

And with her life lately, Alicia felt the second option had become uncomfortably common.

She considered using brute force to investigate.

Then immediately rejected the idea.

No.

That would be stupid.

If she disturbed the Deep Forest too much, she might destabilize the new Spiritual Vein or damage the balance she had just spent effort creating.

And Alicia had no interest in accidentally ruining her own work five minutes after finishing it.

That would be embarrassing.

So instead, she chose patience.

She slowly adjusted her awareness, using the Spiritual Vein itself as a kind of guide.

If the vein represented a concentrated natural flow of energy, then perhaps she could follow how that energy reacted around the buried anomaly.

It took time.

A lot of time.

But eventually, Alicia began to understand the shape of it.

Whatever was hidden beneath the forest…

was not alive.

At least, not in the ordinary sense.

It had no moving thoughts.

No beast-like instincts.

No life pulse.

And yet—

it still held a strange kind of dormant presence.

Alicia paused.

Then slowly thought:

"…An object?"

That seemed to be the most likely answer.

Something old.

Something buried.

Something that had remained completely inactive until the Spiritual Vein brought enough concentrated energy into the area to stimulate it.

That possibility immediately made Alicia more interested.

Because if it was some kind of naturally formed spiritual object—

then it might be very valuable.

And if it was something stranger than that…

well.

That would depend entirely on whether it was useful or trying to ruin her life.

Alicia sincerely hoped for the first option.

She focused again, carefully probing the buried object with the gentlest touch of planetary perception she could manage.

The moment she did—

a tiny flicker of information surfaced.

Not a full system notification.

Not a proper identification.

Just a faint intuitive response, as if the object itself had weakly acknowledged the contact.

Alicia went still.

Then a partial blue prompt appeared.

Ding!

[Unknown Buried Object Detected]

Condition: Dormant

Compatibility with surrounding Spiritual Vein: Low resonance detected

Further nourishment may reveal more information.

Alicia stared at the screen.

Then reread it.

Then thought:

"…That is somehow both helpful and completely unhelpful."

So basically, the system had confirmed:

yes, there was definitely an object

yes, it was dormant

and no, she still did not actually know what it was

Wonderful.

Still, one part caught her attention immediately:

Low resonance detected

That meant the object had responded to the Spiritual Vein—but only weakly.

Which likely meant one of two things:

the Deep Forest Spiritual Vein was not strong enough yet

or the object required a different kind of energy to awaken fully

Alicia considered this carefully.

Then another thought came to her.

What if this wasn't random?

What if hidden things like this existed naturally within developing planets?

Or perhaps—

what if the advancement to Primitive Planet had unlocked her ability to finally notice things that had already been there all along?

That possibility made Alicia pause for a while.

Because if that was true…

then her world might hold more secrets beneath its surface than she realized.

And that thought was both exciting and slightly concerning.

Mostly exciting.

Slightly concerning.

Alicia focused on the object again.

It was small.

Not large enough to be some giant underground structure or buried ruin.

In fact, based on the shape she could vaguely sense, it seemed closer to a stone or crystal-like object embedded in the deeper earth.

Its energy signature was strange.

Not hostile.

Not aggressive.

But ancient in a way she found difficult to describe.

As if it had been sleeping for a very, very long time.

Then, after another careful moment of observation, Alicia realized something else.

The object was not just reacting to the Spiritual Vein.

It was also slowly absorbing a tiny portion of the surrounding energy.

Not enough to damage the vein.

Not enough to destabilize anything.

But enough to prove that it was changing.

Very slowly.

Alicia narrowed her awareness.

"…So you're charging."

That was important.

Because it meant the object was not dead.

It was waiting.

And if it continued drawing energy over time, then eventually—

it might awaken.

Naturally, Alicia's first thought was:

Should I be worried?

Her second thought was:

This is interesting.

And unfortunately, the second thought was slightly stronger.

Alicia had begun to accept that curiosity was probably one of her more dangerous personality traits.

Still, she was not reckless enough to simply leave the matter completely unattended.

So she made a decision.

She would not force the object awake.

Not yet.

That would be foolish.

But she would monitor it.

Closely.

And if nourishing the Deep Forest Spiritual Vein naturally caused the object to reveal itself over time—

then she could learn more without risking unnecessary damage.

That was the smarter option.

Alicia felt quietly satisfied with that conclusion.

Then, because she was now curious whether the object might have any immediate influence on the forest itself, she shifted her focus back to the surface.

The Deep Forest remained calm.

The newly formed Spiritual Vein was functioning smoothly.

The trees were healthy.

The plant life had subtly improved.

And the beasts had become slightly more active in the area.

Everything seemed normal.

Mostly.

Then her awareness landed on one particular creature.

Of course it did.

The silver fox was still there.

Still sitting near the center of the newly formed Spiritual Vein.

Still looking unreasonably composed.

Alicia stared at it for several seconds.

Then slowly thought:

"…You absolutely felt that too, didn't you?"

The fox opened one eye.

Looked around the forest.

Then casually stood up and began walking toward a slightly different patch of land nearby.

Alicia followed its movement.

Then paused.

Because the fox had just stopped directly above the buried object's approximate location.

Alicia went completely silent.

The fox sat down.

Then lightly tapped the ground once with its paw.

And just like that—

a faint pulse of energy moved through the soil beneath it.

Alicia froze.

The buried object responded.

Only slightly.

But unmistakably.

For one brief moment, Alicia felt the dormant thing below emit another weak resonance.

Then it went still again.

The fox looked at the ground for a few more seconds.

Then, with the absolute shamelessness of a creature that had no business being this suspicious, it simply curled up and lay down right on top of the spot.

Alicia was speechless.

Actually speechless.

Then finally:

"…No."

"…No, absolutely not."

She refused to accept this.

There was no way this random silver fox was allowed to keep being mysteriously relevant.

That was ridiculous.

And yet—

here they were.

Alicia narrowed her awareness at the creature.

"…You are becoming a problem."

The fox, naturally, ignored her completely.

At this point, Alicia was starting to feel personally attacked.

Still…

as ridiculous as it was, this gave her a useful clue.

The beast was clearly more spiritually sensitive than most of the others.

And if it could sense the buried object instinctively, then perhaps the object itself had some connection to spiritual beasts—or at least to energy-sensitive lifeforms.

That was worth remembering.

Very worth remembering.

Alicia looked over the rest of the Deep Forest one more time.

The Spiritual Vein was stable.

The object was dormant but charging.

And the suspicious fox had decided to become even more suspicious than before.

In other words:

everything was progressing exactly as inconveniently as usual.

Alicia almost felt comforted by the consistency.

Almost.

Still, the discovery had changed something important.

Until now, she had mostly viewed her world as a place she was actively building.

A place growing under her guidance.

But now?

Now she was beginning to realize something deeper.

Her world was not just something she was creating.

It was also something she was uncovering.

A place with hidden possibilities.

Hidden reactions.

Hidden mysteries buried beneath its surface.

That thought stayed with her for a long while.

Then Alicia slowly turned her attention toward the future.

If the Deep Forest held one hidden dormant object…

then what else might exist beneath:

the mountains

the rivers

the plains

the ocean floor

The possibilities were suddenly much wider than before.

And if she was going to survive in the universe beyond her world—

then understanding her own planet more deeply might become just as important as making it stronger.

Alicia quietly observed the sleeping forest.

Then the curled-up fox.

Then the hidden object buried beneath it.

And finally thought:

"…Alright."

"I'll let you stay mysterious for now."

"But only because I'm busy."

The forest wind moved softly through the trees.

The Spiritual Vein continued its slow circulation.

And beneath the earth—

the dormant object quietly absorbed another thread of energy.

Waiting.

Sleeping.

Changing.
