Chapter 69 - 69

Chapter 8: The Great Severing

The night the world went dark didn't start with a storm; it started with a whisper in the roots. Professor Leo Heart stood in the Sub-Cortex of the World-Tree, a cathedral of glowing amber sap and pulsing white fibers. He was surrounded by the Apostles of the Resonance—Samuel, Lira, and Kahn. They looked at the massive obsidian conduits that the New Alliance had fused into the tree's trunk—the "Grid" that powered every Mag-Lev train, every hospital, and every automated extraction drone in the Fused World.

"If we do this, Leo," Lira whispered, her silver hair shimmering with a nervous blue light, "we aren't just stopping the ATC. We're stopping the heart of civilization. There will be riots. People will freeze in the high-altitude sectors."

"The people are already freezing, Lira," Leo replied, his Gold-Silver eyes fixed on a conduit that was leaking a sickly black residue—the "Eater-Virus" byproduct of forced extraction. "They just don't feel it yet because their heaters are on. But the soul of the world is being drained into a battery. If I don't sever this connection, the World-Tree will wither in five years."

Leo placed his hands on the bark. Through the Sovereign's Link, he felt the collective pain of every "Battery Pet" in the corporate hangars. He felt the hunger of the soil being stripped of its minerals.

"Kael, Void-Erosion: Absolute Zero," Leo commanded.

The Void-Dragon Prince coiled around Leo's arm and lunged at the obsidian conduits. Unlike a physical strike, Kael's power dissolved the "Contract" between the tree and the tech. The mana-flow didn't just stop; it recoiled.

Across the planet, the "Diamond Age" came to a grinding halt. In New Aethelgard, the soaring skyscrapers flickered and died. The holographic advertisements for "Synthetic Souls" vanished. The Mag-Lev trains screeched to a halt in their magnetic tubes. In the industrial hangars of the ATC, the extraction drills lost power, their diamond tips glowing red before cooling into silence.

"The Grid is down," Samuel reported, checking his tactical HUD. "But the Alliance is already responding. They're pivoting to the 'Emergency Reserves'—the mana-vats we found in Neo-Casablanca. They're prepared for a blackout, Leo."

"I'm not just cutting the power, Sam," Leo said, his voice echoing with the Fifth Fragment's depth. "I'm sending a pulse. A 'Waking Call'."

Leo funneled the Memory Mirror's archives into the severed lines. Every screen that still had a spark of backup power suddenly displayed the same image: the Shadow-Stalker Panther in the ATC vat, its eyes grey and lobotomized. Below it, the names of every Alliance Minister who had taken a bribe appeared in a scrolling list of fire.

"The world wants to know why the lights are out?" Leo asked the empty air. "I'm showing them the cost of the bulb."

By morning, the Fused World was in a state of "Static War." The corporations were paralyzed, but the Alliance High Minister, Aris Thorne, had issued a global warrant. The Heart Guild was declared a "Terrorist Insurgency," and the order was given to seize the Heart Ranch by any means necessary.
