Chapter 6: The Shadow-Stalker's End
The air in the grotto turned ice-cold. The Shadow-Stalker, a feline monstrosity made of living smoke and obsidian claws, drifted down from the canopy like a nightmare made flesh. This was a Gold-tier beast—the kind that required a squad of professional Explorers to take down.
"Leo, move!" Jud screamed, but his legs were frozen in terror.
"Go, Jud! That's an order!" Leo barked, not taking his eyes off the predator.
Jud, realizing he would only be a liability, grabbed his Stone-Toad and bolted toward the portal exit. The Shadow-Stalker didn't even look at him; its yellow eyes were locked on Leo—or more specifically, on the pulsing Obsidian Heart-Core in Leo's hand and the shimmering snail at his feet.

"You want the core?" Leo gritted his teeth, his hand trembling. "Come and get it."
The Shadow-Stalker blurred. It moved with Shadow-Step, but a version far more advanced than the one Leo had mimicked. It appeared directly behind Leo, its claws raised to shred his spine.
"Grim! Overdrive!"
[DING!] [Overdrive Mode: Activated.] [Warning: Host's Mana will be drained to 1%. Grim's shell integrity will drop by 50% post-activation.]
A violent surge of energy ripped out of Leo's chest, funneled through the contract bond, and slammed into Grim. The snail's shell didn't just glow; it turned white-hot. The violet runes expanded, detaching from the shell and floating in the air like a protective cage.
CLANG!
The Shadow-Stalker's claws hit the runic barrier and sparks flew like a grinder against steel. The beast recoiled, letting out a confused hiss. It wasn't used to prey that bit back.
"Grim... Vacuum Collapse!"
This wasn't a skill in the Academy books. This was a hidden ability unlocked by the Pet Encyclopedia for the Devourer lineage.
Grim opened his small mouth, and instead of a hiss, he produced a gravitational pull. The surrounding air, the pebbles, and even the shadows of the trees were sucked toward the snail. The Shadow-Stalker, caught mid-leap, found itself dragged toward the one thing it couldn't phase through: a concentrated singularity of lightning and earth.
"Now! Release!" Leo shouted, his vision blurring from mana exhaustion.
The absorbed energy—the Golem's core, the Shadow-Stalker's own kinetic force, and Leo's mana—was expelled in a single, blinding pillar of violet light.
BOOM!
The explosion leveled the surrounding fungal trees. When the dust settled, a massive trench had been carved into the grotto floor. The Shadow-Stalker lay at the end of it, its smoky body dissipating into nothingness, leaving behind a single, glowing Shadow-Essence.
Leo collapsed to one knee, gasping for air. Grim crawled toward him, his shell cracked and dull, looking exhausted.

Leo pocketed the Shadow-Essence with a shaking hand and recalled Grim into his soul-space to rest. He limped toward the portal, slipping through just as the sun began to peek over the horizon of the Academy walls.
Jud was waiting near the equipment shed, pacing frantically. When he saw Leo, he nearly tackled him. "You're alive! I thought... I heard an explosion that sounded like the end of the world!"
"I'm fine," Leo wheezed, leaning on Jud. "But we need to get back to the dorms before—"
"Before what, Mr. Heart?"
Leo froze. Standing in the shadow of the shed was Master Thorne. The instructor held a digital tablet, his face unreadable.
"Do you have any idea," Thorne said, stepping into the light, "how many rules you broke tonight? Trespassing, entering a Forbidden Sector, and engaging a Gold-tier entity without a license."
Jud turned pale. "Sir, it was my fault, I—"
"Quiet, Gus," Thorne interrupted. He walked up to Leo, his eyes scanning the boy's exhausted state. Then, he looked at the ground where Leo's boots were stained with the unique violet dust of the Whispering Grotto.
Thorne leaned in, his voice a low whisper. "That explosion... that wasn't the work of a Sludge-Snail. I don't know what you're raising, Leo Heart, but the Headmaster is already asking questions. If you want to keep that beast, you'd better win the Family Tournament convincingly. Because if you don't, the Research Bureau will come to 'confiscate' it for study."
Thorne straightened up and turned away. "Get to your dorms. I'll clear your sensor logs this time. Don't make me regret it."
Back in his room, Leo locked the door and slumped onto his bed. He looked at the Shadow-Essence and the Obsidian Heart-Core on his nightstand.
His Eye of Truth flickered one last time before he drifted into a deep sleep:
New Evolution Path Unlocked: > Target: Grim. Next Form: Void-Storm Colossus (Silver-Rank Evolution). Requirement: Win the Heart Family Tournament and absorb the "Ancestor's Spark."
Leo smiled. The "trash" snail was officially a giant-killer. Now, he just had to survive his own family.
