Chapter 34 - Chapter 34 — Control the King

Night settled over the city. The world outside was calm. Peaceful. Normal. But inside Kai's apartment—something wasn't right.

Kai stood in the center of his room. Lights off. Curtains drawn. Only darkness. He looked down at his shadow. It wasn't still. It hadn't been still since the dungeon. It moved. Subtly. Like something breathing beneath the surface.

"…You're different," Kai muttered. The Desert King wasn't like his other shadows. It didn't feel like a soldier. It felt like… a presence.

Kai exhaled slowly. "…Let's try again." He raised his hand. Shadow spread across the floor. Darker. Thicker. He focused. Pulled. Commanded. "Rise."

At first—nothing. Then— the shadow reacted. Violently. It surged upward like a wave. The room temperature dropped instantly. The walls trembled. A massive shape began to form. Larger than before. Clearer. The outline of the Desert King. Its crown. Its massive frame. Its presence—oppressive.

Kai's breathing changed. Heavy. Unsteady. "…Too much…" The shadow wasn't obeying cleanly. It was resisting. Fighting back. Like it didn't want to kneel. The Desert King's form flickered. Then—its eyes opened. Golden. Burning. Alive.

Kai froze. "…That's not supposed to happen." The shadow moved on its own. A step forward. The floor cracked beneath it. Pressure filled the room. Kai's instincts screamed. Danger. Not from an enemy— from his own power.

"Stop."

No response. The Desert King raised its arm slowly. Not attacking. Not yet. But the intent—unclear. Unstable. Kai clenched his teeth. "…Obey me." The shadow pulsed. But didn't submit. Instead— the pressure increased. His vision blurred. His body trembled. He was losing control.

System Intervention

Warning: [High-Rank Shadow Unstable]

Control Required.

Kai's mind raced. "…Control… not force…" He exhaled. Slowed his breathing. Stopped pushing. Instead—he focused inward. On the connection. On the abyss.

The shadow wasn't just power. It was linked to him. His will. His state. His control. If he forced it— it resisted. If he stabilized— it responded. Kai lowered his hand slightly. "…Not command." "…Control."

The pressure changed. Not gone. But reduced. The Desert King's movement slowed. Its glowing eyes dimmed slightly. Kai stepped forward. Carefully. "…You're mine." Not dominance. Not aggression. Certainty. The shadow flickered—then—stopped.

The Desert King froze in place. Its form stabilized for a brief moment. Then—collapsed. Returning to shadow. Silence filled the room. Kai staggered back. Breathing heavily. Sweat dripping. "…That's… not ready." Not even close.

Kai sat down slowly. His body exhausted again. "That thing…" "…is on another level." The other shadows followed orders. The Desert King—needed control. Training. Growth.

The system flickered. Recommendation: [Shadow Stabilization Required]

Kai smirked faintly. "…Yeah." "I figured."

Elsewhere—

Aria stood on a rooftop. Looking toward the city. Her expression thoughtful. Quiet. "…That wasn't normal." The fight. The power. Kai. Everything about him didn't fit. Didn't match any hunter she had seen. She crossed her arms. "…What are you hiding?"

Back in the apartment—Kai lay on his bed. Staring at the ceiling. His shadow stretched beneath him. Silent again. But deeper now. Heavier. Inside it— the Desert King waited. Not gone. Not controlled. Just… waiting.
