The debriefing room was a vacuum of sound, lined with lead and mana-dampening alloy. Director Han sat at the head of a long obsidian table, his glasses reflecting the holographic data scrolling in front of him. Beside him stood a man Kai hadn't seen before—General Iron-Side, a scarred veteran with a prosthetic arm made of high-grade mana-conduits.
"The Sentinel is gone," Han said, his voice flat. He didn't look up from his screen. "A billion-won piece of ancient technology, evaporated."
"Malfunction," Aria repeated, her voice bored as she leaned against the back wall. She played the part of the arrogant B-Rank perfectly. "The mana storm spiked the city's core. It turned the Guardian into a very expensive pile of slag."
General Iron-Side turned his gaze to Kai. The pressure was physical—the weight of an A-Rank's focused intent. "And the scout? He looks remarkably clean for someone who just walked through a Class-4 collapse."
Kai didn't flinch. He let the Void Veil do its work, projecting the image of a lucky, slightly exhausted C-Rank. "I stayed behind Aria's shield, General. I'm good at hiding. It's why I'm still alive."
The General held Kai's gaze for a long ten seconds. "Hiding is a coward's skill. But in the A-Rank Selection Tournament, there are no shadows big enough to crawl into."
Han finally looked up, his eyes sharp behind his frames. "Which is exactly why Kai is entering. As my personal 'Wildcard' candidate."
Aria stiffened. Kai simply narrowed his eyes.
"The Tournament?" Kai asked. "I'm registered as a C-Rank. The minimum entry is B."
"Official records can be... flexible," Han said, sliding a tablet across the table.
On the screen was a bracket of names. Most were the sons and daughters of major Guild leaders—prodigies with polished armor and public relations teams. At the very bottom, in small, unassuming text, was: Kai Draven (Independent).
"You have three weeks," Han continued. "The tournament is a simulated dungeon crawl in the 'Hollow Sphere.' If you win, you get the A-Rank license and a seat at the High Council. If you lose... well, I suspect the Abyss won't let you just 'lose' gracefully."
The Training Grounds
An hour later, Kai and Aria stood in a private training gym in the sub-basements. The room was empty, the walls reinforced with Grade-A kinetic dampeners.
"You're going to get caught," Aria said, her voice a low hiss. "The tournament uses 'Soul Scanners.' They don't just look at your mana; they look at the weight of your spirit. If you bring Bane or Skitter out in that arena, the scanners will scream 'Anomaly' before the first blow lands."
Kai walked to the center of the mat. He closed his eyes, feeling the Abyss Core pulsing in his chest. It felt like a dark sun, radiating a heat that didn't burn his skin, but his soul.
"Then I won't bring them out," Kai said.
"Then how do you plan on beating A-Rank legacies?"
Kai turned his hand palm-up. Black smoke didn't rise from it this time. Instead, the air around his hand seemed to warp, as if space itself was being pinched.
"I'm not going to use my shadows," Kai whispered. "I'm going to use Shadow Integration (Stage 2). I won't call the army. I'll be the army."
He exhaled, and the shadows in the corners of the gym didn't just move—they rushed toward him. They didn't form a suit of armor this time. They sank into his skin. His veins turned a bruised violet, and his hair stood on end as a cold, crushing pressure filled the room.

Kai moved.
To Aria, he didn't just run; he vanished. There was no sound, no displaced air. One second he was ten meters away; the next, his fist was hovering a millimeter from her nose. The force of the stop created a sonic pop that ruffled her hair.
"My Strength, my Agility... it's all combined now," Kai said, his voice echoing with that haunting double-tone. "In the arena, they'll just see a very fast, very strong 'Combat Specialist.' They won't see the Abyss. They'll just see the result."
Aria stared at the violet veins receding into his skin. She felt a cold sweat break out on her neck. "You're a monster, Kai. You know that, right?"
Kai looked at the digital clock on the wall. Three weeks.
"In this world, Aria," Kai said, walking toward the exit, "the only thing worse than being a monster is being the one the monster eats."
