Chapter 91 - Chapter 91: The Voice Beyond

The chamber fell silent.

Not because the light had faded.

But because every soul present had heard the same voice.

At last...

It had not come from the fracture.

It had not come from Elyan.

It had come from somewhere beyond both worlds.

The healing bridge flickered.

For the first time since it had awakened, its light became unstable.

Elyan's expression darkened.

His calm was gone.

Adrian noticed immediately.

"You know that voice.

Elyan didn't answer at once.

His silver-black form stared into the slowly closing fracture as though he were looking across an impossible distance.

Finally, he whispered,

"...I hoped I would never hear it again."

The Warden stepped forward.

"Identify it."

Elyan lowered his head.

"I cannot."

Lyra frowned.

"You recognized it."

"I recognized the feeling."

A cold silence spread through the chamber.

Adrian suddenly felt it too.

The mark on his wrist, which had been warm only moments ago, turned cold.

Not painful.

Warning.

The bridge trembled.

Its beautiful silver light dimmed.

Tiny ripples spread across its surface.

Like something unseen had touched it from the other side.

The Warden's voice became firm.

"The fracture is no longer the only opening."

Adrian looked up.

"What does that mean?"

The ancient guardian slowly turned toward him.

"When the bridge awakened..."

A pause.

"...it became visible."

"Visible to who?"

Nobody answered.

Because they didn't know.

---

Far beyond the bridge...

Beyond Elyan's homeland.

Beyond the place where the fracture had first appeared.

Something opened its eyes.

Not physical eyes.

Awareness.

Patient.

Ancient.

Watching.

A single thought drifted across an endless sea of silence.

The bridge lives again.

Then—

Another thought.

The Bearer has awakened.

Darkness shifted.

Countless distant lights responded.

Like stars moving together.

Waiting.

---

Back in the chamber, Adrian suddenly staggered.

The mark flared violently.

A sharp pulse shot through his arm.

He grabbed his wrist.

"What—"

The pain vanished as quickly as it had come.

Elyan immediately moved closer.

"What did you see?"

Adrian blinked.

"I..."

He struggled to explain.

"It wasn't a vision."

His breathing slowed.

"It felt like..."

He hesitated.

"...something noticed me."

The chamber became deathly still.

The Warden closed its eyes.

"So it begins."

Lyra looked sharply toward the guardian.

"You expected this?"

"No."

A pause.

"I feared it."

Adrian rubbed his wrist again.

"What exactly are we talking about?"

Elyan remained silent.

Too silent.

Finally, Adrian looked directly at him.

"Elyan."

The being of silver-black light met his eyes.

"Tell me."

Elyan's voice carried centuries of regret.

"When I crossed into your world..."

He paused.

"...I wasn't alone."

Silence.

Adrian felt his heartbeat quicken.

"You said you came seeking help."

"I did."

Another pause.

"But others knew where I had gone."

The bridge flickered again.

The silver light dimmed for only a second.

It was enough.

The Warden looked upward.

"They have found the path."

Lyra stepped back.

"No..."

She whispered.

"We just restored it."

The guardian answered quietly.

"And now they can see it."

Adrian looked between them.

"I think everyone is leaving out the important part."

He pointed toward the fracture.

"Who are 'they'?"

Elyan's expression hardened.

"The Endless."

The name carried weight.

Not magical.

Historical.

Ancient.

Adrian frowned.

"I've never heard of them."

"You were never supposed to."

Elyan looked toward the slowly healing bridge.

"They are not conquerors."

"They are not kings."

"They are not gods."

A pause.

"They are survivors."

That answer somehow made Adrian even more uneasy.

"Survivors of what?"

Elyan's eyes filled with sorrow.

"Our world."

Silence.

The bridge hummed softly.

Its light reflected across the chamber.

Elyan continued.

"My people believed understanding would save every world."

A faint smile.

"They were wrong."

The smile disappeared.

"Some worlds cannot be saved."

Lyra stepped closer.

"And yours?"

Elyan closed his eyes.

"It was consumed."

Nobody spoke.

Consumed.

Not conquered.

Not destroyed.

Consumed.

By what?

Adrian finally asked.

"The Endless?"

Elyan nodded once.

"They were like us."

A pause.

"Once."

The chamber grew colder.

Adrian realized what that meant before anyone said it.

"They changed."

"Yes."

"Into what?"

Elyan looked directly at him.

"Into beings who believed the only way to survive forever..."

His voice became almost a whisper.

"...was to become part of everything."

The meaning settled slowly.

Like poison.

"They don't invade worlds."

"They absorb them."

Silence.

The bridge pulsed again.

A deep tone echoed throughout the chamber.

The Warden immediately looked toward the ceiling.

"They're here."

Adrian's eyes widened.

"Already?"

"No."

The guardian corrected.

"Watching."

Far above them...

The Sanctuary shook.

Kai caught himself against a crumbling pillar.

"What was that?"

Veyr slowly looked toward the sky.

Clouds were moving.

Not naturally.

The stars above the ruined city began disappearing.

One after another.

As though something impossibly vast was passing between the world...

And the heavens.

Kai stared upward.

"...Tell me I'm imagining that."

Veyr remained silent.

For the first time since Adrian had met him...

The old mentor looked afraid.

Deep beneath them...

The bridge pulsed once more.

Elyan looked toward Adrian.

His expression filled with determination.

"They came for me once."

A pause.

"Now..."

He looked at the glowing mark.

"They've come for us."

The chamber trembled.

Not from collapse.

From arrival.

And somewhere beyond the stars...

Something smiled.
