Chapter 59 - Chapter 59: Return pressure

Adrian hit the ground hard.

Stone.

Real.

Cold.

Air rushed back into his lungs like he'd been underwater too long.

For a second, he just lay there—staring up, trying to separate what was real from what he had just gone through.

Then—

Adrian!

Kai's voice.

Close.

Too close.

Adrian pushed himself up.

The chamber swam into focus.

Cracked walls.

Faint light.

The transit seal beneath him—dim now, almost dead.

Kai was kneeling beside him, gripping his shoulder.

You're back.

Adrian blinked once. Yeah.

Kai searched his face. "You're actually back."

"…Still me. I think."

Kai let out a breath that sounded like he'd been holding it the entire time.

Behind him, Veyr stood still.

Watching.

Not relieved.

Not yet.

You returned faster than expected," Veyr said.

Adrian glanced at him. How long was I gone?"

Kai answered immediately. Seconds.

That didn't match.

At all.

Adrian frowned. "…Felt longer."

Veyr nodded. "It always does."

That wasn't comforting.

Adrian pushed himself fully to his feet.

His body felt… different.

Not stronger.

Not weaker.

Just… clearer.

Like something had been sharpened.

Kai noticed.

"…What happened in there?"

Adrian flexed his hand slowly.

The mark pulsed.

Calm.

Responsive.

Under control.

I got judged."

Kai blinked. You're saying that way too casually.

Adrian shrugged. "Didn't feel optional.

Veyr stepped closer now.

And?"

Adrian met his gaze.

A small pause.

I wasn't rejected.

Silence.

Heavy.

Kai looked between them. Is that good?"

Veyr didn't answer immediately.

It means you still exist.

Kai frowned. That sounds like a low bar.

It is, Adrian muttered.

Then his expression shifted slightly.

But it also means something else.

Veyr's eyes narrowed. What?"

Adrian looked at his wrist again.

They're letting it continue.

A pause.

Whatever this bond is becoming.

That didn't sit well.

Not with any of them.

The chamber trembled.

All three froze.

Kai turned sharply. That again?"

Another tremor hit.

Stronger.

The cracks along the wall deepened.

Darkness leaked through them like ink under pressure.

Veyr's voice dropped instantly. "…It's still here.

Adrian's jaw tightened. The Keeper."

The shadows gathered again.

Faster than before.

More aggressive.

Like something that had lost patience.

Kai stepped forward, power rising. "…We just got you back."

Adrian moved beside him.

Then we don't lose me again."

The crack in the wall split wider—

And this time—

The Keeper didn't emerge slowly.

It forced its way through.

The chamber bent under its presence.

Stone warped.

Air distorted.

Reality strained.

It stood fully formed now.

Clearer than before.

Taller.

Sharper.

More defined.

And focused entirely on Adrian.

The mark burned—

But didn't pull him.

Adrian held his ground.m

You're persistent," he muttered.

The Keeper tilted its head.

That same unnatural motion.

Studying.

Adjusting

Then—

It moved.

Not a lunge.

Not a strike.

A step.

And the space between them collapsed.

Kai reacted instantly—

Power slammed forward—

But the Keeper passed through it.

Unaffected.

Veyr's voice cut through. Don't engage directly!"

Adrian's eyes sharpened.

Yeah. I noticed.

The Keeper lifted its hand.

The shadows around Adrian twisted—

Not pulling him.

Not grabbing.

Locking onto him.

Recognition had turned into certainty.

Kai swore. t's targeting you completely now."

Adrian exhaled slowly.

Good.

Both of them looked at him.

Because now I know how it works.

The Keeper moved again.

Faster.

Closing distance.

Adrian raised his hand

The mark flared—

The connection stirred

But this time—

He didn't open it.

Didn't respond.

Didn't feed it.

The pull surged

The Keeper paused.

Just for a fraction of a second.

That was enough.

Adrian shifted sideways—

The Keeper's reach missed him by inches.

Kai's eyes widened. You baited it.

Adrian didn't look back.

It reacts to expectation.

Veyr stepped in. Then keep breaking it.

The Keeper adjusted instantly.

Again

Faster now

Adrian changed his timing.

Opened the connection—

Cut it

Stepped back—

Held still—

Then moved.

No pattern.

No rhythm.

Unpredictable.

The Keeper followed—

But not cleanly.

Not perfectly.

It hesitated.

Micro-delays.

Small errors

Enough to matter.

Kai joined in now

Not attacking

Interfering.

Disrupting space.

Forcing more adjustments.

Veyr moved last—

Precise.

Targeting the moments between reactions.

For the first time

They weren't just surviving it.

They were controlling the pace.

Adrian felt it.

The shift.

The difference.

It's not ahead anymore," he said.

The Keeper stopped.

Completely.

That alone was wrong.

Too still.

Too aware.

Then—

The mark pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Hard.

Adrian's expression changed.

No.

Veyr saw it instantly. What is it?"

Adrian's voice dropped.

It's not trying to predict me anymore."

A pause.

It's waiting.

Silence.

Kai frowned. Waiting for what?"

Adrian looked up at the Keeper.

At the thing that had been hunting him.

Watching him.

Learning him.

And now—

Not moving

Not reacting.

Just… observing.

Adrian's stomach tightened.

For me to make the first move.

The balance shifted again.

And this time—

The next step would decide everything.
