The city was quiet that night, almost unnaturally so.
Adrian sat on the rooftop of his apartment building, legs dangling over the edge, his hands trembling slightly. His chest still ached from the surge of shadows he had unleashed earlier. The energy had felt alive—hungry, untamed, and… frighteningly powerful.
Kai stood a few feet behind him, arms crossed, his expression unreadable as he watched the glowing lights of the city below.
"You're exhausted," Kai said finally, breaking the silence.
Adrian let out a shaky laugh. "Exhausted? That's one way to put it. I nearly… I don't even know what I nearly did. Those shadows—they weren't mine anymore."
Kai's piercing blue eyes softened just slightly. "That's the point. They are part of you, Adrian. And right now… you don't fully understand them. But you will. I'll help you."
Adrian swallowed hard. "And what about that… thing? The one in the warehouse? The one that called me a 'core'?"
Kai's expression darkened. He walked closer, crouching beside him on the ledge. "That was no ordinary Wraith. That was a Harbinger. One of the elite shadows that serve the Void."
Adrian frowned. "The Void?"
Kai exhaled, as if preparing himself to reveal something Adrian might not want to hear. "There's a reason shadow creatures hunt humans like you. Those who can control shadows… or who awaken them… are considered dangerous. They are potential vessels for something much greater—a power that the Void wants."
Adrian's stomach dropped. "Vessels… for what?"
Kai's gaze drifted to the dark horizon. "For destruction. Or control. Whoever the Void chooses, they can wield unimaginable shadow power. That Harbinger recognized something in you—something unique."
Adrian shivered. "Unique… how?"
Kai's hand brushed lightly over Adrian's, a fleeting touch that made his heart skip. "You don't just control shadows. You resonate with them. You awaken their consciousness, even partially. That is… extremely rare."
Adrian swallowed. His hands shook as he turned them over, staring at the faint shimmer of shadow magic still lingering in his palm. "So… what does that mean for me?"
Kai's eyes locked onto his. "It means two things. One: the Wraiths and Harbingers will never stop hunting you. Two: if you want to survive… you'll need to train. Hard. And fast."
Adrian's chest tightened. Fear mingled with excitement in a way he hadn't experienced before. He looked down at Kai, who seemed impossibly calm, like a storm waiting to be unleashed. And despite the danger, Adrian felt a strange pull toward him—a mixture of trust and something more he couldn't quite name.
"…And you're… going to train me?" Adrian asked quietly.
Kai's lips curved in the faintest of smirks. "Yes. And don't misunderstand. This isn't just about learning to fight. It's about mastering the connection between your shadows and your soul."
Adrian felt his pulse quicken. "Connection… you mean like… emotion?"
Kai leaned closer, so close that Adrian could feel his warm breath against his ear. "Exactly. Shadows respond to your feelings. Anger, fear, trust… even love. But be warned—the stronger the emotion, the more unpredictable the power."
Adrian froze. The word love hung between them, unspoken but undeniable. His throat tightened, and he quickly looked away, focusing on the city lights instead of Kai's intense gaze.
Kai chuckled softly, almost like a warning. "Ignore it if you want. But the shadows never lie."
A sudden movement caught Adrian's attention. Across the rooftop, a figure emerged from the shadows. Its form was tall, elegant, and malevolent. Crimson eyes glowed in the dim light.
"Not him again," Adrian whispered.
Kai's expression hardened. "It seems the Harbinger didn't report its findings accurately. He's come personally."
The creature stepped closer, its presence pressing down on Adrian like a physical weight. Shadows twisted around its body, forming sharp, menacing tendrils that moved independently.
Adrian's stomach dropped. "What… does it want?"
Kai stepped in front of him, placing a hand on Adrian's shoulder. "You."
Adrian's heart skipped. "Me?!"
Kai nodded, eyes locked on the Harbinger. "And it won't leave until it gets you. Which means…" His voice dropped to a whisper. "…we fight."
Adrian felt a surge of adrenaline, fear, and something else—something he couldn't ignore. The closeness of Kai, the way his hand lingered on his shoulder, the way his presence made the shadows around them respond… it was intoxicating.
The Harbinger's voice hissed like smoke. "…You belong to the Void…"
Adrian swallowed hard. "No… I belong to myself."
Kai's eyes softened for a fleeting moment, then hardened again. "Good. Hold onto that."
With a flick of his hand, shadows surged forward, forming weapons and shields. The Harbinger grinned, crimson eyes glowing brighter.
And in that moment, Adrian understood one thing clearly:
This was no longer just about survival.
This was the beginning of a war—and he was already in the middle of it.
