Chapter 62 - The Awakening Storm

The school didn't sound like a school anymore.

It sounded like something breaking.

Not just walls.

Not just glass.

People.

Maya stood still for half a second too long—trying to process the overwhelming surge.

It wasn't one emotion.

It was hundreds.

Fear. Confusion. Panic. Anger.

All crashing into her at once.

"…Maya," Ethan said sharply.

She blinked.

Focus.

Right.

"We need to move," he added.

Another shockwave rippled through the building—

This one stronger.

Closer.

A classroom door burst open down the hallway, slamming against the wall as a student stumbled out.

"…I didn't do anything!" he yelled, his voice shaking.

Behind him—

Desks floated.

Not smoothly.

Violently.

Like they were being dragged by invisible strings.

Maya's stomach dropped.

"…another one."

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"…yeah."

He ran a hand through his hair, already thinking.

"…they're not just awakening."

A beat.

"They're losing control."

Chaos Spreads

A girl screamed from upstairs.

Then—

Silence.

Too sudden.

Too unnatural.

Maya's chest tightened.

"…we can't be everywhere."

Ethan glanced at her.

"…we don't need to be."

She frowned.

"…what do you mean?"

His expression sharpened.

"…we find the center."

Another pulse hit—

Stronger.

Wider.

Maya gasped slightly.

"…there's a pattern."

Ethan nodded.

"…yeah."

He pointed down the far corridor.

"…it's coming from that direction."

The deeper part of the school.

Where fewer students usually went.

Where things could go—

Unnoticed.

Maya swallowed.

"…of course it is."

The Observers

Behind them, Subject Three tilted her head slightly.

"…adaptive response detected," she murmured.

Subject Four's gaze followed Maya and Ethan.

"…they're accelerating."

A pause.

"…faster than expected."

Subject Three's lips curved faintly.

"…then we adjust."

Back to the Storm

Ethan grabbed Maya's wrist—

Not tightly.

Just enough.

"…stay close."

She didn't pull away this time.

"…I will."

They ran.

Past broken lockers.

Past students trying to escape.

Past others frozen in fear—

Or worse.

Changing.

A boy stood against the wall, his shadow stretching unnaturally behind him—

Moving.

Even though he wasn't.

Maya's breath caught.

"…Ethan—"

"…don't stop," he said.

Because if they stopped for everyone—

They'd save no one.

The Source

They turned the final corner—

And everything went still.

Too still.

The air felt—

Heavy.

Like walking into deep water.

At the center of the hallway stood a girl.

Quiet.

Head down.

Hands trembling slightly.

Nothing around her was moving.

And somehow—

That was worse.

"…she's not releasing it," Maya whispered.

Ethan's expression darkened.

"…no."

A beat.

"…she's holding everything in."

Cracks spread slowly across the walls—

Not exploding.

Compressing.

Like the entire space was being squeezed.

Maya felt it.

The pressure.

On her chest.

On her thoughts.

On everything.

"…if she doesn't let go—"

Ethan finished it.

"…it all collapses."

Cliffhanger Setup

The girl lifted her head slowly.

Her eyes—

Glowed faintly.

Not wild.

Not panicked.

Just…

Overwhelmed.

"…make it stop," she whispered.

Maya stepped forward instinctively.

But this time—

Ethan didn't follow.

"…Maya."

She looked back.

"…this one's different."

A pause.

"…how?"

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"…she's not scared of the power."

Another crack echoed—

Louder.

Closer.

"…she's scared of what she'll do with it."

Maya turned back to the girl.

Heart pounding.

Because that kind of fear?

Was the most dangerous of all.
