Chapter 60 - The One Who Feels Everything

The shift didn't warn him.

It just—

Happened.

Ethan froze mid-step.

"…wait."

Maya turned instantly.

"…what?"

He didn't answer.

Because suddenly—

The world got louder.

Not outside.

Inside.

Why is everyone staring—

I shouldn't have said that—

Don't cry don't cry don't—

He hates me—

Ethan grabbed his head.

"…nah—this is—"

Too much.

Maya's eyes widened.

"…Ethan."

But he stepped back.

Hard.

Like the ground wasn't stable anymore.

"…I can hear them."

A pause.

"…all of them."

The hallway blurred around him.

Not visually—

Emotionally.

It wasn't just thoughts.

It was feeling.

Fear.

Anxiety.

Jealousy.

Anger.

All crashing into him at once.

Maya rushed forward.

"Ethan—focus on me."

But it wasn't that simple.

Because unlike her—

He didn't see connections.

He became them.

Across the corridor—

Subject Three watched silently.

"…adaptation," she murmured.

But her gaze sharpened.

"…unstable."

Ethan staggered.

"…make it stop."

Maya's chest tightened.

Because she knew—

This wasn't something she could just block.

This was evolution.

"…Ethan, listen to me."

She stepped closer.

Slowly.

Carefully.

"Don't fight it."

He let out a strained laugh.

"…you're joking, right?"

"I'm serious."

She reached out—

Not to touch him—

But to connect.

"I think…"

A breath.

"…this is your role."

That made him pause.

"…what?"

Maya's voice softened.

"You don't just hear them."

A beat.

"You feel them."

Silence.

Then—

Something clicked.

The noise didn't disappear.

But it—

Separated.

Like layers pulling apart.

Not one overwhelming wave anymore.

But individual signals.

Ethan's breathing slowed slightly.

"…okay."

A pause.

"…okay, that's new."

Maya watched closely.

"…what's happening?"

He frowned slightly.

"…I can tell who's who now."

His gaze shifted across the hallway.

"That guy—"

A pause.

"He's scared."

Another direction.

"That one's angry."

Then—

He looked at her.

And froze.

"…and you—"

Maya's heart skipped.

"…what about me?"

A beat.

Ethan's voice dropped.

"…you're holding everything together."

Silence.

Because that wasn't just observation.

That was understanding.

Behind them—

Subject Three stepped forward slightly.

"…empathic synchronization," she said.

Ethan glanced at her.

"…yeah."

A breath.

"Sounds fancy."

"…it's inefficient," she replied.

Maya shook her head.

"…no."

Her voice steadier now.

Stronger.

"It's balance."

Another pulse hit.

And this time—

It didn't hurt.

It aligned.

Maya saw it instantly.

Ethan's presence in the system—

It wasn't chaotic anymore.

It was stabilizing.

Where she guided connections—

He regulated emotion.

Two roles.

One system.

Maya whispered—

"…we're syncing."

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"…yeah."

A beat.

"That doesn't sound safe."

Across from them—

Subject Three's gaze darkened slightly.

"…this was not the intended outcome."

And then—

A new voice.

"…no."

Soft.

Calm.

Too calm.

"…it's better."

They turned.

Subject Four.

Standing casually like he'd been there the whole time.

Watching.

Smiling faintly.

"…you finally see it," he said.

Maya's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…see what?"

He gestured lightly between her and Ethan.

"…the system isn't about control."

A pause.

"…it's about roles."

Silence.

"Connection," he nodded toward Maya.

"Emotion," he nodded toward Ethan.

Then—

His gaze lifted slightly.

"…and something else is still missing."

Maya's chest tightened.

"…what do you mean?"

Subject Four didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

He looked past them.

At the students.

At the growing instability.

At the system—

Still evolving.

"…you think this is the final stage?"

A small shake of his head.

"…this is just phase one."

Ethan groaned softly.

"…yeah."

A beat.

"Of course it is."

Then—

Without warning—

A scream echoed through the school.

Different.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Power.

Maya's head snapped toward the sound.

"…that's not normal."

Subject Four's smile faded slightly.

For the first time—

Serious.

"…no."

A pause.

"…it's not."

Another pulse.

Stronger.

Wild.

And suddenly—

A locker down the hallway—

crushed inward.

Like something invisible had grabbed it.

Students screamed.

Ran.

Chaos exploded.

Maya's heart pounded.

"…someone else is changing."

Ethan stepped forward instinctively.

"…yeah."

A breath.

"And they're not handling it well."

Subject Three's voice cut through the noise.

Cold.

"…this is why control is necessary."

Subject Four shook his head slowly.

"…no."

A pause.

"This is why choice matters."

Maya looked between them.

Then toward the chaos.

Decision made.

"…we help them."

Ethan smirked faintly.

"…yeah."

A beat.

"Let's test these upgrades."

And as the system pulsed again—

Not breaking.

Not collapsing.

But evolving—

Something new entered the game.

Not a Subject.

Not controlled.

But powerful enough to change everything.
