Chapter 55 - The Day Everyone Heard Each Other

It didn't spread quietly anymore.

It erupted.

At first—

People thought it was noise.

A headache.

A passing moment of confusion.

Then—

Voices.

Not spoken.

Not heard with ears.

Felt.

Inside.

A woman walking down the street froze mid-step.

Her eyes widened.

"…who said that?"

No one answered.

But the voice came again—

Clearer this time.

I didn't say anything.

She looked around wildly.

"…then why can I hear you?!"

Across from her—

A man clutched his head.

"I—I can hear you too—!"

Panic spread faster than the connection itself.

Because now—

It wasn't subtle.

It was undeniable.

Back in the hospital—

Maya dropped to her knees.

Her hands gripping her head.

"Ah—!"

Ethan moved instantly.

"…Maya!"

But he felt it too.

Not as strong.

Not as chaotic.

But growing.

Voices.

Thousands.

Then more.

Layered.

Unfiltered.

Fear.

Confusion.

Anger.

Thoughts bleeding into thoughts—

No boundaries.

No control.

"…it's too much," Maya gasped.

Her ability—

Already sensitive—

Was now overloaded.

This wasn't fragments anymore.

This was everyone.

Ethan clenched his teeth.

"…yeah."

A pause.

"This is what happens without limits."

People outside screamed.

Some collapsed.

Others ran—

Even though there was nowhere to run from something inside their own minds.

Maya forced herself to breathe.

Slow.

Controlled.

But the voices kept coming.

Louder.

Closer.

More personal.

Then—

She heard something different.

Not random.

Not chaotic.

Focused.

The man.

"You're feeling it now," his voice said calmly.

"Connection without structure."

Maya's eyes snapped open.

"…stop it," she said through gritted teeth.

A pause.

Then—

"Why?" he asked.

"Is this not what humanity has always wanted?"

Ethan's voice cut in sharply.

"…nah."

A beat.

"This isn't understanding."

Maya forced herself to stand—

Even as the world spun around her.

"…this is invasion."

Silence.

Then—

"Perspective," the man replied.

The hospital walls flickered again—

But this time—

They didn't stabilize.

They overlapped.

Reality—

And system—

Blending.

Maya saw it clearly now.

Threads.

Everywhere.

Connecting people.

Crossing.

Tangling.

Breaking.

Reforming.

"…it's unstable," she whispered.

Ethan nodded.

"…yeah."

A pause.

"And when it breaks—"

They both understood.

At the same time.

It wouldn't just disconnect.

It would collapse.

A sudden surge hit the network.

Hard.

Violent.

Somewhere in the city—

A group of people screamed—

Then went silent all at once.

Maya felt it.

Like a cord snapping.

Dozens of minds—

Gone.

Her breath caught.

"…Ethan."

His expression darkened instantly.

"…yeah."

A pause.

"That's not just connection failing."

Maya's voice trembled slightly.

"…that's people."

Silence.

Heavy.

Terrifying.

The man's voice returned.

Still calm.

Still controlled.

"Phase Two instability threshold reached."

Ethan's eyes sharpened.

"…you knew this would happen."

A pause.

Then—

"Of course."

Maya's chest tightened.

"…you're sacrificing them."

"No," he corrected.

A beat.

"I am refining the system."

That—

That broke something.

Ethan stepped forward.

His voice colder than before.

"…yeah."

A pause.

"You're done."

The connection between him and Maya flared.

Stronger.

Sharper.

More controlled than the chaos around them.

Maya looked at him—

And for the first time—

She understood.

They weren't just connected to the system.

They had influence over it.

More than anyone else.

"…we can stop this," she whispered.

Ethan nodded once.

"…yeah."

A pause.

"But not halfway."

She took a breath.

Steady.

Focused.

"…then we take control."

The system pulsed.

Reacting.

Listening.

The man's voice cut in—

For the first time—

Not calm.

"…you cannot override Phase Two."

Maya's eyes burned with determination.

"…watch us."

The connection between her and Ethan ignited—

Not wild.

Not overwhelming.

Precise.

Threads began shifting.

Re-routing.

Separating.

Stabilizing.

The chaos—

Started to slow.

The man's voice sharpened.

"…what are you doing?"

Ethan's response came instantly.

"…fixing your mess."

Across the city—

People gasped.

Voices faded.

Thoughts separated.

Not completely—

But enough.

Maya focused harder.

Pushing boundaries.

Testing limits.

"…we need to isolate the unstable links," she said quickly.

Ethan nodded.

"…and reinforce the rest."

The system responded—

Not resisting.

But following.

Because now—

It recognized them.

As something more.

The man went silent.

Watching.

Calculating.

Then—

Slowly—

He spoke again.

"…interesting."

Maya's heart pounded.

Because that tone—

Was worse than anger.

It was curiosity.

And that meant—

This wasn't over.

Not even close.
