Chapter 53 - When Reality Isn’t Real Anymore

Light swallowed them.

Not violently.

Not painfully.

Just… completely.

Maya's eyes snapped open.

Air rushed into her lungs like she had been drowning.

Her body jerked—

Cold.

Heavy.

Real.

She gasped sharply—

"…!"

The ceiling above her was white.

Still.

Unmoving.

No fragments.

No shifting code.

No darkness.

Just—

A room.

Machines beeping steadily beside her.

For a moment—

She didn't move.

Didn't think.

Because after everything—

This felt… wrong.

Too quiet.

Too normal.

Then—

"…Maya."

Her heart skipped.

That voice—

She turned her head quickly.

Ethan.

Sitting upright on the bed beside hers.

Alive.

Awake.

Watching her.

Relief hit her first.

Sharp.

Immediate.

"You're—"

"Yeah," he cut in.

A small exhale.

"I'm here."

A pause.

"You?"

Maya swallowed.

"…I think so."

Silence settled between them.

But not the old kind.

Not the distant one.

This one was—

Connected.

Faintly.

But undeniably.

Maya felt it again.

That thread.

Between them.

Subtle.

Like a whisper at the back of her mind.

She looked at him—

And he already knew.

"…you feel it too," she said quietly.

Ethan nodded.

"…yeah."

A pause.

"You don't even have to say it."

That should have scared her.

And it did.

A little.

But more than that—

It grounded her.

The door slid open suddenly.

A doctor rushed in—

Followed by two others.

"You're awake—good," he said quickly.

"We need to run immediate—"

He stopped.

Mid-sentence.

Frowning.

Looking between them.

"…that's not possible."

Ethan raised an eyebrow slightly.

"…what isn't?"

The doctor stepped closer.

Confused.

Concerned.

"Your vitals," he said.

"They were unstable for hours."

A pause.

"You shouldn't both regain consciousness at the exact same second."

Maya and Ethan exchanged a glance.

No words.

But understanding.

Before either of them could respond—

The lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

Everything froze.

The doctor stopped moving.

Mid-step.

One of the machines—

Paused mid-beep.

Even the air felt—

Still.

Maya's breath caught.

"…Ethan."

"…yeah."

His voice was low.

Sharp.

Focused.

"This isn't normal."

Then—

A screen across the room glitched.

Static flashing violently—

Before stabilizing.

A face appeared.

Familiar.

Cold.

Controlled.

The man from before.

Watching them.

"…you adapt quickly."

His voice filled the room—

Even though his lips barely moved.

Maya's eyes narrowed.

"…you're the one who tried to purge us."

A slight tilt of his head.

"Correct."

No denial.

No hesitation.

Ethan leaned back slightly—

Unbothered on the surface.

"…yeah?"

A pause.

"Didn't work."

The man's expression didn't change.

But something in his eyes sharpened.

"No," he said calmly.

"It didn't."

A beat.

"But it confirmed something far more valuable."

Maya's chest tightened.

"…what?"

The man stepped closer to the screen.

His image sharpening.

"You two," he said.

"Are no longer just users of Origin."

A pause.

"You are part of it."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Ethan scoffed lightly.

"…yeah."

"We figured that out already."

But Maya didn't speak.

Because she felt it.

The truth behind his words.

Deeper than what they had admitted.

The man continued.

"And that," he said,

"makes you both…"

A slight pause.

"…assets."

Maya's expression hardened instantly.

"We're not yours."

For the first time—

The man smiled.

Faint.

Dangerous.

"No," he said softly.

A pause.

"But you will be."

The room trembled suddenly—

Not physically—

But digitally.

Reality itself flickering at the edges.

Maya felt it instantly.

"…he's inside the system," she whispered.

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"…yeah."

"And now he's pushing it into the real world."

The man's voice cut through again.

"Phase Two has begun."

The screen glitched—

Then split—

Multiple feeds appearing.

Different locations.

Different people.

All frozen.

All paused—

Just like the doctor.

Maya's heart dropped.

"…what did you do?"

The man's answer came calmly.

"I removed the boundary."

A pause.

"Between your world…"

The screens flickered again—

Data bleeding into reality.

"…and mine."

Ethan sat up straighter.

Eyes sharp.

"…yeah."

"That's a problem."

Maya clenched her fists.

Because now—

It wasn't just about Origin anymore.

It wasn't contained.

It wasn't hidden.

It was spreading.

The man looked directly at them.

Through the screen.

Through the system.

Through everything.

"You changed Origin," he said.

A pause.

"So now…"

His voice dropped slightly.

"…we'll change the world."

The screen went black.

The room snapped back into motion—

The doctor stumbling forward.

Machines beeping wildly again.

Everything normal.

Except—

Nothing was.

Maya turned to Ethan.

Her voice steady.

Determined.

"…we can't let this happen."

Ethan met her gaze.

That same spark returning.

Stronger than before.

"…yeah."

A pause.

"Good thing we're not normal anymore."
