Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: Protection That Feels Like a Cage

The decision didn't come slowly. It came all at once like cold, clear, and final.

Rafael stood alone in his study, staring at the city lights stretching endlessly beyond the glass walls. Everything outside looked alive, free, untouched. Inside, everything felt controlled. Just the way he preferred it. Just the way it had always been.

But not anymore. His thoughts kept returning to one person.

Aria.

The memory of the evening replayed in his mind with sharp clarity that Elena's eyes were too observant and too calculating… the way she had watched Aria. Not casually. Not harmlessly. But like someone searching for something.

A weakness and Rafael knew the truth. Aria had become exactly that.

His weakness. His jaw tightened. That was something he could not afford. Not in his world with enemies who waited for the smallest mistake. Not with Elena, who never missed anything important.

If Elena found out Aria wouldn't just be hurt. She would be destroyed.

And that was something he would never allow so he made a decision not as a man but as someone who had learned long ago that emotions were dangerous.

He would remove the problem. He would remove her—from danger.

Aria was in her room when he came.

She was sitting on the edge of the bed, completely lost in her thoughts.

The knock on the door was soft.

"Come in," she said without looking up. The door opened.

She lifted her eyes and froze. Rafael stood there.

Something about him felt different tonight. Not distant like usual. Not cold in the same way like he had already decided something.

Her heart skipped without permission.

"You're here," she said quietly.

"I need to talk to you."

No softness. No delay.

Just that.

A strange feeling settled in her chest.

"About what?"

He stepped inside and closed the door behind him. The small click echoed louder than it should have.

Then he said it.

"Pack your things." Aria blinked.

"…What?"

"You're moving." The words didn't make sense at first.

She stared at him, waiting for him to say something else. Something that would explain it. He didn't.

"You're joking," she said, a small frown forming.

"I don't joke about things like this."

Her confusion turned into disbelief.

"Moving where?"

"To a different place."

"That's not an answer, Rafael."

"It's enough."

Something inside her snapped.

"You don't just come in here and decide that I'm moving like I'm some object you can shift around whenever you want."

His expression didn't change.

"This isn't a discussion."

The calmness in his voice made it worse. Her eyes burned not with tears, but anger.

"Then what is it? Another condition? Another part of this deal you never bothered to explain?"

There was a small pause.

"Yes."

That one word hit harder than everything else.

Aria let out a quiet, bitter laugh and looked away, running a hand through her hair.

"Unbelievable…"

Her voice dropped, softer now but heavier.

"You don't get to do this."

"I already am."

She turned back instantly.

"And what if I say no?"

For a moment, something flickered in his eyes. Something real. Something almost soft.

But it disappeared just as quickly.

"You won't."

Her chest tightened.

"And why are you so sure about that?"

"Because you agreed to the terms."That word again.

As if everything between them meant nothing more than an agreement written on paper.

She looked at him, hurt slipping through her anger.

"You really don't see it, do you?"

His eyes narrowed slightly. "See what?"

"This," she said, gesturing between them. "The way you treat everything like it's just business."

"It is business."

The answer came fast. Cold. Exact. It hurt more than she expected.

She held his gaze, something inside her quietly breaking.

"Then why does it feel personal?"

The words slipped out before she could stop them. He didn't answer.

Because he couldn't.

Instead, he stepped closer. Not enough to touch her, but enough to change the air between them.

"The place you're going," he said, his voice lower now, "is secure."

Her brows pulled together.

"Secure?"

"Yes."

"For what?"

"For you."

That made her pause.

Confusion mixed with anger.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you'll be safer there."

"Safer from what, Rafael?" He didn't answer. And that silence said everything. Her eyes widened slightly.

"You're hiding something."

"Nothing".

Her frustration came back stronger.

"You don't get to control my life and not even tell me why."

"I expect you to trust the result."

She almost laughed.

"Trust you?" There was disbelief in her voice now.

"You don't trust me enough to tell me the truth." He stayed silent.

Because she was right.

"It's not about trust," he said finally.

"Then what is it about?"

A pause.Then—

"Control."

The word was quiet but honest. Aria went still.

At least this time, he wasn't pretending.

"Fine," she said slowly, her voice steady but cold. "If you want control, then say it clearly."

His eyes locked onto hers.

"I'm moving you because I need control over the situation."

No hesitation. No regret.

She swallowed.

"And what do I get from this?"

A small shift passed through him.

"Freedom."

She blinked.

"…What?"

"You can work again."

Her breath caught.

"At your café."

For a moment, she just stared at him.

"You said I couldn't."

"I changed my mind."

Nothing about this made sense.

"You're restricting me and giving me freedom at the same time?"

"Yes."

"That's not how freedom works."

"It's how this will work."

Silence filled the room again. But this time, it felt different.

"And the condition?" she asked softly.

Because there had to be one.

He didn't answer right away.Then ...

"I can come to you whenever I want."Her heart skipped.

"And?" she whispered.

"And you don't get to refuse."That was it.

That was the real truth.

She looked at him, her thoughts spinning.

"You're giving me a life… but only on your terms."

"Yes."

"You can walk into it whenever you want although you are going to engage to someone else"

"Yes."

"And I have no choice."

"No."

Something twisted inside her.

Not just anger, something deeper and more painful.

"This isn't freedom," she said quietly.

"It's the closest thing you'll get." Silence again.

She looked at him carefully, trying to see past his control, his distance, his decisions.

And for a second she saw something.Something hidden and looked like fear. Then it was gone.

"…When do we leave?" she asked.

"Tonight."Of course.

No time to think or argue. She nodded slowly.

Not because she agreed but because she understood. This was never her choice.

As he turned to leave, she spoke again.

"Rafael."

He stopped but didn't turn.

"If this is really about keeping me safe…" she said softly,

"Then why does it feel like I'm losing something?" He didn't answer.

Because he didn't have one.

And that silence it said more than the truth ever could because he wasn't just protecting her from the world,he was protecting himself from her.
