Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 – The Beginning of Something Soft

The night grew deeper, but neither Arlen nor Mira felt the need to leave.

The moon hung high in the sky, its pale light reflecting on the surface of the quiet stream. The world felt still, almost as if time itself had slowed down just for them.

They stood side by side now.

Not too close.

Not too far.

A comfortable distance that didn't feel awkward.

It felt… right.

Mira gently sat down on a smooth stone near the water. After a brief hesitation, Arlen sat beside her.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

But this silence was different from before.

It wasn't filled with questions.

It was filled with presence.

Mira broke the silence softly.

"Do you always wander this far from your village?"

Arlen shook his head slightly.

"No. Today was different."

"How?"

He thought for a moment before answering.

"I felt like I needed to come here."

Mira looked at him, her expression thoughtful.

"…I felt the same."

Their eyes met again.

And for a brief second, something unspoken passed between them.

A quiet realization.

They both looked away at the same time.

A faint smile touched Mira's lips.

It was small.

But genuine.

---

The sound of the flowing water filled the air as Mira dipped her fingers into the stream again.

"Do you ever feel like something is missing?" she asked suddenly.

Arlen didn't answer immediately.

He leaned forward slightly, resting his arms on his knees.

"…All the time," he admitted.

Mira's fingers stilled in the water.

"I don't know what it is," she said softly. "But it feels like I lost something important."

Arlen looked at her.

"I think… it's not something," he said quietly.

Mira turned toward him.

"…Then what is it?"

Arlen hesitated.

Then he spoke in a low voice.

"Someone."

The word lingered between them.

Mira's chest tightened slightly.

She didn't know why that answer felt so real.

So accurate.

"…Yes," she whispered. "Someone."

For a moment, the world felt heavier.

As if both of them were standing at the edge of a memory they couldn't reach.

But instead of pain…

There was a strange comfort.

Because they weren't alone in that feeling.

---

A gentle breeze passed through the trees.

Mira pulled her shawl slightly closer around her shoulders.

Without thinking, Arlen spoke.

"Are you cold?"

She shook her head lightly.

"Not really."

But her voice was softer now.

Arlen hesitated, then removed the light cloth from his shoulder and held it out to her.

"You can take this… just in case."

Mira looked at the cloth.

Then at him.

For a brief moment, her eyes softened.

"…Thank you."

She accepted it gently.

Their fingers brushed again.

This time, neither of them pulled away immediately.

There was no shock.

No sudden reaction.

Just a quiet warmth that stayed for a moment longer than before.

Then slowly, they separated.

But the feeling remained.

---

Time passed without them noticing.

They talked about small things.

Their villages.

Their daily lives.

Simple stories.

Nothing important.

And yet…

Everything felt important.

Because they were sharing it with each other.

Mira found herself smiling more than usual.

Arlen found himself speaking more than he ever had.

It was strange.

How someone you just met could feel so close.

So familiar.

As if your heart had known them long before your mind did.

---

After some time, Mira looked up at the sky again.

"The stars are beautiful tonight," she said.

Arlen followed her gaze.

"…They are."

Mira tilted her head slightly.

"Do you think… they remember things?"

Arlen looked at her, slightly confused.

"Remember?"

She nodded.

"Like… everything that happens in this world. Every moment. Every person."

Arlen thought for a moment.

Then he spoke quietly.

"Maybe they don't forget."

Mira smiled faintly.

"I like that thought."

There was a pause.

Then she added softly—

"Then maybe… even if we forget something important… it still exists somewhere."

Arlen felt something shift inside his chest.

A quiet ache.

A quiet hope.

"…Maybe," he said.

---

The night slowly began to fade.

A faint light appeared on the horizon.

Dawn was approaching.

Mira stood up slowly.

"I should go back," she said.

Arlen stood as well.

"…Will I see you again?"

The question came out before he could stop himself.

Mira looked at him.

There was no hesitation this time.

"Yes."

One simple word.

But it carried certainty.

Not doubt.

Not confusion.

Just truth.

Arlen nodded.

"…Then I'll come back."

Mira smiled softly.

"I'll be here."

For a moment, they stood facing each other.

Neither of them wanted to leave.

But neither of them said it.

They didn't need to.

Because somehow…

They both already knew.

This was not the end of their meeting.

It was just the beginning.

---

As Mira walked back toward her home, she held the cloth he had given her close to her chest.

Her heart felt light.

Peaceful.

But deep inside…

There was also a quiet fear.

A feeling she couldn't explain.

As if something fragile had just begun.

And the world…

Had a habit of breaking fragile things.

---

Arlen stood there for a long time, watching her disappear into the distance.

Only when she was gone did he finally turn away.

But the moment stayed with him.

Her voice.

Her smile.

Her presence.

And that feeling…

That soft, unexplainable feeling.

For the first time in his life—

He felt like he had found something.

Or rather…

Someone.

---

Some connections don't begin in this life.

They continue from a story already written.

And no matter how many times the world tries to erase them—

They find their way back.
