Chapter 56 - Chapter 56 – The Enemy Within

Lyra's POV

Something had changed.

Not just in the Academy.

In me.

And this time—

I couldn't ignore it.

The corridors felt different.

Too quiet.

Not empty—

Controlled.

Like every movement, every breath, was being measured.

People didn't speak when I passed anymore.

They paused.

Watched.

Waited.

Like I might break.

Or explode.

Kaelen's hand brushed against mine as we walked, his presence steady, grounding.

He hadn't left my side since the training ground.

Not once.

"They've increased surveillance," he said quietly.

"I know."

I didn't need to see it.

I could feel it.

Patterns shifting.

Eyes lingering longer than they should.

Something tightening around us.

"They're preparing for something," he added.

No.

They weren't preparing.

They were waiting.

For me to fail.

"We don't give them a reason," I said.

Even as the words left my mouth—

I knew how fragile they were.

Because whatever was happening…

Wasn't entirely in my control anymore.

We didn't go to the training grounds.

Didn't go near the others.

Instead—

We went somewhere quiet.

Hidden.

The west tower.

Abandoned.

Dust-covered.

Forgotten by most.

The door creaked as we stepped inside.

The air was still.

Heavy.

"You're sure about this?" Kaelen asked.

"No," I said honestly.

"But I need answers."

Because if I didn't understand what was happening to me—

Someone else would try to.

And they wouldn't be gentle.

I stepped further into the room.

Closed my eyes.

Not fully.

Just enough.

This time—

I didn't reach blindly.

I listened.

At first—

Nothing.

Then—

A thread.

Faint.

But there.

My breath slowed.

My focus sharpened.

The shadows responded.

Not violently.

Not hungrily.

Purposefully.

They moved like something that understood direction.

That terrified me more than losing control ever had.

"Lyra?" Kaelen's voice was close now.

"I feel something," I whispered.

I followed it.

Carefully.

And then—

The world shifted.

Not around me.

Underneath.

Layers unfolded.

Magic.

Old.

Dormant.

Threaded through the very foundation of the Academy.

But beneath that—

Something else.

Something wrong.

"It's here," I said.

Kaelen stepped closer instantly.

"Where?"

I lowered my hand slowly.

The shadows followed.

Down.

Into the stone.

"There."

For a second—

Nothing happened.

Then—

The thread pulsed.

And something answered.

Kaelen's light flared immediately.

Bright.

Sharp.

"Step back," he said.

But I couldn't.

Because now—

It had noticed me.

The connection snapped tight—

And suddenly—

I wasn't in the tower anymore.

Darkness surrounded me.

Endless.

Cold.

And in it—

A presence.

Watching.

Waiting.

"You're learning."

The voice wasn't spoken.

It echoed inside my mind.

Calm.

Controlled.

Familiar.

My pulse spiked.

"You."

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

The one behind everything.

"You're inside the Academy," I said.

A soft shift in the darkness.

"Of course."

No hesitation.

No denial.

"How?" I demanded.

A quiet, almost amused pause.

"You opened the door."

My breath caught.

"No."

"You reached," he continued.

"Again and again."

Each word pressed into me.

"And each time," he said softly,

"You made the connection stronger."

My chest tightened.

Every moment I had used it.

Every time I had pushed further.

"I didn't mean to—"

"That doesn't matter."

Silence.

Then—

"You're beginning to understand what you are."

"I'm nothing like you," I said.

A pause.

Longer this time.

Then—

"Not yet."

Something inside me snapped.

"No."

This time—

I didn't pull back.

I pushed.

Hard.

The shadows surged—

Not outward—

Inward.

Toward him.

For a brief moment—

The darkness shifted.

And for the first time—

He reacted.

Then—

Everything shattered.

I gasped—

Falling backward—

Kaelen caught me instantly.

"Lyra!"

"I saw him," I breathed.

His expression darkened.

"Who?"

"The one behind all of this."

Silence fell between us.

"He's already here."

That changed everything.

We didn't stay.

We couldn't.

Because now—

This wasn't just about me.

It was inside the Academy.

Inside the walls.

Which meant—

Anyone could be part of it.

That realization followed us back.

It sat between us.

Heavy.

Unspoken.

"We tell the others," Kaelen said finally.

"No."

He frowned.

"Lyra—"

"If we tell them now, they lock everything down," I said.

"And if we don't," he countered,

"they walk into it blind."

Both options were bad.

"I need proof," I said.

"Proof of what?"

"That it's not just me."

"That this is real."

That someone—

Is already helping it.

Silence.

Then—

"Then we watch," he said.

"Everyone."

The word settled heavily.

Everyone.

A quiet sound behind us made me turn.

Nira stepped into the doorway.

"When do we ever do anything the easy way?" she said lightly.

I exhaled slowly.

"You heard that?"

"Enough," she said with a small smile.

Her gaze flicked between us.

Concerned.

Calm.

"We're still a team," she added.

Something in her voice was steady.

Grounding.

"If there's something inside this place," she continued,

"then we deal with it together."

Kaelen didn't respond immediately.

I studied her for a moment.

Nothing felt wrong.

Nothing obvious.

And yet—

A small, quiet part of me hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then it was gone.

"Together," I agreed.

Because right now—

We didn't have another choice.

Nira smiled slightly.

"Good," she said.

And for a brief moment—

Everything felt normal again.

But deep down—

Beneath the calm—

Beneath the fragile sense of control—

Something was shifting.

Not just inside me.

Inside everything.

And somewhere—

Hidden beneath layers of stone and silence—

Something waited.

Watching.

Listening.

And this time—

It wasn't alone.
