Chapter 43 - Chapter 43 – What Was Taken

The archives weren't meant to be entered twice in one week.

That much was clear the moment we reached the lower levels.

Guards lined the corridor leading down, their presence heavier than anywhere else in the academy. Not just watching—restricting. Every movement measured. Every breath noticed.

And still—

it didn't feel like enough.

"They've doubled security," Cassian muttered under his breath.

"They had to," Tarik replied quietly.

"Won't matter if the breach came from inside," Nira added.

No one argued with that.

Kaelen stepped forward first.

Of course he did.

Authority followed him now—not just because of who he was, but because of how he carried it. Controlled. Certain.

"We're going in," he said to the guard stationed at the entrance.

The guard hesitated.

For half a second.

Then stepped aside.

"Only briefly, Your Highness."

Kaelen didn't respond.

He didn't need to.

The doors opened.

And the moment they did—

I felt it.

My shadows reacted instantly.

Not violently.

But sharply.

Aware.

Wrong.

"This is where it started," I murmured.

Kaelen glanced at me. "The library."

I nodded slightly.

"Same feeling," I said.

But stronger.

More focused.

We stepped inside.

The air was colder here.

Not naturally.

Magically.

Layers of protection still lingered—barriers woven into the walls, the floors, the shelves themselves. Ancient magic. Structured. Controlled.

And yet—

Something had slipped through it.

"That shouldn't be possible," Cassian muttered, running a hand through his hair.

"It shouldn't," Tarik agreed.

Elsa stepped forward slowly.

Her presence shifted.

Not defensive.

Precise.

"Don't touch anything yet," she said.

We stilled.

She lifted her hand again—

And the air tightened.

Aether.

I felt it immediately.

The same anchoring pressure from training—

But stronger.

Focused.

Searching.

Her magic spread outward in careful lines, threading through the space between the shelves, the walls, the residual barriers.

Then—

it caught.

"There," she said quietly.

We followed her gaze.

A section near the back.

Nothing obvious.

Just… wrong.

I stepped closer.

My shadows moved ahead of me this time—not lashing out, not striking—

Feeling.

And when they reached it—

They recoiled.

Not in fear.

Recognition.

"This is it," I said.

Kaelen moved beside me instantly.

"What do you see?" he asked.

"Not see," I corrected softly.

"Feel."

I crouched slightly, letting my hand hover just above the surface of the stone.

The magic there was fractured.

Not broken.

Disturbed.

Like something had been carefully removed—

Without tearing the structure apart.

"They didn't force it," Tarik said behind me.

"No," Elsa agreed.

"They unlocked it."

Silence followed.

Because that only meant one thing.

Access.

Permission.

Inside knowledge.

Kaelen's expression hardened.

"What was here?" he asked.

One of the instructors stepped forward reluctantly.

"Records," he said.

"On what?" Kaelen pressed.

A pause.

Then—

"Ancient magical classifications."

My breath stilled.

Slow.

Cold.

"Define that," Cassian said.

The instructor hesitated again.

Then—

"Magic that predates the current system."

Nira frowned. "You mean like lost affinities?"

"Not lost," the instructor corrected.

"Restricted."

That word settled heavily in the room.

Restricted.

Not forgotten.

Hidden.

My shadows tightened slightly around me.

"Which ones?" I asked.

The instructor didn't answer immediately.

And that—

That told me everything.

"Which ones?" I repeated.

This time—

he did answer.

"Shadow variants."

Silence.

Complete.

Unavoidable.

I didn't move.

Didn't speak.

But I felt it.

Every shift in the room.

Every glance.

Every realization.

"They were looking for her," Cassian said quietly.

Not accusing.

Stating.

No one disagreed.

Kaelen stepped slightly closer to me.

Not obvious.

But deliberate.

"What exactly was taken?" he asked.

The instructor swallowed.

"Specific records on… a singular classification."

A pause.

Then—

"The Shadow Sovereign."

The world didn't tilt.

It didn't shatter.

But something inside me—

Shifted.

Deep.

Irreversible.

My shadows reacted instantly.

Not outward.

Inward.

Tightening.

Coiling.

Like they were protecting something—

Or hiding it.

"That's not a standard classification," Tarik said slowly.

"No," Elsa replied.

Her voice was quieter now.

Focused.

"It's not."

Nira looked between us. "Then what is it?"

No one answered.

Because no one needed to.

Not really.

I straightened slowly.

"They didn't just come here for information," I said.

Kaelen's gaze snapped to mine.

"They came to confirm it."

A pause.

"And now they have."

Silence settled again.

But this time—

It wasn't uncertainty.

It was direction.

"Can you trace anything else?" Kaelen asked Elsa.

She was already moving.

Already searching.

Her magic extended again, deeper this time, pushing against the residual distortion left behind.

Then—

it faltered.

Just slightly.

Her expression shifted.

"What is it?" I asked.

She didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"They didn't just take something."

A pause.

"They left something behind."

That hit harder than anything else.

"Where?" Cassian asked sharply.

Elsa turned slowly.

Looking directly at—

Me.

My shadows reacted instantly.

Not violently.

But sharply.

"No," I said.

But I felt it.

Of course I did.

A faint echo.

Deep.

Hidden.

Not inside me—

Near me.

Connected.

Like a mark I couldn't see.

Kaelen stepped forward immediately.

"What did they do?" he demanded.

Elsa's voice was steady.

"They anchored something to her presence."

Silence.

Cold.

Controlled.

"Explain," Tarik said.

"They can track her," Elsa said simply.

Everything in the room shifted.

Danger—

Immediate.

Real.

My shadows rose slightly around me.

Not out of control.

But aware.

Alert.

"They're not guessing anymore," I said quietly.

Kaelen's jaw tightened.

"They're hunting."

"No," Kaelen said sharply.

The word cut through the room before anyone else could speak.

Not denial.

Refusal.

"We're not leaving it like that."

His attention snapped to Elsa.

"Remove it."

Direct.

Immediate.

Elsa didn't react right away.

Which, somehow—

was worse.

"It's not that simple," she said.

"Then make it simple," Cassian snapped.

"Cassian—" Nira started.

"No," he cut in, running a hand through his hair. "We're just going to stand here and accept that she's being tracked?"

"We're not accepting it," Tarik said firmly.

"We're understanding it."

"That's not good enough."

"It has to be," Elsa said.

Calm.

Too calm.

Kaelen stepped closer to her.

"You said it's anchored to her," he said. "That means it can be undone."

Elsa finally met his gaze fully.

"It means it's attached to her magic," she corrected.

A pause.

"Not sitting on top of it."

That shifted everything.

My shadows tightened instinctively.

"What happens if you try to remove it?" I asked.

Elsa hesitated.

Not long.

But enough.

"It could destabilize your magic," she said.

Silence.

Cold.

"Define destabilize," Cassian said.

Elsa didn't look away from me.

"Loss of control," she said.

A beat.

"Or worse."

My chest tightened.

But not from fear.

From clarity.

Kaelen stepped closer to me instantly.

"No," he said again.

This time quieter.

More dangerous.

"We don't risk that."

"We don't have a choice," I replied.

His gaze snapped to mine.

"Yes, we do."

"They can track me," I said.

"I know."

"Then they can reach me."

His jaw tightened.

"They'll have to go through me first."

Something in my chest shifted at that.

Not soft.

Not fragile.

Sharp.

Real.

"That's not a plan," I said.

"It's enough."

"No, it's not."

Silence stretched between us.

Not distant.

Not uncertain.

Clashing.

"I won't let this sit inside me," I said quietly.

"It's not inside you," Elsa corrected.

A pause.

"But it's close enough."

I turned to her.

"Can you contain it?" I asked.

This time—

she didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

That got everyone's attention.

"How?" Tarik asked.

"I can isolate the connection," she said. "Stabilize the area around it. Limit how far it reaches."

Cassian frowned. "So they can still track her."

"Yes."

"Then what's the point?"

Elsa's gaze didn't waver.

"They won't be able to influence it."

That mattered.

A lot.

"Do it," I said.

Kaelen's hand caught my wrist instantly.

"Lyra—"

"I'm not asking," I said.

Not harsh.

But firm.

His grip tightened slightly.

Not to stop me.

To hold me there.

A moment passed between us.

Then—

slowly—

he let go.

But he didn't step back.

"I'm staying," he said.

"Of course you are," I replied.

Elsa stepped forward.

Closer than she had before.

Her presence shifted again—

Focused.

Precise.

"Aether works best with stillness," she said.

I didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Just watched her.

"Don't resist it," she added.

"I won't."

That wasn't entirely true.

But I meant it enough.

She lifted her hand.

And the air changed.

Sharply this time.

Not just pressure—

Control.

Her magic wrapped around me—not invasive, not forceful—

But absolute.

My shadows reacted instantly.

Rising.

Coiling.

Instinct.

"Lyra," Kaelen's voice cut in.

Grounding.

Steady.

"I'm here."

I exhaled slowly.

Letting the tension ease just slightly.

Elsa's magic pressed deeper.

Searching.

Locating.

Then—

it found it.

I felt it immediately.

A sharp pull—

Not pain.

But wrong.

There.

Hidden just beneath the surface of my magic.

"Hold it," Elsa said.

"I am," I replied through clenched teeth.

My shadows surged—

Not outward.

Inward.

Containing.

Restricting.

For the first time—

I wasn't fighting them.

I was using them.

Elsa's power tightened around the connection.

Layer by layer.

Sealing it.

Locking it down.

Then—

Stillness.

Complete.

The pressure eased.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Until—

It was gone.

Not removed.

Contained.

I exhaled sharply.

My shadows dropped immediately—

Not weak.

Controlled.

Different.

Elsa lowered her hand.

"It's done," she said.

Silence followed.

Then—

"How long will it hold?" Tarik asked.

Elsa didn't look away from me.

"As long as she does."

That answer settled heavily.

Because it wasn't reassurance.

It was responsibility.

Kaelen stepped closer again.

"You alright?" he asked quietly.

I nodded.

But it wasn't automatic this time.

"I can feel it," I admitted.

His expression darkened.

"Where?"

"Not… active," I said. "Just…"

A pause.

"Waiting."

That was worse.

Because now—

So were we.

And for the first time—

It wasn't the academy under threat.

It was me.

Somewhere—

beyond the walls—

beyond the wards—

Something stirred.

Not searching.

Not waiting.

Following.
