Chapter 27 - House Lunaris

Velkaris Prime had many rules.

Some were written.

Most weren't.

One unwritten rule was simple:

If Kael Virex looked concerned, something was wrong.

If Kael looked calm?

Something was very wrong.

This morning he looked calm.

Eryndor sat across from him inside a small café near the Scholar District.

Rain tapped softly against the windows.

A fireplace crackled nearby.

Several merchants discussed taxes.

A pair of adventurers argued over whose fault an exploded wagon had been.

Normal sounds.

Normal people.

Normal life.

I should enjoy moments like this.

Eryndor wrapped his fingers around a cup of tea.

Because they never last.

Across from him Kael stared at a file.

Not reading it.

Staring.

Which somehow felt worse.

"What does it say?"

Eryndor asked.

Kael sighed.

"It says my day is ruined."

"Specifically?"

"House Lunaris."

"..."

"That's all?"

"Trust me."

Kael took a sip.

"That's enough."

The door opened.

A gust of cold air entered.

Several patrons looked up.

Then immediately looked away.

Not out of fear.

Out of instinct.

A young woman entered.

Silver-blonde hair.

Gray eyes.

Dark blue coat.

A book tucked beneath one arm.

Nothing about her appearance screamed danger.

Which made her dangerous.

Kael noticed immediately.

Interesting.

The woman approached the counter.

Ordered tea.

Collected it.

Then walked directly toward their table.

Eryndor frowned.

"Do we know her?"

"No."

Kael answered.

"Then why is she—"

The woman stopped beside them.

Looked at Eryndor.

Looked at Kael.

Then at Orvayn.

"Which one of you is Eryndor?"

Silence.

Kael slowly pointed.

The woman nodded.

Then sat down.

Uninvited.

"..."

"..."

"..."

"You're smaller than expected."

Eryndor blinked.

"Excuse me?"

"Most reports described you as more intimidating."

"I wasn't aware reports existed."

"Oh."

She sipped her tea.

"They do."

Kael nearly choked.

This is already entertaining.

The woman extended a hand.

"Elira Voss."

Eryndor shook it.

Immediately.

Something happened.

Not power.

Not Dynamis.

Not a Concept.

Recognition.

The strange feeling one experiences when meeting someone important.

Neither understood why.

Both noticed it.

Neither mentioned it.

Because that would be awkward.

And both were intelligent enough to know that.

Unfortunately.

Kael wasn't kind enough to let it go.

"You both noticed it."

"Noticed what?"

Eryndor asked.

"Exactly."

Elira sighed.

"I can already tell you're going to be annoying."

Kael looked genuinely pleased.

"Thank you."

Meanwhile.

Across the city.

Cathedral of Binding Light.

The secret council had reconvened.

This time the atmosphere was worse.

A report rested on the table.

One sentence.

A single sentence.

Yet nobody wanted to read it aloud.

Finally Seraphine did.

"House Lunaris has entered the city."

Silence.

One Cardinal cursed.

Another closed his eyes.

A third simply laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because the alternative was concern.

And concern felt more dangerous.

"They never move without reason."

"No."

Seraphine agreed.

"They don't."

Her thoughts drifted elsewhere.

To ancient archives.

Forgotten records.

Old warnings.

When the Moon moves...

Something has already begun.

She hated how often old prophecies turned out to be correct.

Back at the café.

Orvayn arrived carrying books.

Again.

Eryndor wasn't surprised anymore.

Elira looked horrified.

"How many books is that?"

"Eight."

"Why?"

"Research."

"Research into what?"

"Everything."

"..."

"..."

Elira turned toward Eryndor.

"Is he serious?"

"Unfortunately."

"That's unhealthy."

Orvayn looked genuinely offended.

"Knowledge has never harmed anyone."

Three people immediately looked at him.

"..."

"..."

"..."

The scholar sighed.

"Fine."

"Knowledge has harmed many people."

"Thank you."

Kael replied.

The door suddenly burst open.

A Containment Officer rushed inside.

Breathing heavily.

Every instinct Kael possessed activated immediately.

The officer saluted.

"Captain."

"What happened?"

The answer came instantly.

"Concept User conflict."

The room became silent.

"Location?"

"Southern District."

"Casualties?"

"Unknown."

Kael stood.

Eclipsion moved with him.

The sword remained sheathed.

Yet the atmosphere changed.

A subtle pressure spread outward.

Elira noticed.

For the first time.

So this is Kael Virex.

Not the man.

The Concept User.

The difference mattered.

Very much.

Minutes later.

The Southern District.

Crowds had already evacuated.

Containment officers established a perimeter.

Military terminology echoed across the area.

"Secure the eastern flank!"

"Second squad advance!"

"Maintain formation!"

At the center stood two Concept Users.

One wielded fire.

Not literally.

That wasn't his Concept.

His Concept was:

Ember

The second wielded:

Momentum

The street around them had been devastated.

Stone shattered.

Buildings damaged.

Reality strained.

Neither combatant appeared willing to stop.

"Wonderful."

Kael muttered.

"I was having tea."

He stepped forward.

The two fighters ignored him.

Big mistake.

Kael sighed.

His hand touched Eclipsion.

Dynamis flowed.

Not much.

Just enough.

Reality responded.

[ CONCEPT: SEVERANCE ]

Silence.

Immediate.

Absolute.

The street froze.

Even the fire paused.

Even momentum hesitated.

Both fighters turned.

Too late.

Kael drew Eclipsion.

One slash.

Nothing exploded.

Nothing shattered.

Nothing dramatic happened.

Then—

The battle ended.

Both Concepts disconnected.

Not destroyed.

Not defeated.

Disconnected.

Kael had severed the conflict itself.

The two combatants staggered.

Confused.

One looked around.

"What happened?"

Kael sheathed Eclipsion.

"I got involved."

The officer beside Eryndor whispered.

"...That's terrifying."

Eryndor didn't answer.

Because he agreed.

Nearby.

Elira watched silently.

For the first time.

A smile appeared.

Not because Kael was strong.

Because she finally understood something.

Interesting.

These people aren't normal.

And somehow...

That made her want to stay.
