Chapter 8 - The Return

The gates of Solaris had never looked so cold.

I stood before them, Dorian's hand in mine, my heart pounding against my ribs. Behind us, the combined army waited—Solarian and Umbran soldiers standing side by side, proof that the impossible was possible.

Before us, the High Council waited too.

And they did not look pleased.

"You've brought the enemy to our doorstep," High Lumina Seraphine said from her throne. Her golden eyes swept over Dorian like he was something she'd scraped off her shoe.

"I've brought the man who helped me save the Crystal," I said. "The man who's bonded to me for life. The man I love."

Gasps echoed through the chamber.

Seraphine's face didn't change. "Love."

"Yes, Grandmother. Love. The thing you told me was weakness."

"I told you emotion was weakness. Love is... different."

"Is it? Because it feels an awful lot like emotion to me."

Dorian squeezed my hand. Through the bond, I felt his pride—and his terror.

You're amazing, he sent.

I know, I sent back.

He almost laughed. I felt him swallow it down.

"The bond," Seraphine said. "Show me."

I pulled off my glove. Dorian pulled off his. The marks blazed—gold and silver, swirling together, pulsing in rhythm with our heartbeats.

Seraphine stared for a long moment.

Then she stood.

"You understand what this means," she said. "If we accept this bond—if Solaris accepts a Shadow-Weaver into our midst—the war changes. Everything changes."

"I know."

"Your children will be abominations to both realms."

"My children will be proof that peace is possible."

"You're naive."

"I'm hopeful." I stepped closer to Dorian. "There's a difference."

Seraphine's eyes softened. Just slightly. Just for a moment.

"You remind me of your mother," she said quietly. "Before she left. Before she broke my heart."

"Mom's alive. She's helping the moderates rebuild. She wants to come home."

"I know." Seraphine's voice cracked. "She sent word. I haven't responded."

"Maybe you should."

Silence.

Then, slowly, Seraphine nodded.

"The bond is recognized," she announced to the council. "The Shadow-Weaver is granted temporary residence in Solaris, pending review. And the Twilight Pass will be declared neutral territory—governed by the bonded ones, if they'll accept."

Dorian's jaw dropped. I'm sure mine did too.

"What?" we said together.

"You heard me." Seraphine sat back down. "You two started this. You proved it's possible. The Pass is yours to protect, if you want it."

I looked at Dorian. He looked at me.

"Yes," we said together.

That night, we stood alone in the Pass.

The sun had set. The moons had risen. And for the first time in centuries, the sky held both stars and the last glow of sunset.

"Wardens of the Twilight Pass," Dorian said. "Has a nice ring to it."

"It has a lot of responsibility."

"We're good at responsibility."

"You're terrible at responsibility."

"Details." He pulled me close. "We'll figure it out. We always do."

I looked up at him—at this reckless, feeling, impossible man who had changed everything.

"I used to think emotion was weakness," I said quietly. "I used to think locking everything away made me strong."

"And now?"

"Now I know the truth." I touched his face. "Feeling everything—the pain, the fear, the joy, the love—that's the real strength. You taught me that."

His eyes shone. "You taught me that hiding behind jokes isn't living. That being seen—truly seen—is worth the risk."

"Then we taught each other."

"Balance." He smiled. "Like the Crystal said."

"Like the Crystal knew."

He kissed me—slow and sweet and full of promise. Around us, the Pass hummed with quiet magic. Above us, stars and sunset shared the sky.

When we broke apart, I was laughing.

"What?" he asked.

"Nothing. Everything." I shook my head. "A year ago, I was alone. Empty. Afraid to feel anything. Now I'm here. With you. Wardens of a place that didn't exist before us."

"Scared?"

"Terrified."

"Good." He grinned. "Me too. Let's be terrified together."

I took his hand. "Together."

And hand in hand, we walked toward our future.
