Chapter 23 - “Friendship by Force”

Both of them are still fighting, pulling each other's hair, when the teacher of the fifth period arrives. She tells them to leave each other, but neither of them listens.

The teacher keeps slapping both of them, and only after that does Satyam finally let go of Rati's hair. But Rati is still holding tightly onto his hair.

Even after being slapped so much, when Rati doesn't let go, the teacher gently tries to explain,

"Rati, what happened? Why are you fighting? Look how tightly you're holding his hair. He's in pain—let him go."

"No. First tell him to become my friend."

"Satyam, just be her friend."

"No, I won't."

"Why?"

"Because my mother has forbidden me."

The teacher then says,

"Rati, if someone doesn't want to be your friend, why do you want to force them? If someone forced you like this, would you like it?"

"If it were someone like me, then yes."

"But you are not like Satyam, right? Then?"

"But I am good, right?"

"Yes, you are good. But Satyam doesn't think so. So first make him विश्वास (believe) that you are good. Then he will become your friend on his own."

Hearing this, Rati thinks for a moment and then lets go of Satyam's hair.

The teacher then tells both of them not to fight again and starts teaching the poem.

When Rati sits in the bus, Rama is sitting with Khushi. Without saying anything to Rama, Rati goes and sits on another seat.

After some time, Rama notices Rati and comes to sit beside her.

"Rati, Khushi is in your class, right?"

"Yes."

"Is she your friend?"

"No."

"Then you should become friends with her."

"Why should I? I don't like her."

"But she is very nice. Look, I have some powder (Rama had kept some powder in a piece of paper). You give this to her and then ask her to be your friend, okay?"

Rati thinks to herself,

"I can give this to Satyam and make him my friend."

Without saying anything, she takes the small packet of powder from Rama's hand. It has a very nice fragrance.

The next day, when Rati comes to school, she says to Satyam,

"Here, see what this is."

Satyam opens the paper packet and looks at it, then asks,

"Why are you giving this to me?"

"It belongs to my sister. You can keep it—it smells very nice."

But Satyam throws it on the ground. Seeing this, Rati feels very angry, but she controls her anger and silently starts thinking about taking revenge.

During the second period, Rati goes to the toilet. The boys' toilet is right next to it. When she sees Satyam going inside, she locks the door from outside.

By then, the bell has already rung, and all the children have gone back to their classes.

Satyam keeps calling out for a long time, but no one comes. Eventually, he gets tired and falls asleep there.

After the entire third period passes and Rati still doesn't see Satyam returning, she goes there as soon as the bell rings. Knocking on the door, she says,

"Satyam, are you inside?"

By then, he has woken up and replies,

"Yes, I am."

"Okay, then stay there."

Satyam gets nervous and says,

"Wait, at least open the door!"

"Why should I? Am I your servant?"

"Are you crazy?"

"No. My hair is tied properly, my clothes are clean, and I talk nicely—so how am I crazy?"

"Stop talking nonsense and open the door!"

"But why should I? You're not even my friend."

"If I become your friend, will you open it?"

"Yes."

"Okay, I'm your friend."

As soon as he says this, Rati opens the latch of the door. She feels very happy for making Satyam her friend.

After school, when Rati gets on the bus, Rama asks her,

"Rati, did you become friends with Khushi?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because I don't like her."

"But I told you she is nice."

Rati gets irritated and says angrily,

"If you like her so much, then go sit with her. Why are you sitting with me?"

Saying this, Rati angrily goes and sits on the last seat of the bus.

Rama feels hurt, but she is also angry with Rati, so both of them stop talking to each other.

Rama is happy with Khushi, and Rati is happy thinking that she has made Satyam her friend.

When Rati gets down at her father's shop, she sees that her aunt has come there.

When her aunt sees Rati, she says,

"Oh Rati, tomorrow everyone is going to my nephew's wedding. Will you come too?"

Rati ignores her and walks inside.
