The heavy iron door to the holding wing didn't just open; it slammed inward with a deafening screech of tortured metal as the heavy locking latch gave way under a furious assault.
The heavy slab of iron bounced violently against the stone wall, sending rust flakes raining down onto the floor. Standing in the doorway was a furious, red-haired whirlwind of a girl. Kushina's hair was fanning out behind her in jagged, floating tendrils, her face flushed red, and her hands clenched into white-knuckled fists.
Behind her, two ANBU guards were awkwardly scrambling to regain their footing. Neither had wanted to lay hands on a protected Uzumaki child, and Kushina had taken full advantage of their hesitation by shoving past them and kicking the door lock right off its frame.
"Kushina!" Hiruzen said, his hand freezing midway to his pipe. "I strictly ordered you to wait above—"
"I don't care about your orders, Lord Hokage, ya know!" Kushina shouted, stomping directly past the flustered guards and into the center of the cell. "He's nine years old! He's an Uzumaki! You have him chained to the floor like he's some kind of bloodthirsty monster! Is this how we treat family in the Leaf!?"
"Kushina-sama," one of the ANBU groaned from the doorway, holding a hand up in a helpless gesture. "The boy is an unregistered variable who—"
"Shut up!" she snapped, spinning around and pointing a sharp finger at the guard's mask. "He's a kid whose grandfather just died! If you put iron cuffs on him again, I'm going to kick you down the stairs!"
Sitting against the wall, Kisuke blinked, looking up from his iron wrist bindings to the red-haired tornado currently terrorizing the Third Hokage's personal security detail. A slow, wide grin broke across his face.
"Well, well," Kisuke said, rattling his chains with a deliberate, loud clang. "If it isn't the Red Tomato. Did you break the lock on purpose, or do you always enter rooms like an invading army?"
Kushina whirled back to face him, her teeth grinding together. "What did you just call me!?"
"Red Tomato," Kisuke repeated happily, squirming against the stone to get comfortable. "You're all red in the face, your hair is doing that crazy spiky thing, and you look like you're about to pop. Seriously, thanks for the rescue attempt, but maybe save the grand entrance for when I'm not trapped in a dust cloud."
"I am trying to help you, you ungrateful idiot!" Kushina yelled, stepping up to him and jabbing her thumb into her own chest. "You're sitting there tied up in iron and making fun of my hair! You should be begging me to get you out of here!"
"Begging? To a tomato?" Kisuke snorted, turning his head away. "I have my dignity. Besides, your face is turning darker than your hair. If you get any redder, the Hokage's gonna try to slice you up for salad."
"Why, you little—!"
"Kushina. Kisuke-kun. Enough," Hiruzen interrupted, his voice dropping into a low, firm register that instantly cut through the shouting. He pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a long, weary stream of pipe smoke.
Footsteps echoed softly down the ruined hallway. Minato Namikaze slipped past the two flustered ANBU, bowing respectfully to the Hokage while giving Kushina a helpless, apologetic look. Right behind him was Shikaku Nara, who leaned his shoulder against the doorframe, looking as though the entire situation was draining years off his life.
"Lord Hokage," Minato said, rubbing the back of his neck. "I apologize. We tried to keep her in the waiting room, but... well, Kushina was very persistent."
"Persistent is a nice word for kicking the lock apart while three ANBU tried not to tackle her," Shikaku muttered, rubbing his eyes with a heavy sigh. "Trying to stop her was way more troublesome than just letting her through. What a drag."
"Minato-kun," Hiruzen said, turning a sharp eye on the young prodigy. "I expect my ANBU to be able to secure a basic detention level."
"With all due respect, Lord Hokage," Minato replied smoothly, his tone polite but entirely unyielding as his eyes flicked down to Kisuke's iron-bound wrists, "Kisuke came with us willingly. He agreed to honor his grandfather's last wish. Treating him like an enemy infiltrator before he even had a chance to enter the village properly is... unnecessary."
"He's an Uzumaki!" Kushina demanded again, her voice softening just a fraction, though her eyes remained fiercely fixed on Hiruzen. "You don't know what that's like! Getting dumped somewhere strange, having masked people watch everything you do, everybody deciding what you're supposed to be before they even ask what you want! He's all alone, Lord Hokage! He doesn't have anyone else!"
Kisuke's playful grin faded slightly. He looked up at Kushina, catching the raw, defensive heat in her eyes. She didn't know him. They had met only hours ago, argued over tomatoes on the road, and exchanged insults the entire way to Konoha. But standing here, yelling at the ruler of the Leaf Village on his behalf, she was fighting for him with an intense, instinctual ferocity.
He didn't fully understand why she cared so much, but beneath her hot-headed temper, he could feel the sharp, aching pulse of her genuine concern through his Kagura Mind's Eye. It wasn't pity. It was the fierce, stubborn solidarity of someone who knew exactly what it felt like to be locked in a cage under watchful eyes.
"Kushina," Hiruzen said gently, his expression softening as he looked at the young girl. "I understand your feelings. Truly. But as Hokage, I cannot simply ignore security protocol for an unidentified Uzumaki with chakra reserves of this magnitude."
"Then let him stay with me!" Kushina blurted out instantly. "I'll watch him! If he tries to run away or blow up a building, I'll hit him!"
"Hey! I'm right here!" Kisuke shouted from the floor. "I don't need a tomato babysitter!"
"Shut up, Kisuke, I'm saving your life!"
"You just threatened to hit me!"
"Silence, both of you," Hiruzen said, raising a hand. He turned his gaze back to Kisuke, weighing the situation carefully. The current containment was far too harsh, and keeping the boy chained like an enemy was actively destroying any chance of winning his trust.
"I agree that our current arrangement requires immediate reconsideration," Hiruzen acknowledged, his voice measured. "However, until I have verified his background and established an appropriate security protocol, the procedure stands. He remains under formal detention."
"Lord Hokage!" Kushina protested, her voice rising again. "You can't just leave him tied up in—"
Before Hiruzen could answer or Kushina could explode further, Kisuke's posture suddenly went rigid.
His eyes widened, his head snapping toward the broken doorway. Beneath his skin, his Kagura Mind's Eye flared to absolute life, tracking a vast, old, and unnervingly controlled presence descending through the upper corridors of the facility.
It wasn't hostile. It wasn't erratic like Kushina's temper or sharp like Minato's speed. It was immense, deeply rooted, and perfectly quiet. Like an ocean compressed inside a delicate glass vessel. The sheer volume of the chakra was staggering, but what made Kisuke's breath catch in his throat was its distinct, undeniable texture.
It felt heavy. It felt dense. It felt strangely, undeniably like Kushina's chakra and his own.
"Whoa," Kisuke whispered, his sarcastic mouth falling slightly open as he stared past the iron door and into the dark hallway. "Who... who is that?"
Hiruzen, sensing the sudden shift in the room, slowly stood up from his stool, turning his eyes toward the corridor as soft, measured footsteps echoed outside.
"Ah," Hiruzen said quietly, a look of profound respect washing over his weathered face. "It seems our most distinguished elder has arrived."
