Chapter 39: The Weight of Forgiveness
The mansion felt different that evening.
Not quiet.
Not loud either.
Just… heavy.
The kind of silence that sits in the room and presses on everyone's chest.
Three days had passed since the truth exploded between them.
Three days since Care revealed she was Carolyn.
Three days since the group learned the story of the girl who had been left behind.
And in those three days, nothing had been the same.
The living room — once full of laughter, teasing, music, and chaotic arguments — had become a place people walked through carefully, like stepping around broken glass.
No one said it out loud.
But everyone knew the same thing.
The group of ten wasn't whole anymore.
---
Lyra hadn't eaten properly for a week.
At first, no one noticed.
Lyra had always been the energetic one — loud, dramatic, teasing everyone, especially Alex.
But now she barely spoke.
She sat quietly most of the time.
Her eyes were always red.
Her hands trembled sometimes.
And worst of all… she avoided looking at Care.
Ash wasn't much better.
She tried to act normal. Tried to smile. Tried to talk.
But guilt clung to her like a shadow.
The group was angry.
Not screaming angry.
The quiet kind.
The disappointed kind.
Ben barely talked to them.
Nova stayed beside Care constantly.
Daisy looked heartbroken.
Joong kept shaking his head whenever the past came up.
Kevin tried to lighten the mood, but even he eventually stopped trying.
And Alex…
Alex had fought with Lyra.
Badly.
It had happened two nights ago.
---
"You can't just stop eating!" Alex had snapped.
Lyra stood near the window, arms crossed.
"I'm fine."
"You're not fine."
"I'm fine, Alex."
"No, you're not! You're punishing yourself like that'll fix something!"
Lyra's voice broke.
"What do you want me to do then?!"
Her words echoed in the room.
"What do you want from me? I already know I messed up! I already know we abandoned her! You think I don't hate myself for that?!"
Alex froze.
Lyra's eyes filled with tears.
"We were kids…" she whispered. "We were scared. We thought adults would help her. We thought—"
Her voice shattered.
"We thought she'd be okay."
Silence.
Then Alex said the one thing he shouldn't have.
"You should've gone back."
Lyra stared at him like he'd just stabbed her.
Slowly… she nodded.
"Yeah."
Her voice was hollow.
"I should have."
She walked past him after that.
And they hadn't spoken since.
---
Now, three days later, Care stood in the center of the living room.
Everyone had gathered.
Alex.
Lyra.
Ash.
Nova.
Cole.
Joong.
Daisy.
Ben.
Kevin.
Ten people.
Ten pieces of something that had once felt unbreakable.
Care looked at them one by one.
Her hands were shaking slightly.
But her voice was steady.
"I called everyone here because… I need to say something."
No one interrupted.
Even Lyra slowly looked up.
Care took a deep breath.
"I know the past week has been… painful."
Her eyes moved toward Ash and Lyra.
Both of them looked like they hadn't slept in days.
"And I know everyone is angry."
Ben shifted.
Daisy wiped her eyes.
Joong crossed his arms.
Care swallowed.
"But I've been thinking."
A pause.
"Thinking about everything."
Her voice softened.
"When I found those photos… I felt like my world shattered."
Her fingers curled slightly.
"For years I thought the people I trusted most just… left me."
Her voice trembled.
"And when I saw that it was you two…"
She looked at Lyra.
Then Ash.
"I didn't know how to feel."
Lyra lowered her head again.
Ash closed her eyes.
Care continued quietly.
"I was angry."
Silence filled the room.
"I was hurt."
Her breath shook.
"And part of me wanted to hold onto that anger."
Nova watched her carefully.
"But then… I remembered something."
Care looked at them again.
"We were children."
The room went still.
"We were all children."
Her voice softened.
"Scared. Confused. Alone."
She walked a few steps forward.
"I had no family left."
Her eyes flickered with pain.
"But you two… you had families telling you what to do. Adults deciding things. Adults saying what was right and wrong."
Ash's shoulders trembled.
Lyra clenched her fists.
Care took another breath.
"So I asked myself a question."
Her voice grew quieter.
"Would I want to be judged forever… for something I did when I was ten years old?"
No one spoke.
Care shook her head slightly.
"No."
Tears finally slipped down her face.
"So today…"
She looked directly at them.
"I'm letting it go."
The room froze.
Ash blinked.
Lyra slowly lifted her head.
Care's voice broke.
"I forgive you."
Silence.
Complete silence.
For a moment no one moved.
Then Ash started crying.
Not quietly.
Not softly.
She covered her face as her shoulders shook violently.
Lyra didn't move at first.
She just stared at Care like she couldn't believe what she heard.
Then suddenly—
She stepped forward.
And before anyone could react—
She wrapped her arms around Care.
Tightly.
Desperately.
"I'm sorry."
Her voice cracked violently.
"I'm so sorry."
Tears streamed down her face.
"I should have looked for you. I should have tried harder. I should have fought them. I should have—"
Care hugged her back.
"No."
Lyra shook her head violently.
"I left you alone."
Care's voice was gentle.
"We were kids."
Ash joined the hug next.
Crying harder than anyone.
"I'm sorry, Carolyn."
That name echoed softly.
Care smiled through tears.
"It's Care."
Ash nodded quickly.
"Care."
One by one, the others stepped forward.
Nova wrapped her arms around them.
Cole joined.
Ben followed.
Daisy hugged everyone from the side.
Joong muttered something emotional in Korean before joining too.
Kevin squeezed into the group.
Finally Alex stepped closer.
He hesitated.
Then gently placed a hand on Lyra's shoulder.
Lyra looked up at him.
Her eyes were tired.
But soft.
"I forgive you too," Alex said quietly.
Lyra's lips trembled.
And then the group hug fully closed.
Ten people.
Holding onto each other.
Like they were afraid someone might disappear if they let go.
For the first time in days…
The tension began to break.
Daisy laughed through tears.
Kevin muttered, "This is the most emotional group hug in history."
Ben sniffed loudly.
Joong rolled his eyes but didn't move away.
And Care…
Care felt something she hadn't felt in years.
Peace.
But suddenly—
Lyra swayed slightly.
Alex noticed first.
"Lyra?"
Her grip loosened.
Her face had gone pale.
Ash frowned.
"Lyra…?"
Lyra's breathing had become shallow.
She looked at Care.
Then at everyone.
Her voice came out weak but emotional.
"I'm really glad…"
She swallowed hard.
"...that our family is whole again."
Her legs buckled.
"Lyra!"
Before she could hit the ground—
Alex caught her.
The room exploded into panic.
"Lyra!"
"She's fainted!"
"Move back!"
"Give her space!"
Alex held her tightly.
His voice was shaking.
"Lyra! Hey! Lyra, wake up!"
She didn't respond.
Daisy covered her mouth.
"Oh my god…"
Nova quickly knelt down beside them.
"She's breathing."
Ben ran to grab water.
Joong brought a pillow.
Kevin rushed to open windows.
Ash stood frozen.
Her voice barely came out.
"She… she hasn't eaten properly for days."
Everyone looked at her.
Alex's heart dropped.
"What?"
Ash wiped her eyes.
"I tried to make her eat but she kept saying she wasn't hungry."
Care felt guilt stab her chest.
Nova checked Lyra's pulse.
"Her pulse is weak."
Alex gently brushed hair from Lyra's face.
His voice was breaking now.
"You idiot…"
His forehead touched hers.
"You should've told us."
For the first time in days…
His fear was stronger than his anger.
"Lyra… please wake up."
The room held its breath.
Seconds passed.
Then—
Lyra stirred slightly.
A small breath escaped her lips.
Alex nearly collapsed in relief.
"There you go…"
Nova sighed.
"She's just exhausted and weak."
Ben handed water.
Daisy wiped Lyra's face gently.
Ash cried again.
Care knelt beside them.
Her voice was soft.
"We're taking care of each other from now on."
Everyone nodded.
No arguments.
No hesitation.
Because after everything…
They all understood something important.
Family wasn't about never making mistakes.
It was about choosing to stay.
Choosing to forgive.
Choosing to hold on.
Even when the past tried to tear you apart.
And that night—
As Alex carried Lyra carefully to her room—
The mansion finally felt like home again. ✦
