Chapter 19 — Strength Behind Fragility
Morning sunlight poured over the college campus, warm and bright, but the air buzzed with an unusual energy.
Students crowded the pathways.
Whispers moved between groups.
Something was happening today.
Care walked through the front gate quietly, bag slung over one shoulder, expression calm and unreadable.
Just another day.
Just another mask.
Across the courtyard, the group had already gathered.
Cole leaned against a pillar scrolling through his phone while Ben and Joong argued loudly about something stupid.
"I'm telling you," Joong insisted, "if it's another boring seminar I'm leaving."
"You say that every time," Daisy replied.
"And every time you stay."
Nova yawned.
Kevin adjusted his glasses.
Lyra and Ash stood slightly apart, talking softly.
Then Lyra noticed her.
Care.
Walking across the courtyard alone.
Exactly like yesterday.
Exactly like she had asked.
Lyra's voice quieted.
"She's here."
Ash followed her gaze.
Care walked past them.
No greeting.
No glance.
No sign that they had spent the entire night together just hours ago.
To everyone else on campus—
They were strangers.
Joong whispered under his breath,
"Wow. She's serious about that rule."
Ben muttered,
"She didn't even blink."
Cole didn't say anything.
He simply watched her disappear into the building.
And somehow…
It annoyed him.
Inside the Classroom
Students slowly filled their seats.
Conversations buzzed across the room.
Care sat in the same seat she always chose.
Back row.
Corner desk.
Alone.
Phone placed beside her notebook.
She quietly opened her book and began reading.
A few rows ahead, the group entered the classroom.
Joong spotted her immediately.
"Corner seat. Same place."
Nova nudged him.
"Don't stare."
"I'm not staring."
"You absolutely are."
Ben sighed and sat down.
Cole dropped into his chair beside him.
He glanced back once.
Care was already focused on her notes.
As if the world didn't exist.
Daisy leaned closer and whispered,
"She's really acting like she doesn't know us."
Cole replied quietly,
"She warned us."
Joong groaned.
"This is painful."
Kevin chuckled.
"Relax. It's temporary."
Before anyone could say more, the classroom door opened.
The professor entered.
Everyone quieted.
"Good morning."
"Good morning sir."
The professor placed his files on the desk.
"Before starting today's lecture, there is an important announcement."
Immediately the room filled with murmurs.
"Announcement?"
"What now?"
"Please don't say exams…"
The professor raised a hand.
"Everyone will report to the auditorium immediately."
More murmurs.
Joong whispered dramatically,
"Yeah we're doomed."
Ben elbowed him.
"Shut up."
Students began standing up and heading toward the auditorium.
Care quietly packed her notebook and joined the flow of students.
Still alone.
Still silent.
The group followed several steps behind.
Nova watched her.
"You know what's weird?"
"What?" Daisy asked.
"She looks more comfortable alone."
Cole crossed his arms.
"Or she's used to it."
The Auditorium
The large hall slowly filled with hundreds of students.
Rows and rows of seats.
Excited whispers echoed everywhere.
Care chose a seat near the side wall.
Far from everyone.
Far from the group.
Cole noticed.
"She really means it."
Ash nodded.
"Let her."
A few moments later the principal walked onto the stage.
Microphone in hand.
The entire auditorium fell silent.
"Good morning students."
"Good morning sir."
The principal smiled.
"As many of you know, our annual Sports Day is approaching."
Immediately half the hall groaned.
Joong slapped his forehead.
"I knew it."
The principal continued,
"This year participation will be compulsory for all students."
Now the groans became louder.
"No way!"
"Seriously?!"
"I'm not running anywhere!"
The principal raised his voice.
"Each student must register for at least one event."
Students complained loudly.
Some excited.
Most horrified.
Care simply sat quietly.
Expression neutral.
Then the principal added,
"After this meeting, all students will report to the sports ground for physical evaluation and record verification."
"Attendance will be marked."
Joong whispered,
"They're forcing us."
Nova smirked.
"Time to run."
Ben sighed.
"This is going to be chaos."
Care stood up before the announcement even finished.
And walked toward the exit.
The Sports Ground
The ground buzzed with activity.
Students lined up near tables where sports teachers were checking previous records and fitness levels.
Some stretched.
Some argued.
Some tried to escape.
Joong attempted exactly that.
"I think I forgot something in class."
Nova grabbed his collar.
"Sit down."
"Freedom is dead."
Care quietly joined one of the lines.
Clipboard in hand, the sports teacher checked names one by one.
"Next."
Student after student stepped forward.
Names.
Records.
Comments.
Then—
"Care."
She stepped forward calmly.
The sports teacher looked at the sheet.
His eyebrows lifted slightly.
"Oh."
He looked up at her.
"So you're Care."
Students nearby turned to look.
The teacher continued reading.
"State level athletics…"
"Multiple district medals…"
"Track records…"
Murmurs spread around the field.
"Wait what?"
"She's an athlete?"
"That quiet girl?"
The teacher looked genuinely impressed.
"These are remarkable achievements."
Care gave a small nod.
The teacher continued scanning the paper.
Then suddenly his expression changed.
His eyes paused on a note.
He looked up again.
"You have asthma."
Some students nearby immediately whispered.
"Asthma?"
"Then how is she running?"
The teacher sounded genuinely confused.
"You are medically recorded with asthma."
Care nodded calmly.
"Yes."
The teacher frowned.
"Then why are you participating in athletics?"
"Isn't it dangerous?"
Several students leaned closer to hear the answer.
Even the group had moved closer without realizing.
Cole crossed his arms.
He was curious now.
The teacher continued,
"With asthma most people avoid heavy physical activity."
"So why sports?"
Care looked at the ground for a brief moment.
Then she answered quietly.
"My lungs are weak."
Students listened carefully.
"That's exactly why I train."
The teacher blinked.
Care continued calmly.
"If lungs are weak… they need to become stronger."
"So I run."
The field became silent.
Even the wind seemed to pause.
Care's voice remained steady.
"If I stop… they will become weaker."
"So I don't stop."
Simple words.
But something about the way she said them carried quiet determination.
The teacher stared at her for a moment.
Then slowly nodded.
"I see."
He made a note on the sheet.
"Well."
"That explains the records."
He handed the clipboard back.
"You may choose your events."
Care nodded once.
"Thank you."
And stepped away.
Nearby
The group had heard everything.
Every word.
Joong was the first to speak.
"…Wait."
"She has asthma?"
Nova nodded slowly.
"That explains the attack in the library."
Ash frowned.
"She didn't have her inhaler that night."
Lyra looked worried.
"That must have been terrifying."
Ben shook his head.
"And she still runs."
Kevin muttered,
"That's insane determination."
Daisy whispered,
"She trains because she has weak lungs…"
Cole said nothing.
His eyes followed Care as she walked across the field.
Calm.
Quiet.
Strong.
Not showing even a hint of struggle.
And suddenly—
That night in the library flashed in his mind.
Care gasping for air.
Shivering.
Fragile.
For the first time he understood something.
The girl everyone called arrogant…
The girl who looked untouchable…
Was actually fighting something every single day.
Cole murmured quietly,
"Stubborn idiot."
But his voice carried something different now.
Not irritation.
Something closer to respect.
Across the field Care stood alone again.
Looking at the running track.
Wind moving softly through her hair.
Weak lungs.
Strong will.
And the group was finally beginning to understand—
The strength they had mistaken for arrogance.
