Chapter 131 - Chapter 131: Jiraiya: “Kid, You’ve Matured Early, Hehe…”

A few days passed quickly at Ryūgetsu Outpost, though for those stationed there, every hour carried the sharp edge of a drawn kunai. The stronghold had only recently survived Sunagakure's pressure, and the air still felt heavy with the aftermath of battle. Sand clung to rooftops, bloodstains remained in hidden corners, and the wounded groaned softly in the medical tents while patrols moved through the streets in rotating shifts. No one said it aloud, but everyone understood the same truth—Sunagakure had lost badly, and a wounded enemy was often more dangerous than a confident one.

The Konoha support troops led by Hizashi Hyūga gradually took over the defense of Ryūgetsu Outpost from Tsume Inuzuka's unit. Barrier points were repaired, patrol routes were redrawn, sentry posts were reinforced, and scouts were sent out in careful patterns to watch the surrounding desert. With the Byakugan supporting their reconnaissance, the outpost finally gained a steadier rhythm again. The tension did not disappear, but it became controlled, organized, and easier to breathe through.

The poisoned shinobi were also brought back from the edge of death. Thanks to the antidotes prepared by Tsunade and the treatment provided by Ren and Rin, the worst symptoms had been suppressed. Their faces were no longer blue, their breathing had stabilized, and the violent disruption in their chakra flow had eased. Now, they only needed rest, clean bandages, and time for their bodies to recover. On a battlefield, that already counted as a blessing.

Once Ryūgetsu Outpost was stable, Minato Namikaze prepared to return to Wildfire Outpost with Team Minato and their prisoner, Pakura of the Scorch Release. Before leaving, they exchanged farewells with Tsume, Hizashi, and the newly stationed Konoha shinobi. Tsume gave Obito one last warning not to brag too much about his Sharingan and swore she would throw him over the wall if he shouted about it again. Hizashi, meanwhile, gave Ren a calm nod, his pale eyes lingering for a moment as if silently promising that their sparring match would happen one day.

The journey back was tense from the beginning. Minato had warned everyone to remain alert. Sunagakure had suffered a crushing loss during the previous clash. Not only had they lost dozens of elite shinobi, but Pakura—one of their most valuable young combat assets—had been captured alive. That alone gave them every reason to launch a rescue attempt, and Chiyo was not the kind of enemy who would accept humiliation quietly.

So they moved carefully.

Kakashi watched the ridgelines. Rin kept close to the center of the group, ready to support Pakura's restraints or treat any sudden injury. Obito tried to look serious, but his newly awakened Sharingan kept flickering on and off whenever he became nervous. Ren walked slightly behind Minato, his senses stretched outward, searching for the slightest disturbance in the sand or wind. Even Pakura, shackled and sealed by Minato's Five Elements Seal, seemed to expect an attack. Her amber eyes kept shifting toward the dunes, though whether she hoped for rescue or feared being abandoned, no one could tell.

But the ambush never came.

No puppets rose from beneath the sand. No poison gas spread across the road. No Scorch Release signal flare burned in the distance. By the time the gates of Wildfire Outpost came into view, the group was still intact. The silence felt almost suspicious, but it also confirmed one thing—Chiyo's defeat had shaken Sunagakure badly enough that they did not dare make another move for now.

Wildfire Outpost was far busier than Ryūgetsu Outpost. Messengers hurried between buildings, supply carts moved through the streets, and injured shinobi from different battle zones were carried toward the medical area. The command post stood near the center of the stronghold, guarded by Konoha ninja whose eyes sharpened the moment they saw Minato's team returning with a bound Sunagakure prisoner.

Jiraiya already knew they were coming.

He stepped out of the command post personally, his white hair wild, his grin enormous, and his laughter so loud it felt capable of shaking dust from the roof beams. "Hahaha! Well done! Very well done, you brats of Team Minato!"

His voice drew attention immediately. Several nearby shinobi turned to look, and whispers began spreading as soon as they recognized Pakura. Jiraiya strode forward with pride written all over his face, then continued in a booming voice, "You pulled out the thorn that was Ryūgetsu Outpost, dealt a heavy blow to Sunagakure's elites, and even captured their Scorch Release genius alive. This military achievement is enough to make your names spread across the front lines. Minato, these really are fine students you've raised!"

Minato smiled modestly. "Teacher, you are exaggerating. They earned this through their own effort. I only guided them a little."

"You're still being humble in front of me?" Jiraiya laughed again, then slapped Ren on the shoulder with enough force to make an ordinary child stagger. Ren held firm, though the corner of his mouth twitched slightly. Jiraiya's gaze moved over Kakashi, Obito, and Rin as well, his expression filled with approval. "Good. Very good. Konoha's next generation is more reliable than I expected."

Jiraiya had always known Kakashi was talented. The son of the White Fang had carried expectations from the beginning, and his skill had never been in question. But Ren's growth was something even Jiraiya had not fully predicted. Capturing a Jonin-level enemy alive at such a young age was already shocking. Standing with Minato against Chiyo, even indirectly, made the achievement even more valuable. Properly spread through the ranks, this news could raise Konoha's morale while striking hard at Sunagakure's confidence.

Of course, the details would need to be handled carefully. Ren was still young, and too much fame too early could attract knives from every shadow. Jiraiya understood that better than most. Still, the victory itself could not be ignored.

His gaze finally landed on Pakura.

"So this is Sunagakure's Scorch Release genius?" Jiraiya said, his cheerful tone cooling slightly. "I've already notified Inoichi Yamanaka. He'll come later and see what valuable intelligence is hidden inside her head."

Pakura's eyes sharpened at once. Her hands were restrained, and Minato's seal still disrupted her chakra, but her pride remained unbroken. She glared at Jiraiya like she wanted to burn him where he stood.

Ren hesitated for a moment, then stepped forward. "Lord Jiraiya, may I make a small request?"

"Hm?" Jiraiya looked down at him.

"When Inoichi examines her memories, could you ask him to be as careful as possible?" Ren said. "Pakura possesses a bloodline limit. There may be a relationship between her chakra circulation and her brain or nervous system. She is also an important prisoner, so irreversible damage would be a waste."

Ren's words were completely practical. He wanted to study the secrets of Scorch Release through Pakura. Back at Ryūgetsu Outpost, he had already collected blood samples and small tissue samples under medical procedure, but the conditions there were too limited for deeper analysis. Wildfire Outpost had better medical equipment, and if Pakura's mind or chakra network was damaged during interrogation, the value of that research could drop sharply.

Unfortunately, those words entered Jiraiya's ears and took a very different path.

"Oh?" Jiraiya's brows lifted. He looked at Ren, then glanced at Pakura's striking face and proud, defiant posture. A teasing grin slowly spread across his mouth. "Research, is it? Hehehe… kid, you've matured early."

Ren stared at him.

Jiraiya leaned closer, lowering his voice in a way that was somehow even more embarrassing than if he had shouted. "I understand, I understand. She's fierce, beautiful, and has that dangerous enemy-ninja charm. You've got bold taste. But Konoha has rules for dealing with prisoners, especially important ones like her. If you want to 'research' anything, you'll have to do it properly and prove you have the ability first. Hahaha!"

A heavy silence followed.

Ren's forehead nearly filled with invisible question marks. No way. This old pervert had definitely misunderstood him.

Pakura's expression twisted with disgust. "Konoha's Sannin are all this shameless?"

Jiraiya instantly placed a hand over his heart. "Wounded by the enemy's words. How cruel."

Rin, standing to the side, seemed to realize what Jiraiya had implied. Her eyes moved subtly toward Kakashi's ninja pouch, where a certain orange-covered book was hidden. Then she looked back at Jiraiya with an expression that said she had suddenly understood where some people learned bad habits.

Kakashi silently turned his face away.

Minato coughed once, trying to rescue the situation before it became worse. "Teacher Jiraiya, Ren is speaking from a medical and research perspective."

"Yes, yes, of course," Jiraiya said, waving a hand with no sincerity at all. "Medical research. Very serious. Very proper. I completely understand."

Ren's expression became flat. "You absolutely do not."

Jiraiya laughed even louder, apparently pleased by the reaction. Then he finally waved them off. "Alright, alright. You brats must be exhausted. Your lodgings have already been arranged. Go rest. Minato, you stay behind."

"Yes, Teacher," Minato said.

Ren, Kakashi, Rin, and Obito bowed and began leaving the command post. Pakura was taken away by guards under Minato's instructions, still glaring coldly at Ren as if blaming him for every humiliating misunderstanding that had just occurred. On the way out, Obito immediately spotted a logistics ninja who looked vaguely familiar and brightened like a lantern.

"Hey! Mister! How did you know I awakened—"

Kakashi grabbed the back of his collar and dragged him away before he could finish.

Inside the command post, the laughter faded after the younger shinobi left. The atmosphere shifted almost instantly. Jiraiya's playful expression receded, replaced by the grave focus of a commander responsible for hundreds of lives. He turned toward Minato and folded his arms.

"Minato," he said, voice low. "What do you think about that child?"

Minato's eyes narrowed slightly. "Are you referring to Ren?"

"No." Jiraiya shook his head. "Uchiha Obito."

The name made the room feel quieter.

Jiraiya continued, "Awakening the Sharingan at his age is not unusually early, but awakening directly to two tomoe is rare, even in the Uchiha Clan. You know the position of the Uchiha in the village has always been delicate. A child like that will attract attention—from his clan, from the village, and possibly from enemies."

Minato's expression remained calm, but he did not treat the warning lightly. He knew exactly what Jiraiya meant. Power was never just power inside Konoha. The moment a shinobi showed unusual potential, invisible threads began to form around them—expectations, politics, fears, hopes, and plans made by adults far away from the battlefield.

"Teacher, I understand your concern," Minato said gently. "But Obito awakening his Sharingan is a good thing. It proves he has potential, and more importantly, it gives him confidence he badly needed. I will guide him properly, teach him to understand that power is not for pride, but for protecting comrades and the village."

Jiraiya watched him in silence.

Minato continued, "As for the Uchiha Clan, I will communicate carefully through Fugaku when necessary. Kushina can also help soften the connection between Obito and the rest of the village. Obito is simple, emotional, and loyal. If he receives trust and proper guidance, he will become Konoha's strength, not a danger to it."

Jiraiya let out a slow breath. "You really have thought it through."

"Obito is my student," Minato replied. "That is my responsibility."

For a moment, Jiraiya looked at him not as a teacher evaluating a student, but as an older shinobi seeing the shape of a future leader. Minato was still young. His name had not yet become the Yellow Flash that would terrify the entire shinobi world. But that steadiness, that instinct to protect and guide rather than control, was exactly why people naturally trusted him.

"Fine," Jiraiya said at last. "Since you have a plan, I won't interfere. If you need me to step in, say the word."

"I will."

Jiraiya's expression softened, and he placed a hand on Minato's shoulder. "Seriously, Minato, your students are excellent. Kakashi has talent, Obito may finally be stepping out of last place, Rin is steady, and Ren…" He paused, then gave a low chuckle. "That kid is something else. Raise them well. In the future, they may become the foundation you stand on."

Minato smiled, but his humility returned naturally. "Teacher, you overpraise me. They are excellent because they work hard. As for the future, it is still too early to discuss such things. Lady Tsunade and Orochimaru are far above me in strength, prestige, and contributions to the village. They are still seniors I must learn from."

Jiraiya did not argue immediately.

At this stage, Minato's record was impressive but not yet overwhelming. If the village one day discussed the position of Fourth Hokage, Tsunade and Orochimaru would be names impossible to avoid. Tsunade possessed unmatched medical achievements, legendary strength, and deep ties to Konoha's founding bloodline. Orochimaru had terrifying ability, countless accomplishments, and influence built through years of war. Jiraiya himself had no interest in the seat, but he understood politics well enough to know that merit alone did not decide everything.

Minato, however, was rising.

And the children around him were rising too.

The teacher and student continued discussing the war—Sunagakure's likely movements, Chiyo's next options, the value of Pakura as a prisoner, and whether the capture could be used to force the enemy into a defensive posture. Outside, Wildfire Outpost slowly sank into night, but the command post remained lit with maps, reports, and the quiet pressure of decisions that could decide who lived tomorrow.

Elsewhere, after returning to the camp, Ren finally thought he might get a moment of peace.

He was wrong.

Rin approached him quietly, her steps light enough that most shinobi would not have noticed. Ren, however, turned before she spoke. She hesitated, glancing around to make sure no one was close, then leaned slightly nearer.

"Ren," she said softly, "can I ask you something personal?"

Ren blinked. "Sure. What is it?"

Rin's fingers tightened around the strap of her medical pouch. Her expression was calm on the surface, but her eyes betrayed a strange mixture of curiosity, concern, and something she herself did not seem ready to name.

"You…" She paused, then lowered her voice even more. "You don't actually like that Sunagakure girl, do you?"

Ren froze.

For a moment, the battlefield, the war, Pakura's bloodline limit, Jiraiya's teasing grin, and every serious plan in his head all collapsed into one unbearable silence.

Not far away, Kakashi slowed his steps.

Obito, who had been about to brag to another passing shinobi, suddenly turned his head with terrifying interest.

And in that instant, Ren realized something far more dangerous than Chiyo's poison or Pakura's Scorch Release had appeared before him.

Rin had asked the one question that could turn the entire camp into a battlefield.
