The walk ended quietly.
Too quietly.
When they reached Lian Hua's apartment building, she stopped.
"We're here," she said softly.
Chen Kai gave a small nod.
"Good," he replied. "At least you got home safely."
Zhen Wei said nothing, his presence still steady beside her.
Lian Hua turned to both of them.
"Thank you… for walking me."
Chen Kai smiled faintly, but this time, it didn't quite reach his eyes.
"Of course," he said.
There was a pause.
Then he added,
"I'll go first."
Lian Hua looked at him, slightly surprised.
"Okay… goodnight, Chen Kai."
He nodded, then glanced briefly at Zhen Wei.
"Take care of her," he said quietly.
Zhen Wei met his gaze.
"I always do."
Chen Kai gave a small, almost defeated smile… then turned and walked away.
Lian Hua watched him go.
For the first time, she felt a small ache in her chest.
But before she could think too much about it—
"Lian Hua."
Zhen Wei's voice pulled her back.
She turned.
He was standing closer now.
Much closer.
The streetlight above them cast a soft glow, making everything feel strangely still.
"You're thinking about him," he said.
"A little," she admitted.
Zhen Wei's expression didn't change, but something in his eyes darkened.
"You shouldn't."
She looked up at him.
"Why?"
"Because he's not the one standing here with you."
Her heart skipped.
"That doesn't mean I can't care about him as a person," she said softly.
Zhen Wei stepped even closer.
"Careful," he said quietly.
"Why?"
"Because I don't like sharing your attention."
She sighed lightly.
"There you go again."
"Yes," he said.
"I don't hide it."
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
The night felt calm, but the tension between them was anything but.
Then Zhen Wei lifted his hand slowly, brushing his fingers lightly against her cheek.
Lian Hua froze.
Her breath caught.
"You're trembling," he murmured.
"I'm not," she whispered, though her voice betrayed her.
"You are."
His voice softened.
"But you're not stepping away."
Her heart pounded.
She didn't move.
Didn't speak.
Didn't stop him.
Zhen Wei's gaze dropped briefly to her lips… then back to her eyes.
"Tell me to stop," he said quietly.
Lian Hua's lips parted slightly.
But no words came out.
That silence was all the answer he needed.
Slowly, gently, he leaned in.
This time, nothing interrupted them.
No bell.
No voice.
No footsteps.
Just the quiet night.
And the space between them disappearing.
Their lips met.
Soft at first.
Careful.
As if both of them were testing something fragile.
But the moment stretched.
Deepened.
Lian Hua felt her heart race as a warmth spread through her chest, something unfamiliar yet impossible to resist.
Zhen Wei's hand moved slightly, steady but gentle, as if grounding her in the moment.
When they finally pulled apart, the world felt different.
Quieter.
Closer.
More real.
Lian Hua looked up at him, her cheeks flushed.
"Zhen Wei…" she whispered.
His gaze was softer than she had ever seen it.
"There's no going back now," he said quietly.
And she knew he was right.
Because something between them had finally changed.
Irreversibly.
