Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Shadows of War

The morning sun rose slowly over the quiet village of Rivermoor, painting the fields in golden light. Farmers were already working, and the sound of animals filled the air.

But something felt different that day.

Ethan stood near the wooden fence beside his house, staring toward the distant hills. His father, Thomas Hale, was sharpening his farming tools nearby.

"Why are you looking at the hills like that?" Thomas asked.

Ethan hesitated.

"I don't know… It feels like something is coming."

Before his father could answer, a loud distant boom echoed across the valley.

Both of them froze.

Another explosion followed.

Villagers began shouting in panic as birds scattered into the sky.

"What was that?" Ethan asked, fear creeping into his voice.

Thomas looked toward the hills with a dark expression.

"War," he said quietly.

At the same moment, across the village, Isla Whitmore was helping her mother Elena hang freshly washed clothes outside their small house.

Suddenly the ground trembled slightly.

Elena stopped and looked toward the horizon.

Dark smoke was rising in the distance.

"Inside, Isla," her mother said quickly.

"But why?" Isla asked nervously.

"Just go."

Before Isla could move, soldiers suddenly appeared at the entrance of the village road.

They were not the kingdom's soldiers.

Their uniforms were unfamiliar.

And their faces were hard and cold.

Within minutes, chaos erupted.

People ran in every direction.

Horses screamed.

Houses began to burn.

Ethan ran through the village, searching desperately.

"Isla!" he shouted.

But the noise of gunfire and screaming swallowed his voice.

He turned a corner and saw something that froze his blood.

Two soldiers were dragging Isla away while she struggled and cried.

"Let me go!" she shouted.

Ethan's heart pounded.

"ISLA!"

He ran toward them, but suddenly a strong hand grabbed his shoulder.

It was his older brother Daniel.

"You can't!" Daniel yelled.

"They'll kill you!"

"But they're taking her!" Ethan cried.

Daniel pulled him back as more soldiers rode through the street.

One of them shouted orders in a harsh language.

The wagon carrying captured villagers began moving.

Isla's frightened eyes searched the crowd.

For a brief moment, she saw Ethan.

"Ethan!" she cried.

Their eyes met.

And then the wagon rolled away.

Ethan struggled against Daniel's grip.

"No! We have to go after them!"

Daniel shook his head.

"There are too many soldiers."

Ethan watched helplessly as the wagon disappeared beyond the burning houses.

His fists trembled.

Tears filled his eyes.

"I'll find her," he whispered.

"No matter where they take her… I will find her."

Above the village, dark smoke filled the sky.

And far away, the road carried Isla toward a future she could not yet imagine.

But fate had already begun its cruel game.

And this was only the beginning.
