Chapter 20 - Chapter 28: The Choice That Bleeds

The mountain did not roar.

It listened.

Kael stood between two silences—

one behind him, whispering in fragments…

and one before him, watching in stillness.

The shadow did not advance again.

It waited.

And that—more than anything—felt wrong.

"You don't want me to choose," Kael said quietly.

No answer.

But the cracks in the throne deepened.

A thin line became a fracture.

A fracture became a wound.

Darkness seeped from it—

not spilling, not flowing—

but breathing.

Slow.

Measured.

Alive.

"You've been guiding me," Kael continued, his voice steadier now despite the tremor in his hands.

"The visions… the circlet… the voices."

A step closer.

Not toward the throne.

Toward truth.

"You didn't bring me here to take the throne."

The shadow flickered again—longer this time.

Unstable.

"You brought me here… to see if I would."

Silence answered him.

But this silence was different.

It wasn't control.

It was uncertainty.

Outside—

The Crownblade slammed her weapon into the barrier again.

This time—

It cracked.

Just a hairline.

But she felt it.

Her eyes widened.

"It's weakening," she breathed.

"No," one of the riders said, voice tight with unease.

He pointed toward the mountain.

"It's… deciding."

Inside—

Kael's chest tightened as the circlet pulsed again.

Not forcing.

Not commanding.

Waiting.

Another memory surged—

—but this time, it didn't take him.

It offered itself.

A throne of black iron.

A crown placed willingly.

Not stolen.

Not forced.

Chosen.

Power without chains.

Rule without question.

No fear.

No doubt.

No weakness.

Kael's hand trembled.

Just for a moment—

He wanted it.

Not the darkness.

Not the destruction.

But the certainty.

The end of doubt.

The end of pain.

The end of being… broken.

"You feel it," the shadow said softly now.

Not commanding.

Not ancient.

Almost…

gentle.

"It would end the war inside you."

Kael closed his eyes.

For a heartbeat—

He let himself imagine it.

Silence in his mind.

Strength in his bones.

No fear of failing.

No fear of becoming something he hated—

Because he would choose it.

His fingers curled.

Then—

He laughed.

Rough.

Broken.

Real.

"That's the lie, isn't it?"

The shadow stilled.

Kael opened his eyes.

Clear now.

Sharp.

"If I choose that… there's nothing left of me to regret it."

A step forward.

Closer than before.

Close enough that the darkness recoiled—more visibly this time.

"You don't remove the war," Kael said.

"You remove me."

The mountain trembled again.

Stronger now.

The cracks in the throne spread like veins.

Light—

faint—

but real—

began to bleed through them.

For the first time—

The shadow stepped back.

A full step.

Unmistakable.

Kael saw it.

And this time—

He didn't hesitate.

He turned.

Not toward the shadow.

Not toward the past.

But toward the throne.

Broken.

Cracking.

No longer absolute.

"If I ever sit there," he said quietly,

"it won't be because I became you."

His hand rose—

not to claim—

but to break.

The circlet burned.

Violent.

Resisting.

Fighting him.

The whispers screamed—

not unified anymore—

but desperate.

Splintering.

Contradicting.

Falling apart.

"You cannot—" the shadow began—

But Kael didn't listen.

His hand touched the throne.

And everything—

stopped.

No sound.

No movement.

No breath.

Then—

A single choice—

Not of power.

Not of destiny.

But of identity.

And Kael…

pushed.

The crack shattered.

Outside—

The barrier exploded outward in a wave of black glass and dying light.

The Crownblade was thrown back—

but this time—

she smiled.

Inside—

The throne broke.

Not shattered completely—

But enough.

Enough to make it mortal.

The shadow screamed.

Not in rage.

Not in fury.

But in something far more dangerous—

loss.

And deep beneath Veyr—

That ancient presence stirred again.

Stronger now.

Closer.

Awake enough to feel—

That something had changed.

Not the rise of a king.

Not yet.

But the birth of something far more unpredictable—

A ruler…

who could refuse the throne.
