Chapter 6 - The Hawke

--in the shop--

I looked away from one second before hearing Tim yell.

"Look out!"

Then I was weightless as the shop rolled then skidded to a stop in the middle an intersection upside down.

"That work out the way you planned it, Boot?" Tim asked Lucy who was driving.

I then groaned out. "No, No don't worry I am fine back here." As i unbuckled falling onto the roof. I laid there waiting for one of them to call it in while I contemplated my life choices of becoming a cop only getting out when Tim opened the door only to sit down on the side walk waiting for fire and rescue to get here.

--Mid-Wilshire Station--

I was sitting in the front when Nolan and Bishop walked into the room talking about one of the instructors from the Academy.

I stood up and walked back to them as they talked about him.

"Tim rode with Hawke back in the day."

"Damn straight. Craziest six months of my life."

"Hmm. Nolan hung out with him last night."

"Hawke and Nolan?"

"Oh, yeah. They were tight at the Academy. I didn't like him because he only stared at mine and Lucy's boobs when he talked to us. such an ass." I said when I got close to them.

"Yeah, They bonded over their shared love of old stuff." Lucy said

"The Beastie Boys isn't old."

"They formed before I was born."

Before we could continue Grey walked into the briefing room. I walked over to my seat and sat down right when Grey started talking.

"All right, everyone take a seat. Got some catching up to do. Let's go. First, let's congratulate Officer Chen for allowing her T.O. to finish his coffee before rolling their vehicle." saying as we walked over to her before bending down slightly, getting laughs and applause. "I see "training" is working out for you. All right, more pressingly, midnight shift was flooded with calls last night, and they left us with their mess. Let's get started. Our detectives are working a homicide in Larchmont Village, but there are witnesses that still need to be interviewed. Bishop and Nolan, you'll take that. And Burglary has got a search warrant that Patrol didn't get around to. Bradford and Chen, you'll take that."

"Come on, why can't Burglary serve their own damn warrants?"

"Because they don't have the vim and vigor you have, Officer Bradford. This is yours." Grey responded to Tim before looking back at the other officers in the room. "All the faces. Don't worry. I have pending calls for everybody! Officer Alverez ride with Officers Bradford and Chen again, and please don't flip a shop either to show her up. All right, let's go knock 'em out and show the late shift how real police work is done."

Meeting up with Lucy and Tim before we make our way to the Kit room to get body cams and the warbags. We get to the shop and Tim tell me to drive while he punishes Lucy with the back seat after a short minute we pull out.

We get to the apartment building as Tim starts questioning us as wee walked to the apartment we are supposed to search

"All right, we're serving a search warrant. You see door hinges?" He asks while looking at Lucy.

"Uh, the door opens outwards towards us."

After she answered he looked over at me. "And what's a "fatal funnel"?"

"The first three feet in any doorway." I said back before he looked a little pleased.

"Not bad. Here's the real test. Of all the things Burglary told us about our suspect.. LeShawn Halvorsen, what's most important?" Time said while flipping through his notepad.

"Uh, history of fighting with police." Lucy guested.

"Wrong." Tim said while shaking his head.

"This guy's been served seven search warrants, spent half his life on parole." I then guested

"Correct."

"Uh, I'm sorry. I'm not sure I follow."

"He's been searched a lot. He knows what doesn't work, so to find his stash, you'll have to think like a crook. Can you two do that?"

"Of course. You don't think I can?"

"I think you were raised to analyze bad guys, not be one, and to be a great cop, you got to have a little outlaw in you."

"Maybe I can I had to hid some contraband when we would bring it into base like movies and sometimes beer." I spoke up with some thought in my voice.

Lucy looked over at me with a little disappointment. "What. You can ask almost any retired person and they would almost always say something along the same lines." I defended my self from her disapproving look.

"Hinges?" Tim cut in as we got closer to the door.

"On the inside." Lucy said

Before Tim knocked he drew his weapon. "Police. Open up, LeShawn."

"What's an acceptable amount of time to wait before we bust in?" Lucy asked as we waited with guns drawn in the hallway.

But before she could ask again Tim stepped up and then kicked the door it stopped halfway like it hit something then we heard a body hit the ground. As we make entre into the room we see LeShawn down on the floor groan clearly hit by the door Tim kicked in.

Lucy and I holstered and flipped him over as we cuffed him Tim spoke up.

"That had to hurt." After we had the cuffs on he holstered his weapon then we sat him down on the couch.

Tim then gathered the two of us in the middle of the living room before letting us loose to search the place. As Lucy was bent over in front of the man looking around one side of the couch Halvorsen was checking her out before speaking.

"Yo, lady cops, you two can search my place all day."

"Sorry man don't swing that way." I spoke up as I continued to search the other side of the living room when I heard Tim slap the mans head.

"Get up. Face the wall before I snatch the other eye out of your head. You need to learn some respect. Okay, come on, Officer Chen. Think like a crook. When's the last time you hid anything under a couch, 8th grade?"

"You know how many times I couldn't find my phone and it was under the couch the whole time?" Lucy snarked back.

Tim clearly not impressed. "This isn't that. You ever heard of the DEAR method? D-E-A-R?"

"No."

"There are four principles of concealment. First is deception, "D." Deception shows you one thing when it's really something else."Tim explains while walking over to the fridge and picking up a soda can before unscrewing the top opening it up.

" "E" is for "elusive." What appears to be nothing is actually something." He then reaches a vent moving the cover pulling out a tin showing us.

""A" for "access." Things hard to get to, high places, low places." Then he looks up at a light fixture before taking the glass cover off and finding a wad of cash he then throws at Lucy.

"Which brings us to "R." "R" is for "repulsive." Toilets, garbage, porn collection, anything that makes you want to puke makes a crook want to hide things there."

"You've got to be kidding me." I said groaning.

"Might want to glove up. Saw a box of sex toys in the master bedroom, and don't forget the toilet. Search before you flush."

"Wait. Uh, why do we have to be "R"? I don't I don't want to be "R." I could be "elusive" or "deceptive" or something." Lucy complained to Tim while he shrugged at us.

We make it to the master bed room before Lucy looks at me. "Please I don't want to check them can you do it if you do I'll do it next time" She begged me.

Looking at her for a minute before responding. "Sure for searching the sex toy collection you will need to do the next search, but for me to do both the sex toy collection and the shit pile in the toilet you will.. Let me think." After a minute of contemplating I look back at her. "You will clean my house for the rest of this week." I nodded after deciding that was the price.

Looking shocked. "What you would only cover one if I got the next one." I nodded before she continued "But if you do both all I have to do is clean your house?" I once again nodded.

"Fine done I'll clean your house." I nodded before pulling out some Petroleum Jelly and started digging though his stuff while Lucy looked though his room. After a dead end I moved to the toilet looking down and regretting this before continuing my search.

After 20 30 minutes of search we walked back out to the living room we see Tim sitting down with a bunch of jewelry laid out on the table.

"You have got to be kidding me."

"What?" Tim questioned

"I've been back there for 20 minutes digging through Caligula's toy chest, and you've had this the whole time?" I stomped while taking the gloves off before turning to Lucy.

"2 week the rest of this week and next week." She looked over at me like I offended her.

"Well, not the whole time. It took me three or four minutes." Tim said smugly to us.

"You find anything?" He asked us.

I looked at Halvorsen disgusted "Uh, yeah. Horrid, filthy things. I think some of them were recent and un washed" I said while holding back my lunch. I walk away from Tim looking for a foot rest to use to sit and process what I saw.

We finished with the search arrested the man and took him back to the station for processing before leaving after we had gotten close to the next pending call we had assigned to us Grey called Tim directly having him put it on speaker.

"We have a situation, Jeremy Hawke, ran from Nolan and Bishop when the Captain wanted to talk to him when to discuss a 911 call we got about him be on the look out for him the detectives just got a arrest warrant submitted before I called be careful." Grey finished.

We looked at each other when Tim responded. "Yes, sir we will."

After the call ended the shop got silent after awhile dispatch radioed us.

"7-Adam-19, the phone ping puts the phone 10 yards from your current location."

After hearing that Tim pulled over and we all got out while Lucy called it in.

" 7-Adam-19, show us Code 6 at Riverside and Woodman. No sign of suspect Hawke's vehicle. Check Utah plate 6-Mary-Ocean-1-7-Adam."

"I can't believe we're hunting Jeremy Hawke. Man bleeds LAPD. I was first on scene when the guy was taking .223 rounds using the curb for cover."

When we got next to the van Lucy and I drew our weapons while Tim started to call out to Hawke "Hawke? It's Tim. We're gonna get to the bottom of this. Come out. Let's talk." but before we got to the open door a man that was clearly not Hawke stepped out before raising his hands see the weapons Lucy and I had draw.

"Hey. Sorry. No Hawke here. We met back at the motel, though. Did he do something wrong?"

"Was he ever inside your vehicle?" Tim asked

"Nope."

We started to walk the exterior of the van checking the wheel wells when we met at the front of the van Tim had the hood open with a phone in his hand. "He really is running. He knew we'd track his cell, so he planted it on someone going anywhere he's not."

"He's thinking like a criminal."

"Worse, like a criminal cop. He knows how we do things and what we expect, so he's always a step ahead."

Tim stepped away calling dispatch saying that Hawke dumped his phone as we walked back to the shop getting in and driving away.

As we continued our patrol we hear Bishop and Nolan start a pursuit with him. Tim stepped on it after we heard where they were.

After a couple of minutes driving in the direction of the pursuit. Tim grabbed the radio.

"7-Adam-19, we are on intercept course with Hawke's truck, three blocks out and closing."

"Is this safe with Hawke's kid in the car?" Lucy asked Tim as we sped to intercept Hawke.

"Hawke thinks we've fallen back into tracking mode. He doesn't know we blocked the streets, turned the lights green to funnel him towards us. He won't see the roadblock coming. To him, it looks like we've fallen back."

"Yeah, but won't all the green lights look suspicious?" I asked him.

"He won't notice. "What appears to be nothing," remember?"

"You're DEAR method incarnate. You've got a tactic for any situation, don't you?"

"Maybe."

"What if you get robbed at gunpoint?" Lucy started to question him.

"Easy, deception. I carry an empty wallet. If I ever got robbed, I'd drop my fake, pull my piece, and good night, nurse."

"So, where do you keep your cards and money?"

"Money clip behind my belt."

"Okay, you're officially weird."

"Get ready. It's going down." Tim said as we were one street from pursuit "7-Adam-19, about to intercept. Make sure you block him in."

"7-Adam-15, copy. He just did a hard left turn. It's like he knows what we're gonna do."

"The SOB must still have his radio." Tim said as he threw down the

We joined up with the pursuit as we drove after him Nolan started to talk to him over the radio trying to get him to stop. After a short exchange we heard Logan Hawkes son speak on the radio saying that he was with it to the end with his dad and how we were the bad guys. After another exchange Hawke took radio and stopped responded to anyone and started to drive faster.

After a minute Tim called Bishop and we started to discuss what we would think he would do.

When I heard them talk about big areas with crowds and covered parking and loosing air support I spoke realizing where we were heading.

"Guys if we continue in this direction we will hit the mall it has covered parking and as of right now it will have a ton of people in it." Tim looked back at me then pulled out his radio.

"Suspect headed for the Fair Street Mall. Need additional units. Code 3."

As we were driving after him Hawke cuts off a car causing it to swerve and block us while he drove away making a turn into the mall parking lot.

When we got there we found his Truck with its doors open. We started searching the inside of the mall after several tense minutes of searching we heard Nolan yell out Hawkes name looking at Lucy and Tim we took off in that direction by the time we got to the area we saw Nolan talking to Hawke through a security gate and Bishop running back to Nolan. We followed with me by the time that we got there Bishop had the fence half way up and Hawke started to move to the staff door at the back. With out stopping or slowing down I dropped sliding under the gate and chased after Hawke I had just caught the door running after him.

"Hawke Stop!!" I yelled out as I started to approach him he swung a left disappearing into a maze of hallways and by the time I got to the split he disappeared with me loosing sight of him. I pull out my radio announcing that I lost sight of Hawke at one of the Hallway intersections in the backroom. After looking around I find the closest door to an open store and exit to meet back up with Tim and the others.

When I get to them I hear dispatch over the radio.

"All units, be advised, man with a gun at Lowington Financial. Code 3."

"That's six blocks from here." Bradford said after listening.

"Description of the gunman?" Grey asked to get more info on the call.

"No, sir. 911 call cut off before we could get more information."

"That's how I'd do it. Call in a false report. Pulls manpower away, divides our resources, it frees up an exit. That call's not real. That's Hawke." Nolan said to Grey and Tim while pointing at his radio.

"And if it's not? If the call's real and we don't divert units over immediately, what happens then?" Grey asked questioning Nolan.

"Where I lost Hawke there was a loading bay that open and has objects blocking most line of sight for us to have those officers respond and while we set up and hid waiting for him." I said pausing them Grey looked at me and then Tim then nodded before walking away making some calls.

--Back of mall--

"7-Adam-14, 7-Adam-25, respond to active shooter at Lowington Financial." Dispatch called out pulling the two cars we had outside the loading bay.

I waited on top of the box trucks in waiting for Nolan and Tim to start the plan which after the cars left I didn't have to wait long. I heard Tim start it.

"It's over, Hawke."

"Unh-unh."

"You know the drill. Slide the gun over here. Get on the ground." Then I heard Nolan I slowly started to stand as to not make noise and alert Hawke

"That's not gonna happen. You already made a mistake. There's no clear line of fire in here. You want to shoot me? You could shoot him, but I'll tell you something. That - Ah, ah, ah. That doesn't concern me." Hawke said

As I finished standing up I caught the rest of Tim's and Hawke's conversation. "Oh! Oh, this this is this is gonna be good. Huh? Oh, this is gonna be good, gentlemen. Not really a fair fight, but it's gonna be good because I trained both of you, one in the field, one in the classroom, and I know your strengths, and I know your weaknesses." As he lays the gun on the ground I pull my taser and before Tim and Nolan can move to start a fight I call out. "Hey!" Causing Hawke to back into the other truck and look at me then I deploy my taser hitting him in the chest causing him to go down.

Tim looks up at me." That's cheating you stopped the fun."

"No, I stopped you from doing something stupid and getting gut punched." I shot back and climbed down as Nolan handcuffed Hawke. I patted Tim on the back as I pasted lifting his money clip flashing Lucy before walking to meeting up at the shop and leaving.

--Mid-Wilshire station--

After changing and getting ready to leave Lucy and I walk out of the of station to our cars, but Lucy called Tim.

"Never tell a crook where you hide your money."

"Lucy?"

I grabbed the phone from her and put it on speaker. "I wonder how your going to pay for your bill when you have no money?"

"You are in so much trouble."

"Uh-huh. You know what? Maybe you could wash the dishes. But you might want to glove up. Good night."

We laughed before splitting up and heading home.
