Chapter 170 - Chapter 170: Victory or Defeat

Hakuryu High School had barely changed pitchers when Yakushi immediately responded with a hit.

The already dangerous situation had become even more critical.

Among the remaining pitchers on the roster, Uemura was the most reliable option available. No matter what happened, Coach Sasaki could not afford to replace him again.

The game was gradually slipping beyond Hakuryu's control.

If they wanted to survive this inning, they would have to take a gamble.

A big one.

Akiba Kazuma was far more dangerous than the third-years who had batted before him.

Not only was his contact ability exceptional, but his power was among the best on the team.

At the same time, Hakuryu had to guard against a possible squeeze bunt or sacrifice play.

Every possibility had to be considered.

After carefully weighing the risks and benefits, Coach Sasaki finally relaxed his furrowed brow.

A decisive glint flashed through his eyes.

He had made his choice.

Taking a deep breath, he called over a messenger and firmly relayed his instructions.

After a brief discussion on the field, Hakuryu's players returned to their positions.

The infield moved forward aggressively.

Every infielder focused entirely on Akiba Kazuma.

The outfielders, however, maintained a more standard alignment, prepared to react to any ball that reached the gaps.

The atmosphere throughout the stadium became incredibly tense.

Perhaps inspired by Coach Sasaki's confidence, Uemura seemed to regain his composure.

The nervousness from earlier vanished.

His eyes burned with determination.

He stared directly at Akiba Kazuma.

Without blinking.

Without retreating.

Clutching the baseball tightly in both hands, Uemura took a deep breath.

Then he drove forward and unleashed the pitch.

"SWOOSH!"

The baseball shot toward home plate.

Compared to his previous pitches, both the velocity and command had improved noticeably.

The speed approached 140 km/h.

The location was much closer to the strike zone.

Akiba didn't swing immediately.

Instead, he calmly tracked the pitch.

Only when it entered his hitting zone did he unleash his swing.

CLANG!

The ball exploded off the bat.

Unfortunately for Yakushi, it hooked foul past first base.

Akiba casually held the bat in one hand.

The impact had left a slight numbness in his palms.

A smile slowly appeared on his face.

"This pitch isn't bad."

"But compared to that monster..."

His thoughts drifted briefly toward Kitamura Kou.

Compared to Kou's terrifying fastball and overwhelming presence, this pitch was on a completely different level.

The comparison almost made him laugh.

Shaking away the distracting thought, Akiba quickly refocused.

This at-bat could decide the game.

On the mound, Uemura felt his confidence growing.

His first pitch had successfully challenged one of Yakushi's strongest batters.

Without hesitation, he delivered another fastball.

"SWOOSH!"

The pitch came in with nearly identical speed and power.

This time, Akiba looked even calmer.

His eyes remained locked onto the baseball.

"Hakuryu High School..."

He tightened his grip on the bat.

"Let me end this game right here."

The pitch entered his zone.

Akiba exploded into action.

CLANG!

Perfect contact.

The sweet spot met the baseball squarely.

WHOOSH!

The ball shot into the field like a guided missile.

It landed perfectly in the gap between the drawn-in infield and the charging outfielders.

Hakuryu's airtight defense had finally been pierced.

The moment Uemura began his pitching motion, Fukuda Daiki had already broken toward home.

Like an arrow released from a bowstring, he sprinted with everything he had.

By the time the ball landed, he was already crossing the plate.

"Tied game!"

But Fukuda didn't stop to celebrate.

He immediately cleared the area around home plate.

Because he knew someone else was right behind him.

Yamauchi Yutaka.

Without slowing down, Yamauchi rounded third base.

His eyes contained only one target.

Home plate.

Victory.

Meanwhile, Honda, the left fielder, finally cut off the baseball before it could roll deeper into the outfield.

Without hesitation, he scooped it up and fired a perfect throw toward home plate.

Ito was already waiting.

"Go, Yamauchi-senpai!"

"Stop him, Ito!"

Both dugouts erupted.

The players screamed themselves hoarse.

The tension reached its peak.

Hakuryu's players were especially nervous.

Their palms were soaked with sweat.

This single play would determine everything.

Their summer.

Their dream.

Their future.

The spectators watched in complete silence.

No one dared blink.

No one wanted to miss what came next.

Yamauchi charged toward home plate.

Closer.

Closer.

Closer.

His expression hardened.

The entire world seemed to shrink until only home plate remained.

Then—

He dove.

SMACK!

THUD!

His body crashed into the dirt.

At the same instant, he stretched his right arm forward with every ounce of strength he had left.

His fingertips brushed against home plate.

At almost the exact same moment—

Ito's glove slammed against Yamauchi's body.

The stadium froze.

Everyone held their breath.

Waiting.

Praying.

Hoping.

The home plate umpire stepped forward.

Then, without hesitation, he spread both arms wide.

"SAFE!"

"SAFE!"

The stadium exploded.

The game was over.

After nearly three hours of fierce battle...

Yakushi High School had completed an unbelievable comeback.

The third-years had refused to let their summer end.

The underdogs had survived.

And with that single call, the curtain finally fell on one of the most dramatic games of the tournament.
