Chapter 4 - Clarissa's Decision

The headlines had reached Hollywood before breakfast. Clarissa Vale stared at the phone screen in her dressing room as the words repeated themselves across every entertainment and financial feed. BLUE OCEAN FOUNDER ETHAN COLE REMOVED AS CEO. She had read the article three times already. The story was spreading everywhere—business networks, entertainment blogs, even celebrity gossip sites.

In Los Angeles, the worlds of finance and film overlapped more than people realized. Blue Ocean Pictures financed half the projects circulating through the studios, and Ethan's name was well known across Hollywood. Which meant the scandal had arrived here quickly. Too quickly.

The door of the dressing room opened without warning. "Clarissa, have you seen the news?" Her agent, Megan Ross, stepped inside carrying a tablet. Megan was usually calm, even during the chaos of production schedules, but this morning her expression carried visible tension. "Yes," Clarissa said quietly. "I've seen it." Megan closed the door behind her. "This is serious."

Clarissa placed the phone down on the vanity table. The large mirror reflected the soft lights of the studio makeup room and the careful calm on her face. "Ethan was removed from Blue Ocean," Megan continued. "That's not a small story." "I know." "It's everywhere." Clarissa nodded slightly.

Across the room the television mounted on the wall was still playing an entertainment news broadcast. Even they were discussing it. "…sources say the relationship between actress Clarissa Vale and former Blue Ocean CEO Ethan Cole may have contributed to the tension between Cole and the board…" Clarissa reached for the remote and muted the screen. Megan exhaled. "You see what I mean." Clarissa didn't respond.

Her career had taken years to build. Independent films at first. Supporting roles. Then the breakthrough performance that had brought her recognition across the industry. Now she was one of Hollywood's rising stars. But Hollywood had rules. And one of the most important was simple. Stay away from controversy. Megan leaned against the table. "The studios are watching this very closely." Clarissa finally looked at her. "Why?" "Because scandals spread fast here," Megan replied. "And right now your name is being mentioned in every article about Ethan." Clarissa folded her arms. "That's not my fault."

"No," Megan said gently. "But perception matters." The words hung in the air. Clarissa had heard this conversation before. Many times. Actors were brands. Their public image could determine whether studios invested millions in a project or quietly replaced them with someone safer. And right now Ethan's situation had created uncertainty. Megan spoke again. "Several producers have already called me this morning." "What did they say?" "They're… concerned." Clarissa laughed softly. "Concerned about what?" "That you're connected to someone in the middle of a corporate scandal." Clarissa turned away from the mirror and walked toward the window overlooking the studio lot.

Outside, technicians were already setting up equipment for the day's filming. Cameras, lighting rigs, production assistants moving quickly between trailers. The industry was moving forward. As it always did. Behind her, Megan hesitated before speaking again. "There's something else." Clarissa turned slightly. "What?" "Some people think it might be better if you create a little distance from Ethan right now." Clarissa looked at her carefully. "Distance?" "Just temporarily," Megan said quickly. "Until the situation stabilizes." Clarissa studied her agent for a long moment. "You mean abandon him." "That's not what I said." "It's exactly what you said." Megan sighed. "Clarissa, listen to me. Hollywood is ruthless. The moment the industry thinks you're connected to instability; they start protecting themselves."

Clarissa walked back toward the table. "So, the solution is to disappear until it's safe again?" "No," Megan said. "The solution is to protect your career." Clarissa didn't answer immediately. Instead, she picked up her phone again and scrolled through the headlines. Article after article repeated the same narrative. ETHAN COLE'S AGGRESSIVE STRATEGY BACKFIRES- BLUE OCEAN BOARD RESTORES STABILITY-INSIDERS QUESTION COLE'S LEADERSHIP.

Clarissa understood what was happening. Victor Langford had taken control of the story. And the industry had accepted it without hesitation. Megan spoke again. "I'm not saying you have to break up with him." "But?" "But it might help if you stay quiet about the relationship for a while." Clarissa smiled faintly. "That sounds very diplomatic." "It's realistic." Before Clarissa could respond, the dressing room door opened again.

Two actresses from the film set stepped inside. They had clearly been waiting nearby. "Clarissa, is it true?" one of them asked. "You mean the news about Ethan?" Clarissa replied. They nodded. "We saw the headlines." The second actress spoke carefully. "That must be… difficult." Clarissa held their gaze calmly. "It's complicated." They exchanged a brief glance. Then one of them said what everyone else had been thinking. "You should probably distance yourself from that situation." Clarissa raised an eyebrow. "Why?" "Because Hollywood doesn't like scandals." "And this one looks big." The room grew quiet. Clarissa understood what they were trying to say. Protect yourself. Step away. Move on. It was the same advice Megan had given. The same advice every publicist and studio executive would give.

Clarissa walked slowly back toward the mirror. She looked at her reflection for a moment. Then she picked up her phone again. Ethan's name appeared at the top of her contact list. Megan watched her carefully. "What are you doing?" Clarissa tapped the screen. "I'm calling him."

The phone rang twice before Ethan answered. "Hello." His voice sounded calm. Too calm. "Are you alright?" she asked. "I'm fine." "I'm coming over." "You don't have to." "I know." There was a brief silence. Then Ethan asked quietly, "Are you sure?" Clarissa glanced around the room. At Megan. At the actresses. At the silent television still displaying the news. "Yes," she said firmly. "You've seen the headlines?" "Yes." "You understand what this could do to your career?" Clarissa smiled slightly. "Hollywood has survived worse things than loyalty." Ethan didn't speak for a moment. Clarissa continued. "Everyone here is telling me to walk away." "And?" She picked up her coat from the chair beside the table. "And I'm ignoring them." Megan shook her head slowly but didn't try to stop her.

Clarissa walked toward the door. "Clarissa," Ethan said quietly through the phone. "Yes?" "You don't owe me this." She paused before opening the door. "I know." Then she said the words that would define everything that came next. "I'm staying, Ethan." Another brief silence followed. "No matter what happens." She ended the call.

The room behind her remained quiet. Megan watched her for a moment before speaking. "You're sure about this?" Clarissa smiled calmly. "Yes." Then she stepped out into the bright Los Angeles morning. And for the first time since the scandal began, Ethan Cole was no longer standing alone.
