Chapter 18 - Claimed In Fire

The mansion didn't feel the same anymore.

Not after today.

Not after the restaurant.

Not after Isabella's words.

Sophia paced her room, her mind restless, her chest tight with thoughts she couldn't silence.

You're not safe with him.

Her steps slowed.

She hated how that sentence lingered.

Hated how part of her believed it.

But another part—

A dangerous, confusing part—

Believed something else.

That she wasn't safe without him either.

A knock came at the door.

She froze.

"Come in," she said cautiously.

One of the guards stepped in.

"Mr. Marino wants you downstairs."

Her pulse quickened.

"Why?"

"He didn't say."

Of course he didn't.

Sophia exhaled slowly, steadying herself before following.

The atmosphere downstairs felt… off.

Different from usual.

More guards.

More tension.

Like something was about to happen.

Sophia's heart started racing again.

She walked into the main hall—

And stopped.

Luciano stood at the center.

Calm.

Controlled.

But his presence felt heavier than usual.

Darker.

And in front of him—

A man.

Tall.

Well-dressed.

But restrained.

Two guards holding him in place.

Sophia's stomach dropped.

"What's going on?" she asked, her voice quieter now.

Luciano's gaze shifted to her instantly.

Softened.

Just slightly.

"Come here," he said.

A command.

But not harsh.

Sophia hesitated.

Then walked toward him slowly.

Her eyes flicked back to the man.

Something about the way he was looking at her—

It made her uneasy.

No.

Not just uneasy.

He looked...

Obsessed.

"You shouldn't have brought her," the man said suddenly, his voice rough but filled with something intense.

Sophia's breath caught.

Luciano's expression went cold.

"She's exactly where she needs to be."

The man laughed softly.

"You always did like to show off what's yours."

Sophia's chest tightened.

What's yours.

Luciano didn't react.

Didn't deny it.

"Explain," Luciano said calmly.

The man's eyes locked onto Sophia again.

Unapologetic.

Bold.

"I saw her," he said. "At the restaurant."

Sophia's stomach dropped.

"I couldn't help it," he continued, a strange smile forming. "You hide something like that for so long… then suddenly, she's out in the open?"

Luciano stepped slightly in front of Sophia.

Shielding her.

Possessive.

Dangerous.

"She's not something you look at," he said quietly.

But the threat in his voice was unmistakable.

The man smirked.

"I wasn't just looking."

Sophia's pulse spiked.

"I was taking her."

Silence.

Dead.

Heavy.

Luciano didn't move.

Didn't speak.

And that—

That was terrifying.

Because when he was this still…

It meant something worse was coming.

"You planned it," Luciano said.

Not a question.

A statement.

"Yes," the man said. "And I would've succeeded too… if your guards weren't so loyal."

Sophia felt a chill run down her spine.

Another attack.

Another attempt.

Because of her.

Because of him.

"You thought you could take her?" Luciano asked quietly.

The man smiled.

"I still can."

That was it.

The air shifted instantly.

Cold.

Sharp.

Final.

Luciano stepped forward.

Slow.

Controlled.

"You don't understand something," he said.

The man's smile faltered slightly.

Luciano stopped right in front of him.

Close.

Too close.

"She's not something you touch," he continued, his voice dropping.

"She's not something you take."

A pause.

Then—

"She's mine."

Sophia's heart slammed against her chest.

The word hit differently this time.

Not just control.

Not just obsession.

Something deeper.

Something darker.

The man scoffed. "You don't own people."

Luciano tilted his head slightly.

"No," he said calmly.

"But I own consequences."

The next moment happened fast.

Too fast.

Luciano gestured slightly.

His men moved instantly.

The room filled with tension, with fear, with something unspoken but understood.

Sophia's breath caught as she watched.

"Luciano—" she started, unsure why.

But he didn't look at her.

Didn't stop.

"This is what happens," he said quietly, his eyes still on the man, "when someone tries to take what belongs to me."

The man struggled.

But it didn't matter.

Nothing he did mattered anymore.

Sophia turned her head slightly, unable to fully watch what followed—

But she didn't need to.

The message was clear.

The outcome inevitable.

The silence afterward was louder than anything.

When she finally looked back—

It was over.

The man who had threatened her…

Was gone.

And Luciano stood there.

Untouched.

Unshaken.

Like nothing had happened.

But everything had.

Sophia's heart pounded wildly as he turned to face her.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

The room felt smaller.

The air heavier.

"You see now?" he said.

Her throat felt dry.

"See what?" she whispered.

"That this doesn't end," he replied. "Not for you."

Her chest tightened.

Not fear.

Not just fear.

Something else.

Something deeper.

Luciano stepped closer.

Closing the distance between them.

His hand lifted.

Tilting her chin up again.

Forcing her to meet his gaze.

"You walk outside," he said quietly, "and the world sees you."

Her pulse raced.

"And when they see you…" he continued, his voice darker now, "they want you."

Her breath hitched.

"And I don't share."

The words wrapped around her like chains.

Tight.

Unbreakable.

Sophia's heart pounded harder.

"Luciano…" she whispered.

But she didn't know what she was going to say.

Because everything felt too real.

Too intense.

Too much.

And then—

He did something she didn't expect.

He pulled her closer.

One arm around her waist.

Firm.

Possessive.

And before she could react—

He kissed her.

It wasn't soft.

It wasn't hesitant.

It was deliberate.

Claiming.

Like he was proving something.

Not to her.

To everyone watching.

Sophia's breath caught as her hands instinctively pressed against his chest.

But she didn't push him away.

Couldn't.

Because something inside her froze.

And something else—

Responded.

The moment stretched.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Then—

He pulled back slowly.

His forehead resting briefly against hers.

His voice low.

Rough.

Italian slipping from his lips like a promise.

"Sei mia, cara mia… per sempre."

Her heart skipped.

She didn't understand every word—

But she didn't need to.

Because his eyes said everything.

You're mine… my dear… forever.

A chill ran through her.

Not from fear.

Not entirely.

But from the weight of what he had just done.

What he had just declared.

And the terrifying truth behind it.

Because this wasn't just obsession anymore.

This was ownership.

Claim.

And a promise that couldn't be broken.

Sophia stepped back slightly, her breath uneven, her heart racing.

"You can't just—" she started.

But the words died in her throat.

Because she looked around.

At the guards.

At the room.

At the silence.

And she realized—

Everyone had seen.

Everyone knew.

And in this world…

That meant something.

Something permanent.

Luciano straightened, his gaze never leaving hers.

"Yes," he said quietly.

"I can."
