Late at night, the air inside Raven's room hung quiet as she sat with her legs crossed near the bed, the final bits of schoolwork with Harry now finished. Her eyes moved upwards as Bubbles appeared without warning, the faint shimmer of magic fading as the house-elf adjusted the pink ribbon on her head.
Bubbles glanced around once before locking eyes with Raven. "Have you reviewed the information I gave you on the three Unforgivable Curses that may aid you in killing Dementors using the Ring of the Cross?"
Raven's voice was calm, her fingers resting on her knees. "Are you talking about Crucio, Avada Kedavra, and Imperio?"
Bubbles nodded. "Correct."
"I've been learning them with the Ring of the Cross," Raven said. "But you mentioned before that using these spells has side effects. Could you explain that to me?"
Bubbles stepped closer and raised her finger. "Imperio requires intent. You must genuinely intend to dominate another being's will and impose your own. Casual use fails."
She continued without pause. "Crucio requires the intent to cause unbearable pain. You must want the target to suffer. Without that desire, the curse weakens or fails."
"And Avada Kedavra," Bubbles said, her voice quieter now, "requires absolute resolve. You must truly intend to kill. It is not powerd be anger alone. It is the decision to kill that powers it."
There was a brief silence between them before Bubbles added, "Repeated use erodes your empathy. It makes killing easier. Over time, it corrupts the soul. This is something dark wizards often struggle with."
She looked Raven in the eye. "Including Lord Voldemort, the one who inflicted the lightning-shaped scar on Harry Potter."
Raven's brow furrowed. "Every time I mention Voldemort, I feel like there's some sort of magical trigger encased in the name itself."
Bubbles chuckled, folding her arms. "That foolish dark wizard tried casting a forbidden curse on his own name so he could detect anyone who spoke it."
"That's why they say He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named or other ridiculous phrases," she added with a scoff.
Raven let out a short laugh. "Like some paltry magic like that would trigger with me saying it."
Bubbles smirked. "That's regional dark-lord thinking for you."
Raven leaned back. "Actually, using the Ring of the Cross and casting Avada Kedavra, I have found that the corruption that normally affects wizards in this world doesn't seem to apply to me."
"That's because you are a Traveler, Raven." Bubbles said.
"The corruption and side effects of dark magic don't affect you because you are not native to this magical system of this world," she explained. "You can integrate with it, use it, and bend it to your will but the soul decay, empathy erosion, and mental deterioration that accompany Crucio, Avada Kedavra, and Imperio do not take hold of you."
"Well, I guess I'm just lucky?" Raven said.
"Don't be arrogant." Bubbles raised a small hand. "Just because you don't suffer the side effects doesn't mean these curses should be used carelessly."
Raven tilted her head. "I don't know. I was thinking of using Imperio on a Dementor. Maybe to keep one as a guard for Vault Zero."
Bubbles blinked. "You want to take control of a Dementor?"
Raven nodded slowly. "Why not? They could be useful as summons in future battles. A being that's immune to magic could be very handy."
"Only you would think of that," Bubbles said with a faint shake of her head. "Typical Traveler mentality."
"If you can control the corrupted mind of a Dementor, more power to you."
Raven rested her chin on her knuckles. "All right. Give me a rundown on Dementors. Their abilities. And what they can do."
"Dementors are non-corporeal dark entities," Bubbles began explaining. "They feed on happiness, hope, and positive emotion. They induce despair, depression, and emotional numbness. They force victims to relive their worst memories."
"They are immune to most magic," she continued, her voice steady. "Their most feared ability is the Dementor's Kiss, where they consume the victim's soul through the mouth, leaving the body alive but empty like a living husk."
"Wizards believe them to be indestructible. They rely on the Patronus Charm only to repel them."
Raven's voice was low but confident. "All right. I have a better idea of what we are now dealing with."
She stood. "Take me to Azkaban. Let's get started."
Bubbles grinned. "All right."
She reached for Raven's hand—and a moment later, the world shifted.
They appeared atop a craggy, wind-ravaged island, jagged cliffs rising all around them as waves crashed against the rocks below. The sky was blackened, the air freezing. Storm winds howled across the surface. Above, dozens of black-cloaked shapes drifted like vultures on the wind.
Raven's gaze swept the sky as her shoes touched the stone. She watched the floating figures circle above and around them, their forms shifting with eerie silence.
Bubbles looked over at her. "Are you sure you don't want to learn the Patronus Charm?"
Raven raised an eyebrow. "I came here to kill them. Not repel them."
Bubbles gave a tiny nod. "Call me when you need me."
She vanished, leaving Raven alone on the wind-washed stone.
With a calm breath, Raven rose into the air. She hovered silently as the Dementors began to take notice of her. One by one, the floating horrors turned in her direction, their movements slow and deliberate as they glided towards her.
Raven narrowed her eyes, scanning the island's jagged edges and surrounding skies. "There are far more of these things than Miranda mentioned."
"She said there are a few dozen."
Her gaze darkened.
"I can detect hundreds of magical signatures."
A moment of silence passed.
"They've multiplied."
