Chapter 28 - Chapter 31: She Doesn’t Know It Was Him

The memory of her pack's destruction lingered like a shadow that refused to fade.

Selena moved through the dim corridors of the vampire palace, her silver eyes scanning every corner. Every whisper of movement set her nerves on edge. She had survived countless battles, endured captivity, and faced death more times than she cared to count—but the questions that plagued her mind tonight felt heavier than any blade.

Her thoughts kept returning to that night—her pack, the fire, the screams—and the second figure who had saved her. Someone fast, powerful… and mercilessly precise. She had glimpsed crimson eyes, a presence that had simultaneously terrified and protected her. Her instincts told her that figure wasn't like the other vampires who had attacked. But there was a truth she hadn't yet realized: the figure was closer than she thought.

Selena entered the training room, her mind a storm of suspicion and curiosity.

"Focus, Selena," she whispered to herself, gripping the practice sword tightly. "If you're going to survive here… you need to know who to trust."

She struck the wooden dummy repeatedly, each swing a mix of frustration and pent-up rage. Every strike was sharper than the last, her silver eyes flashing with intensity. The memory of Adrian's calm expression haunted her. He had saved her… but she couldn't reconcile that with the man who now ruled over her captivity.

Her thoughts drifted to him—Prince Adrian Draven.

The prince who appeared calm, untouchable, and inscrutable. The one whose crimson eyes seemed to pierce through her very soul. The one who had saved her that night but had done so in secrecy, leaving her to believe the attack had been entirely random.

Selena's chest tightened as she clenched her fists.

"I don't even know who saved me," she muttered. "And yet… someone did. Someone powerful… someone close."

Later, she walked through the palace gardens, moonlight bathing the manicured paths. The silver glow reflected in her eyes, highlighting the tension that pulled tight across her features. She recalled the way the vampire had moved—fast, precise, unyielding. The instincts of her wolf stirred, whispering that the one who had saved her was no stranger.

Her pulse quickened.

"Could it be him?" she wondered aloud. "No… Adrian is my captor. He wouldn't…"

But doubt gnawed at her.

She remembered the way the vampire's movements had been elegant yet fierce, controlled yet lethal. The sense of authority, the confidence in every strike… it mirrored Adrian. The same rhythm, the same precision. Her heart began to pound with uneasy realization, but she pushed it away.

It can't be him, she thought. I would know. He would have revealed himself… right?

Selena's training that night was relentless. Every swing of the sword, every practiced dodge, carried with it the shadow of questions that refused to be silenced.

"I'll find out the truth," she whispered fiercely. "One way or another."

She paused, taking a deep breath. The night was quiet, too quiet, and the palace seemed to hold its own secrets in the shadows. Every echo, every distant footstep felt like a whisper meant for her alone.

Suddenly, a rustle in the hedges caught her attention. She spun, sword at the ready.

Nothing.

Just the wind.

Yet instinct screamed at her that someone—or something—had been watching.

The next morning, the palace was already alive with activity. Selena moved among the nobles, listening, observing. Her sharp eyes caught the subtle glances, the veiled warnings, and the whispered conversations that spoke of secrets too dangerous to name.

Adrian appeared suddenly, his presence commanding the space before him. His crimson eyes found hers, and for a moment, time seemed to halt.

"You trained late last night," he said, his voice calm yet carrying the weight of authority.

Selena's eyes narrowed. "I train whenever I want. You're not my master."

He studied her, unreadable, and then inclined his head slightly. "You're learning quickly. That will serve you well… when the real threats arrive."

Selena clenched her jaw. "And how would you know about the real threats? You weren't even there."

Adrian's gaze lingered, piercing yet unreadable. For a heartbeat, she thought she saw hesitation in his eyes—an emotion he rarely allowed to show.

"You don't yet see the full picture," he said quietly. "One day, you will."

Selena's wolf stirred uneasily. There was something in his tone, a weight that hinted at truths she was not yet ready to accept.

Later, as she retreated to her chambers, Selena's thoughts returned to that night.

He saved me… but who was he?

Her fingers brushed the scar on her arm—a remnant of that fateful night. The mark of survival, a constant reminder of pain and resilience. She sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the ceiling, grappling with her emotions.

Could Adrian have been there?

Every instinct screamed yes. But her heart resisted, fighting against the idea that her captor could also be her savior.

And yet… the similarities were undeniable. The movements, the precision, the calm under lethal pressure—it all aligned with what she remembered.

Selena's hands trembled slightly as she wrapped her arms around her knees. Her mind raced, torn between distrust and reluctant curiosity. She knew one thing with certainty: the truth would change everything.

And she wasn't ready for that yet.

In the shadows of the palace, Adrian watched from a distance. Crimson eyes fixed on her form, a mixture of frustration and longing simmering beneath his calm exterior. He had saved her once, secretly, risking everything to ensure her survival. And yet, he could not reveal it—not yet. The consequences were too great.

She didn't know it was him.

Not yet.

But the day would come when the truth could no longer be hidden. When her anger, her grief, and her desire for vengeance would collide with the reality he had tried to shield her from.

And when that day arrived… she would be forced to confront everything: betrayal, loyalty, destiny, and a love she was far too stubborn to admit.
