The entire ballroom fell silent.
Hundreds of eyes turned toward Emily.
The man in the gray suit stepped closer, his gaze fixed on the diamond necklace around her neck.
"That necklace," he repeated coldly, "belongs to me."
Whispers immediately spread across the room.
"Is she wearing a stolen necklace?"
"That's Alexander Knight's wife…"
"This is becoming a scandal."
Sophia covered her mouth as if shocked.
"Oh dear," she said softly. "Emily, this must be some terrible misunderstanding."
But the slight smile hiding in her eyes told a different story.
Emily remained calm.
Alexander stepped forward slightly, placing himself beside her.
"Careful with your accusations," he said coldly.
The man straightened his suit.
"I am Victor Hale," he announced. "That necklace was stolen from my private collection last year."
Gasps rippled through the crowd.
Victor continued,
"I reported it to the police myself."
Sophia slowly stepped closer, her voice full of false concern.
"Emily… perhaps you should explain where you got it."
Emily could feel every guest staring at her.
But instead of panicking, she simply looked toward Alexander's grandfather.
The old man stood near the back of the ballroom, watching everything with calm interest.
Emily took a small step forward.
"You're right," she said calmly.
"I should explain."
The whispers grew louder.
Victor crossed his arms.
"Yes. I would very much like to hear that."
Emily slowly removed the necklace from around her neck.
The diamonds sparkled brightly under the chandelier lights.
"I received this necklace earlier today," she said clearly.
"And I was told to wear it to this event."
Sophia's expression remained perfectly composed.
"Oh? And who gave it to you?"
Emily slowly turned her head.
Her eyes met Sophia's.
The room seemed to freeze again.
Sophia's smile flickered for just a moment.
Then Emily spoke.
"I believe," she said quietly,
"the person who gave it to me is standing right here in this room."
Gasps filled the ballroom.
Sophia laughed lightly.
"Emily, you must be very careful with such claims."
Emily stepped forward again.
"You're right."
She lifted the necklace slightly.
"That's why I made sure someone witnessed it."
Sophia's confidence wavered.
"What do you mean?"
Emily's voice remained steady.
"Before coming here tonight, Alexander's grandfather examined this necklace himself."
Every head turned toward the old man.
Sophia's face lost a little color.
The grandfather slowly stepped forward, leaning on his cane.
"Yes," he said calmly.
"I did."
The room went completely silent again.
Victor Hale frowned.
"You're saying you knew this necklace was stolen?"
The old man smiled faintly.
"Yes."
Then his sharp gaze moved across the crowd… until it stopped on Sophia.
"And I also knew exactly who planned to use it."
Sophia's heart skipped.
For the first time that night…
Her perfect plan was beginning to collapse.
