The sky had turned the color of ash.
Dark clouds rolled over the city like a living storm, swallowing the morning light. The air smelled of smoke, rain, and something far more dangerous—dark energy.
In the center of Central Park, the battle raged.
Cremodogs leaped from every direction, their glowing eyes cutting through the smoke like red knives. Their growls echoed across the streets, making the ground tremble beneath every step.
Nova stood at the front, her hands raised, her eyes glowing violet with psychic force.
A shattered bench lifted into the air and flew across the park, smashing two Cremodogs aside.
Behind her, Luna froze the ground in a spreading sheet of ice.
Aaryan's lightning split the darkness.
Millie rushed between the injured civilians, raising shimmering healing barriers.
And at the center of it all stood Kai and Maria.
Fire.
Wind.
Together.
Kai thrust his arm forward, sending a blazing arc of flame across the path.
Maria spun beside him, and the flames were caught by a violent gust of wind, spiraling upward into a fiery tornado that roared through the advancing monsters.
The Cremodogs were thrown backward, some consumed by flames, others flung into trees and shattered stone.
Nova looked up.
On the rooftop of the abandoned laboratory, Dr. Vertex stood in the rain.
His long black coat whipped in the wind.
Lightning flashed behind him, illuminating the cruel smile on his face.
He spread his arms.
> "Beautiful, isn't it?"
His voice echoed across the park, unnaturally loud.
> "Fire and wind… reunited at last."
Kai's eyes burned.
"You did this."
Vertex laughed.
> "Of course I did."
Maria's expression darkened.
"You brought us back."
> "Not merely brought you back," Vertex said softly. "I perfected you."
A cold silence fell.
Nova stepped forward, anger rising in her chest.
"What do you mean?"
Vertex's eyes locked onto Nova.
> "One year ago, when Shadowmind's portal collapsed, the explosion should have destroyed them completely. But love is a fascinating source of energy. Their bond created a resonance strong enough for me to preserve their consciousness."
Millie whispered, "That's impossible…"
Vertex smiled wider.
> "With science, nothing is impossible."
Suddenly, Kai's fire flared violently.
He grabbed his head.
A painful groan escaped him.
Maria staggered beside him as the wind around her turned chaotic.
Nova rushed toward them.
"Kai!"
His voice trembled.
> "Something's wrong…"
Vertex's laughter rang through the storm.
> "Their powers are unstable. Every moment they remain alive, the dark energy inside them grows stronger."
Maria looked up sharply.
"Dark energy?"
Vertex nodded.
> "They were reborn through the remains of Shadowmind's portal. Which means a part of him still lives inside them."
The words hit Nova like lightning.
No.
That could not be true.
But then the wind around Maria suddenly darkened, turning from silver-white currents into black spirals.
Kai's flames deepened from orange to crimson red.
A shadow passed across his eyes.
The Cremodogs froze.
Then, as if obeying an invisible command, every one of them turned toward Kai and Maria.
Aaryan shouted, "They're listening to them!"
Vertex raised one hand.
> "Because they are the key."
The ground shook.
A deep, monstrous sound rumbled from beneath the city.
Not a growl.
Not thunder.
Something far worse.
The earth split open at the far end of the park.
Trees snapped.
Stone pathways cracked apart.
From the darkness below, something enormous began to rise.
A giant claw emerged first, black and jagged, with red light glowing between its scales.
Then another.
Then its head.
The creature towered above the buildings.
Its eyes glowed purple.
Horns curved backward like blades.
Its body was wrapped in smoke and living shadow.
Nova stared upward, her breath caught in her throat.
Crovax.
The giant creature had returned.
But this time it was bigger.
Stronger.
And behind it came more Cremodogs.
Hundreds.
No—
Thousands.
They flooded out from the cracks in the ground like an endless army.
People screamed in the distance.
Car alarms rang.
The city had become a battlefield once again.
Vertex's voice echoed through the chaos.
> "Welcome to phase two."
Nova clenched her fists.
"No more."
Her psychic energy surged.
Cars lifted from the streets.
Streetlights bent.
Glass trembled in nearby windows.
Her eyes shone brighter than ever before.
> "This ends today."
Crovax roared.
The sound shook the clouds apart.
Kai stepped beside Nova.
His flames rose.
Maria moved to her other side, wind spiraling around her like wings.
Aaryan crackled with lightning.
Luna's ice spread across the ground.
Millie raised a glowing shield around them all.
For one perfect moment, the team stood united.
Vertex watched from above.
Still smiling.
Because he knew something they did not.
Deep beneath the laboratory, hidden in the lowest chamber, a new portal had begun to open.
Larger than the first.
Darker than night itself.
And from within it, thousands of glowing red eyes slowly opened.
