Chapter 33 - The New Student

Morning light slipped through the classroom windows, soft and calm.

The room felt peaceful—almost too peaceful, like nothing had happened at all.

Students chatted and laughed, filling the space with ordinary noise.

Mira sat in the back, quiet as always, watching them.

Her gaze drifted… slowly… until it stopped.

An empty seat.

Jin's seat.

She looked at it for a moment longer than necessary…

then turned away.

Her fingers tapped lightly against the desk.

Once.

Twice.

Then stilled.

The classroom door opened.

The teacher walked in.

"Good morning, everyone."

The noise gradually faded.

He adjusted his glasses, a small smile on his face.

"Today, we have a new student joining us."

A few students straightened in their seats.

The door opened again.

She walked in.

Long dark hair. Measured steps. A quiet presence that didn't try to stand out—yet somehow did.

Min Ji.

There was something about her.

Not loud. Not striking.

Just… difficult to read.

A few boys immediately started whispering.

She didn't react.

Not even slightly.

She simply stood there, calm, composed—as if none of it concerned her.

The teacher gestured.

"Go ahead. Introduce yourself."

Min Ji nodded once.

"I'm Min Ji."

A brief pause.

"Nice to meet you."

That was it.

Short. Clean. Enough.

For a moment, the room stayed quiet—like people were expecting more.

But she had already said everything she intended to say.

She walked forward and took a seat without hesitation, her movements natural… like she had always been part of the class.

Mira watched her.

Closely.

Her eyes narrowed just a fraction.

Something felt off.

Not obvious.

But enough.

Something about her…

…didn't belong.

Time passed.

Break time came.

The classroom slowly filled with noise again as students moved around, forming small groups.

But Mira didn't move.

She stayed in her seat.

Watching.

Thinking.

Her gaze returned to Min Ji.

Just for a second longer this time.

Then—

Emilia leaned toward Veron.

"Hey… do you know where Jin is?"

Veron didn't look at her.

"I don't."

Flat. Dismissive.

Before Emilia could press further—

A quiet voice spoke nearby.

"He's sick."

Min Ji.

A subtle shift passed through the room.

Not silence—

Attention.

Emilia blinked.

"You know him?"

Min Ji nodded.

"Yes."

A brief pause.

Then—

"We grew up together. He's like an older brother to me."

Now the room was listening.

"How long have you known him?" someone asked.

Min Ji took a small moment.

"…Since we were kids."

"Your name… you're Korean, right?"

"Yes."

"I moved away."

Her tone stayed even.

"When I was seventeen, I went to the UK for my last year of high school."

"The UK?" someone repeated.

She nodded.

"And after that… we lost contact."

A short silence.

Then—

"Wait—Jin is Korean? We never really thought about it. And you said older brother… are you the same age?"

Min Ji shook her head slightly.

"He's older than me. By a year."

A brief pause.

"He should be nineteen now."

Emilia blinked, then glanced around before saying with a small laugh—

"So… that makes three Koreans in this class now."

A couple of students looked between them.

"Three?"

Emilia pointed lightly.

"Jin. Min Ji… and Mira."

For a moment—

A few eyes turned toward the back.

Toward Mira.

Mira didn't react immediately.

Then, slowly—

She lifted her gaze.

Met theirs.

Calm.

Unreadable.

"…Yeah," she said quietly.

Just one word.

Nothing more.

But she didn't look away this time.

Min Ji noticed.

Just briefly.

Their eyes met for a second.

Then both looked away.

Like nothing happened.

Mira leaned back slightly in her seat.

Childhood friend.

That meant—

Min Ji knew Jin longer than anyone here.

Her fingers tapped once more against the desk.

A habit.

Thinking.

Does she know something?

The thought came—

And stayed.

Veron remained silent.

But his eyes never left Min Ji.

Watching.

Measuring.

Something about her answers—

Too smooth.

Too clean.

Like they had been prepared.

He didn't trust that.

Not yet.

A short while later—

The conversation faded naturally, students drifting back into smaller groups.

Emilia turned slightly in her seat, glancing toward Daniel.

"So… you've been quiet today."

Daniel shrugged.

"Just didn't feel like talking."

Emilia smirked.

"That's new."

Daniel exhaled softly, leaning back a little.

"…It's been a long morning."

Emilia let out a small breath, resting her chin lightly on her hand.

"Yeah… feels like something's missing without him."

"…Yeah," Daniel replied simply.

A brief pause settled between them.

Then—

Emilia's pen slipped from her fingers, rolling off the edge of the desk.

She leaned down quickly to pick it up—

At the same time, Daniel's hand moved without hesitation, stopping just at the corner of the desk.

Not grabbing.

Not pulling.

Just there—

blocking the sharp edge.

A quiet, instinctive gesture.

Emilia paused for a fraction of a second when she noticed.

Then picked up the pen and sat back up.

"…Thanks," she said lightly.

Daniel shrugged again.

"Careful."

That was it.

Simple.

Their posture relaxed after that.

The tension eased.

They leaned slightly closer without noticing.

Natural.

Veron noticed.

His gaze shifted.

Then back to Min Ji.

Then briefly to Mira.

Something felt off.

But he said nothing.

In the hospital—

Jin lay on his bed.

The ceiling above him was white.

Too white.

Too clean.

Too quiet.

"…Huh…"

He slowly sat up.

His body felt strange.

Not pain.

Just…

Different.

"…I'm… weaker…"

He paused.

Frowned slightly.

"…No."

That wasn't it.

He looked at his hands.

Slowly.

Carefully.

His fingers moved.

His breathing steadied.

"…Something changed."

The door opened.

A nurse stepped in.

"Oh—you're awake."

She smiled.

"You were brought here by Mr. William."

Jin didn't respond.

He just listened.

"I'll let him know you're awake."

She turned and left.

The door closed softly.

Silence returned.

Jin stood up slowly.

Walked to the window.

Outside—

The sky was clear.

Bright.

Normal.

But his gaze shifted.

To the side.

A small bag.

Clean clothes.

Waiting.

Prepared.

Jin stared at it.

Quietly.
