Chapter 35 - The Shadow of the Knot

The wind in the valley felt strange that morning.

Not the soft wind that brushed against the leaves and whispered ancient secrets, but a heavy, almost metallic breath that seemed to carry murmurs from several lifetimes.

Kael had woken before dawn, his red eyes half-hidden beneath his black hair. Though his gaze looked tired, it was already fixed on Lyra, who was still asleep beside him, as if the mere thought of losing her again burned through his soul.

"You're still sleeping…" he murmured, his voice rough but gentle.

Lyra shifted slightly, her eyelids fluttering open to reveal bright eyes still heavy with the memories they had shared the day before inside the Knot.

"Kael… you're already awake?" she asked, letting out a soft yawn, but Kael did not smile.

"I didn't sleep, Lyra. Every moment away from you is a moment where I risk losing you…"

Lyra sat up and placed a hand against his cheek. Kael felt his heart beat even faster. The jealousy and intensity of his love were still there, but this time, there was a new awareness: he had to protect, not just possess.

Before they could exchange another word, a deep rumble echoed from outside the valley. The Knot, until then peaceful, vibrated faintly.

"This… this isn't normal," Lyra whispered.

"The Knot is reacting…" Eryan said, appearing beside them. "It feels like… something… or someone… is trying to influence it."

Kael rose abruptly, his protective instincts taking over. His expression hardened, though Lyra's presence kept him grounded.

"We need to go. Now."

They stepped out of their natural shelter, and the wind, growing stronger by the second, carried with it fragments of shattered memories—pieces of past lives no ordinary human could ever understand.

"Kael…" Lyra said, her voice trembling. "It's like the Knot is trying to show us something…"

Kael felt his chest tighten. The thought of seeing more secrets connected to Lyra or Eryan was unbearable, but he knew they had no choice.

Suddenly, a shadow crossed the valley.

Not a simple figure, but a black shimmer that seemed to swallow the light around it. Every step it took made the earth tremble and sent a freezing chill through their bones.

"Who are you?!" Kael shouted, his voice carrying across the valley.

The shadow stopped and slowly took shape. It was a creature neither fully human nor fully spiritual, its eyes gleaming like two black stones. A powerful and threatening aura radiated from it, and yet… Kael felt something disturbingly familiar.

"You… you are…" he murmured, unable to complete the sentence.

The creature tilted its head slightly. Then a deep, resonant voice rose, seeming to vibrate through their souls.

"Kael, Lyra… Eryan… you are bound to a destiny far greater than you can imagine. But your attachment to one another… makes your bond fragile and vulnerable."

Lyra took a step back, tension tightening in the air around her.

"Fragile?" she asked. "We are tied by the Knot, we have crossed lifetimes… how can that be fragile?"

"Because the Knot…" the creature replied, "is not merely a bond of love. It is a balance between light and shadow. And the light of your union draws those who would seek to absorb it for their own purposes."

Kael felt a shiver run down his spine. His protective instinct twisted into an inner storm of possessiveness and jealousy.

"No one… NO ONE will touch Lyra… ever… not even you."

The shadow seemed to smile—or at least, Kael had the impression that it did.

"Even in this world, even before ancient truths, the final choice… belongs to you. But every choice will have a price."

Before they could react, the creature vanished into a whirlwind of black wind and golden light. The Knot slowly calmed, but cracks still marked the ground, and the air continued to hum with the secrets they had just brushed against.

Kael turned to Lyra, anger and jealousy still burning in his eyes, but now mixed with a deep determination.

"Lyra… no matter what happens, I will protect you. Even if I have to cross every shadow in this world…"

Lyra took his hands, feeling his power and resolve intertwine with her own.

"And I, Kael… I will stay with you, but I need to understand. There is more to the Knot than we can see. I need to learn… so I can protect us both."

Eryan placed a hand on Kael's shoulder.

"She's right. We must understand the Knot before it learns our weaknesses…"

Kael gave a slow nod, a flicker of jealousy barely restrained as he sensed Eryan's closeness, but he understood that the strength of the three of them lay in unity, not separation.

The rest of the day passed in a careful exploration of the valley. Every step revealed fragments of ancient secrets: glowing glyphs etched into rocks, flowers that seemed to respond to their emotions, and whispers coming from the trees themselves.

Guided by her intuition, Lyra touched the symbols and read the memories the Knot wanted to share. Kael stayed close behind her, ready to intercept any threat. Eryan observed in near-supernatural calm, but Kael could still sense that shadow of tension—the fear that Lyra might choose the other… a soft but persistent jealousy, like an emotional reward for loyal readers.

At last, they reached a clearing bathed in a soft violet glow. At its center stood a stone engraved with ancient runes.

"This is where the Knot wants us to come…" Lyra whispered.

Kael stepped forward, his hands trembling slightly. Each rune glowed faintly beneath the touch of his energy. A voice echoed inside his mind:

Protect her… no matter what happens.

He turned toward Lyra, and in his eyes, she saw promise and jealousy entwined—a combination that had never felt more intense.

And as the violet light wrapped around him, a vision emerged…

A vision of a possible future, where the Knot would be attacked by a mysterious force, where their love would be tested, and where Kael would have to make an impossible choice.

But one thing was clear: no force in this world, nor in any other lifetime, would ever be able to break their bond.
