The head of the medical team jerked his hand away from Celine's chest after the final round of manual compressions proved ineffective. He glanced quickly at the nurse on the right side of the bed.
"Get the defibrillator ready, set it to 200 joules!" he ordered.
The nurse moved deftly, grabbing the two electrically charged metal pads and applying the conductive gel in one practiced motion. The chief physician snatched the pads, pressing them firmly against Celine's chest.
"Step back from the bed!" he barked firmly. The entire medical team took a step back.
Thud!
The jolt of electrical energy sent Celine's body jerking violently; her back lifted several centimeters off the mattress before she finally fell back, limp and lifeless. The chief doctor immediately shifted his gaze to the medical monitor. The line remained flat, still emitting a single, ear-piercing, shrill beep.
"Recharge it, increase it to three hundred sixty joules! Quickly!"
