Mark froze. Those words cut deeper than any outburst.
"Don't be crazy, Seren!" Mark said, his voice trembling. "It's me, your husband!"
Seren furrowed her brow slightly, as if trying to dig something out of the bottom of a dry well. She studied Mark's face intently, from his jawline to his eyes, yet not a single flicker of emotion surfaced.
"Husband?" Seren whispered softly. She shook her head slowly. "I'm sorry... I think you've got the wrong person. I don't know you."
Mark felt his heart stop beating. His world, filled with ego and control, suddenly crumbled in a single short sentence. Before him, Seren still sat calmly, but Mark only now realized that the woman whose dignity he had trampled on all this time had truly left, leaving only her body behind.
