Chapter 16 - SOMEONE

A few days after the rooftop—

when words had already been spoken and could not be taken back—

Shin did what he had said he would.

He joined the library.

He expected silence.

Emptiness.

A room that belonged to no one.

But the first time he entered—

he found it occupied.

Not by noise.

Not by chaos.

But by a single presence.

A girl.

The same girl from the festival.

The one who hadn't approached.

The one who had simply disappeared into the crowd as if she had never intended to stay.

For a moment—

Shin paused.

Not because he didn't know what to do.

But because this—

was unexpected.

Still, he said nothing.

Filled out the required forms.

Signed his name without hesitation.

And took his place.

Not near her.

Not too far either.

Just enough distance to remain separate.

She noticed.

Her eyes lifted slightly—

then returned to her book.

No reaction.

No greeting.

And somehow—

that felt appropriate.

Days passed.

A quiet rhythm formed.

He would come.

She would already be there—

or arrive shortly after.

Neither spoke.

Not once.

And yet—

it didn't feel awkward.

It felt like two people sharing the same silence—

without needing to explain it.

Then—

sports festival preparations began.

The school grew louder.

Busier.

Restless.

And the library—

lost its stillness.

Students stopped coming.

Teachers were occupied.

Clubs demanded time.

But for Shin—

and for her—

the library remained.

Because they weren't just visitors anymore.

They were part of it.

Library club members.

Assigned duty.

Which is how—

on a warm afternoon—

they found themselves sitting side by side—

behind the librarian's desk.

Not reading separately.

But working.

Stacks of returned books lay in uneven piles.

A register book sat open between them.

A pen rested exactly at the center—

as if it didn't belong to either of them.

Shin picked up a book.

Checked its code.

Wrote it down.

Placed it neatly aside.

Efficient.

Precise.

Beside him—

she did the same.

No wasted movement.

No unnecessary sound.

Pages flipped.

Pens moved.

Silence—

again.

But different this time.

Shared.

A student approached the desk.

"Um… I want to issue this book."

Shin looked up.

"…Give it."

The student hesitated for a second—

then handed it over.

Shin noted the details quickly and slid it back.

"Return it in a week."

"…Y-yes."

The student left.

Silence returned.

A few minutes later—

another came.

This time, the girl handled it.

Her voice was soft.

"…Your ID."

Short.

Clear.

No extra words.

Shin noticed.

Not intentionally.

But he did.

"…Efficient," he thought.

Time passed slowly.

The kind of slow that didn't feel heavy—

just steady.

At one point—

their hands reached for the same book.

A brief pause.

Then—

she pulled her hand back slightly.

"…You can take it."

Her voice—

quiet.

Shin looked at the book.

Then at her.

"…It doesn't matter."

He took another one instead.

And just like that—

the moment ended.

No awkwardness.

No lingering tension.

Just continuation.

Outside, the sounds of sports practice echoed faintly—

whistles, footsteps, distant shouting.

Inside—

there was only the turning of pages.

After a while—

Shin leaned back slightly.

A rare pause in his movement.

"…You come here every day," he said.

It wasn't really a question.

She didn't look at him.

"…You too."

A simple answer.

Accurate.

Shin didn't respond.

But something about that—

felt enough.

No curiosity.

No follow-up.

Just acknowledgment.

A few more students came and left.

Books were issued.

Returned.

Recorded.

The day moved forward.

Then slowly—

toward evening.

Sunlight shifted.

From bright—

to soft.

The library grew quieter.

Even the distant noise outside faded.

They continued their work.

Side by side.

Without conversation.

Without effort.

Like two people who didn't need to understand each other—

to exist in the same space.

And for Shin—

that was new.

Not uncomfortable.

Not confusing.

Just…

different.

As the last book was placed back on the shelf—

and the register closed—

the silence remained.

Unbroken.

But no longer empty.

It had shape now.

Even if neither of them gave it a name.

Continue after sports festival
