Chapter 9 - THE WORDS

Words are strange things.

Invisible. Weightless.

And yet—

sometimes they feel like magic.

The kind that can build something out of nothing… or break something that once feels unshakable.

A single sentence becomes a bridge.

Or a blade.

It all depends on them—

the words that slip out of one's mouth.

For what purpose.

For whom they are meant.

Whose heart they reach.

And how they are carried.

People often believe actions matter more.

But words—

words linger.

They echo in quiet moments, replay in the mind long after everything else fades.

A careless phrase stays for years.

A gentle one becomes a memory someone holds onto when everything else falls apart.

With words—

you meet someone new.

Pull them closer.

Create something that doesn't exist before.

And with the same words—

you lose someone.

Push them away.

Turn something warm into something distant.

They bring laughter.

Or leave behind silence.

In the end—

words are neither kind nor cruel by nature.

They simply become what people make of them.

Magic—

or a curse.

————

After that heated exchange—

their conversations didn't end all at once.

They faded.

Slowly.

Like a voice losing strength mid-sentence.

What once stretched into long, wandering talks…

now shrank into brief greetings.

A quiet "morning."

A passing "yeah."

Nothing more.

It wasn't that they didn't want to talk.

The words were still there.

Somewhere.

Unspoken.

Unreached.

But something had shifted.

Something subtle, yet undeniable.

A thin layer of awkwardness settled between them.

Not heavy enough to break everything—

but enough to hold them back.

Their eyes still met sometimes.

Across the classroom.

Through passing moments.

Brief. Accidental.

But their minds—

never followed.

Each time their gazes touched,

it felt like standing at the edge of a conversation that never began.

And so—

they returned to silence.

Not the familiar one they once shared…

but a different kind.

One that knew what had been said—

and what couldn't be taken back.

It was a few days after the rain.

The silence between Minato Itsuki and Shin Hitori still remained.

Unspoken.

UnresolvedThe classroom buzzed with noise as usual.

Students laughed, argued, shared stories—small, meaningless conversations that somehow filled the space with life.

At the center of it—

Shin Hitori.

People talked to him, called his name, tried to get his attention.

And as always—

he responded just enough.

Just enough to exist in it.

But not enough to care.

Near the window—

sat someone else.

Kei Takahashi.

He wasn't silent because he didn't want to talk.

He was silent because no one talked to him.

His pen moved steadily across his notebook.

But his eyes—

they weren't always on the page.

They shifted.

From group to group.

From laughter to laughter.

Listening.

Observing.

Sometimes—

he reacted.

A small smile at someone's joke.

A slight pause when something interesting was said.

A faint curiosity in his eyes.

But no one noticed.

To the class—

he was just that type.

A quiet, hardworking, "nerd."

Not social.

Not interesting.

Not worth approaching.

And slowly—

that image became his reality.

Kei lowered his gaze again.

His fingers tightened slightly around his pen.

"…Maybe I should say something…"

The thought came.

But his lips didn't move.

The moment passed.

Just like always.

Across the room—

Shin Hitori was watching.

Unlike others—

Shin noticed everything.

The way Kei's eyes moved.

The way he reacted quietly.

The way he almost spoke—

and then didn't.

"…So he wants to be part of it," Shin thought.

"But can't."

That made him different.

Not like the others who chased.

Not like Shin, who rejected.

Kei Takahashi was someone who stood in between.

Later that day—

as the classroom began to empty—

Shin walked past his desk.

Then—

he stopped.

"…Hey."

Kei looked up immediately.

A bit too quickly.

"…Yeah?" he replied.

There was a hint of surprise in his voice.

Not because someone spoke to him—

But because it was Shin.

Shin looked at him for a moment.

"You listen a lot."

Kei blinked.

"…I guess."

"You want to join them?" Shin asked.

The question was direct.

Too direct.

Kei hesitated.

For a brief second—

his usual calm broke.

"…It's not that simple," he said quietly.

Shin watched him carefully.

"Why not?"

Kei looked away.

"They already decided what I am," he said.

A small pause.

"So… it's easier to stay like this."

Silence.

For the first time—

Shin didn't have a quick answer.

"…You're strange," Shin said.

Kei gave a faint, almost tired smile.

"So are you."

And just like that—

the conversation ended.

But this time—

it didn't feel empty.

Because for the first time—

Shin Hitori had met someone who didn't reject people…

…and yet still ended up alone.
