Chapter 55 - Chapter 55: The Silent Siege

The sky was still filled with the glittering dust of the shattered Black-Sun, but on the ground, a heavy, oppressive silence had fallen. Ray lay on a stone slab inside the Aether-Spire, his body cold and his violet-light arm dark. The 'Origin Key' in his palm was no longer glowing; it looked like a piece of dead coal.

"His core isn't just empty, Elara," Caelum said, his silver eyes scanning Ray's vitals. "It's fractured. He didn't just channel mana; he channeled his own life-code. He's in a 'System-Lock'."

Elara didn't look up from Ray's pale face. She was holding his human hand, her own fingers trembling. "How long, Caelum? How long until he wakes up?"

"I don't know," Caelum replied, turning toward the canyon entrance. "And we don't have the luxury of waiting. The Citadel has launched their 'Ghost-Division'."

Outside, the mutants and scavengers were already taking positions. But this wasn't like the previous battles. There were no loud engines, no screaming sirens. Instead, a thick, artificial fog began to roll into the canyon. It was a 'Nano-Mist'—millions of microscopic drones designed to eat through mana-shields and organic tissue alike.

"They're not coming with ships this time," Grog growled, his iron jaw clicking. "They're coming with the wind."

"Formation Zero!" Elara shouted, stepping out of the Spire and raising her rifle. "Don't breathe the mist! Use the filtration masks!"

The Aether-Bound stood their ground, but the Ghost-Division was invisible. Figures in active-camouflage suits moved through the fog like predators, their high-frequency blades vibrating silently.

A mutant scout screamed as a hidden blade pierced his chest. Then another. The Aether-Bound were fighting ghosts.

"Caelum, we need a pulse!" Elara yelled, firing blindly into the fog.

"I can't trigger an EMP without frying Ray's remaining circuits!" Caelum shouted back, his silver blades clashing against an invisible foe.

Inside the Spire, in the deep darkness of his unconscious mind, Ray was drifting. He could hear the screams, the clashing of metal, and Elara's desperate voice. But he was trapped behind a wall of grey code.

Reboot Protocol: Denied.

Internal Mana: 0.01%.

Then, he felt something. It wasn't mana. it was a 'Resonance'. Every member of the Aether-Bound who was fighting outside was connected to him through the Heart. He could feel their fear, their courage, and their refusal to give up.

"They... are... me," Ray's spirit whispered in the void.
