The Shadow Corridor suddenly became too silent.
Not ordinary silence.
A silence that felt like the world was holding its breath.
The shadows that had been moving along the walls now stopped completely. They did not disappear. They merely... waited.
Kael felt that change faster than Lyra.
The symbol on his wrist pulsed slowly. Every pulse felt like an echo from something very far... yet very large.
Lyra read the sentence on the book page again.
"The second observer has found you."
She closed that book quickly.
"Not good."
Kael stared at the corridor before them.
"What's the difference between the first and second observer?"
Lyra did not answer immediately.
Several seconds passed before she said,
"The first observer only watches."
She pointed at the increasingly dark corridor ahead.
"The second observer... sometimes speaks."
Their steps began moving again.
But now the corridor felt narrower.
Longer.
As if this place itself was beginning to change.
The light from Lyra's artifact weakened slightly.
The black mist floating in the air began gathering more densely.
Then—
a voice emerged.
Not a voice that was truly heard.
More like something thinking too hard inside Kael's head.
"Finally."
Kael immediately stopped walking.
Lyra also stopped.
"You heard that?" Kael asked.
Lyra looked at him sharply.
"Heard what?"
Kael touched his temple.
"Someone speaking."
Lyra immediately muttered softly.
"That's it."
Kael frowned.
"That's who?"
Lyra answered in a serious tone.
"The second observer."
That voice emerged again in Kael's head.
Clearer now.
"Interesting."
"Someone opened that book... and still lives."
Kael looked around the corridor.
"Show yourself."
Lyra immediately whispered harshly.
"Don't provoke something we can't even see!"
But that voice seemed amused.
"Brave."
"Or foolish."
The mist in the corridor moved slowly.
But not like before.
This time the small shadows retreated.
As if giving space.
Something was coming.
Lyra felt that change.
Her face became pale.
"We have to go. Now."
Kael did not move.
That voice spoke again.
"I am curious."
"Do you know what that mark means?"
The symbol on Kael's wrist suddenly blazed brighter.
Kael answered softly,
"No."
The voice laughed lightly.
But that laugh had no human emotion.
More like an echo from a very vast empty space.
"Good."
"People who know too much usually die too quickly."
The mist in the corridor finally began forming something.
Unclear.
Unstable.
But enough to show presence.
A tall silhouette appeared at the end of the corridor.
Having no face.
Having no fixed form.
But something about it made the air feel heavy.
All small shadows around the corridor bowed down.
As if that creature was something far older.
Lyra whispered.
"That is not its true form."
Kael asked.
"Then what is it?"
Lyra answered in a low voice.
"A projection."
The silhouette moved one step forward.
The corridor trembled slightly.
The voice in Kael's head spoke again.
"Let us see..."
"Whether you are merely coincidence... or something truly interesting."
The symbol on Kael's hand suddenly blazed bright.
The cracks within it spread slightly.
The book in Lyra's hand opened again.
The page wrote quickly.
Ink almost dripped from the paper.
Kael read that sentence.
And for the first time since all this began...
he felt something truly dangerous.
The writing said:
"If it decides to test you..."
Several seconds later the second sentence emerged.
"...then your journey may end here."
