Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The First Words

Morning came quietly.

No alarms.

No shouting.

No sound of steel.

Just the soft rustling of leaves outside and the faint warmth of sunlight slipping through the window.

Alias was already awake.

He lay still on the small bed, staring at the wooden ceiling above him.

Watching.

Listening.

Thinking.

"…Language."

The word lingered in his mind.

Yesterday, he had lost.

Not in battle.

Not against a stronger enemy.

But to something far simpler.

Words.

Alias slowly sat up.

His small body resisted at first—stiff, uncoordinated—but he pushed through it.

Balance.

Control.

He was improving.

"…One step at a time."

His feet touched the floor.

Cold.

Real.

He stood.

Carefully.

One step.

Then another.

No falling this time.

"…Good."

He walked toward the door.

Slower than he wanted.

But steady.

The moment he stepped outside—

The world greeted him.

The scent of soil.

The sound of wind brushing through trees.

Distant voices.

Life.

His mother, Emi, was kneeling near a small wooden basin, washing something with calm, practiced movements.

Water moved gently with her hands.

"Alias?" she noticed him.

"You're up early."

Alias looked at her.

Watched her lips.

Listened carefully.

Every sound mattered now.

"…A-lia-s…"

His name.

He repeated it in his mind.

Again.

And again.

"Alias."

But when he tried to speak—

"Ah…"

Emi smiled softly.

"You're trying to talk?"

Alias frowned slightly.

"…Trying?"

"I am talking."

But what came out was:

"Ah…"

Emi laughed quietly.

"Not yet, okay? You'll get there."

Alias stared at her.

"…Not yet."

He didn't like those words.

But—

He understood them.

For now.

Time passed.

Minutes turned into hours.

Alias stayed close.

Watching.

Listening.

Every movement his mother made.

Every word she spoke.

When she picked up a cup—

"Water."

Alias's eyes followed.

"Wa…ter…"

The sound echoed in his thoughts.

When she placed food on the table—

"Eat."

"…Eat."

Simple.

Short.

Clear.

Alias memorized everything.

Not like a child.

Like a soldier preparing for war.

Later, his father, Haruki, returned.

Carrying tools.

His steps heavier, but steady.

"I'm back," he said.

Alias turned instantly.

"…Back."

Another word.

Haruki noticed him watching.

"Oh?"

He set his things down.

"Studying me now?"

Alias blinked.

"…Studying."

A new word.

Important.

Haruki crouched slightly, meeting his gaze.

"What's wrong? Thinking about something?"

Alias stared at him.

"…Everything."

But out loud—

"Ah."

Haruki chuckled.

"Still a quiet one."

Afternoon came slowly.

The sun climbed higher.

Then began to fall.

Alias sat near the doorway again.

The same place as before.

But this time—

He wasn't just looking.

He was listening.

Children played outside.

Their voices loud.

Carefree.

Alias focused.

Words overlapped.

Sounds mixed together.

Fast.

Messy.

"…Too fast."

He couldn't keep up.

His brow furrowed.

"…Slow down."

But they didn't.

They laughed.

Ran.

Shouted.

Alias exhaled slowly.

"…Then I'll adapt."

Evening arrived.

The sky dimmed.

The air cooled.

Inside the house, a small meal was prepared.

Alias sat between his parents.

Quiet as always.

Emi placed food in front of him.

"Eat."

Alias looked at it.

Then at her.

"…Eat."

He reached forward.

Slowly.

Awkwardly.

But this time—

He didn't hesitate.

He tried.

And that was enough.

Emi smiled.

"Good."

"…Good."

Another word.

Alias repeated it silently.

Night fell.

The house grew quiet.

No more voices.

No more movement.

Only stillness.

Alias lay in bed again.

Staring at the ceiling.

The same position.

The same silence.

But something was different.

"…I learned."

Not everything.

Not even close.

But something.

Words.

Sounds.

Meaning.

Small pieces.

"…It's working."

Slow.

Frustrating.

But working.

Alias closed his eyes.

"…I'll keep going."

"No shortcuts."

"No rushing."

"Step by step."

The wind whispered softly outside.

And in the quiet darkness—

A boy who once led a rebellion…

Began learning how to speak.

Again.
