Chapter 32 – The Rescue That Never Happened
Northern Syria – February 2014
The sound of helicopter blades cut through the darkness of the Syrian desert, moving like shadows over a sea of sand and ruins. The cold night air did nothing to cool Jason Gibbs's hot blood as he checked his equipment one last time.
The mission was clear.
Rescue American and foreign hostages held by ISIS.
Among them, a young woman named Kayla Mueller, a humanitarian captured in 2013.
But Jason already knew what to expect.
Nothing ever went as planned.
Hours earlier, at a secret Delta Force base, Jason and his team were gathered around a screen displaying satellite images.
CIA intelligence officer Daniel Reese ran his fingers over a detailed map of the city of Raqqa, an ISIS stronghold.
"Our source indicates that Kayla Mueller and other hostages are being held in this compound," he pointed to an isolated building, surrounded by high walls and guard posts.
Hawk, the team leader, crossed his arms.
"Visual confirmation?"
Reese hesitated.
"Negative. But we have radio intercepts and drones showing unusual movement at the location. If she's alive, it's here."
Jason looked at Hawk.
"Do we have time for reconnaissance before going in?"
Hawk shook his head.
"Negative. We need to get in and out before they can react."
Jason exhaled slowly.
High priority. Rapid infiltration. Immediate extraction.
The kind of mission that only ended two ways: total success or disaster.
The muffled sound of the MH-60 Black Hawk helicopter engines echoed in the night sky as the Delta Force team prepared for the HALO jump.
Jason adjusted his thermal sight, surveying the complex below.
No sign of hostages. Only enemy combatants.
Hawk looked at him.
"If they're there, we'll find them. If not… we'll make a mess and get out."
Jason simply nodded.
"Let's hunt them down."
Hell Begins
The helicopters hovered a few meters above the ground, and Jason and his team jumped quickly, weapons raised.
First contact came too quickly.
"CONTACT!" Fox shouted.
Gunfire cut through the silence, lights exploded in the complex, and the rescue mission turned into an instant battle.
Jason advanced through the gunfire, eliminating an insurgent who tried to raise an AK-47.
— Move! Clear the perimeter! — Hawk ordered.
The team swept the corridors, moving like lethal shadows, eliminating any threat.
But there were no hostages.
Only ISIS cells prepared to fight to the death.
The Void of Failure
Jason broke down the last door, pointing his weapon inside.
Nothing.
Just an empty room, mattresses strewn on the floor… and no trace of the hostages.
Fox entered right behind him.
— Shit… they weren't here.
Jason gritted his teeth.
— Intelligence failed.
Hawk confirmed over the radio.
— Target not located. Clear and retreat.
Jason looked around, his chest tight.
They came to rescue living people.
But they only found dead enemies.
Extraction and Reflection
As the extraction helicopters arrived, Jason looked at the destroyed city below.
The war would continue.
The hostages were still out there, somewhere.
And Jason knew this mission didn't end there.
He wouldn't rest until he found those responsible.
Chapter 33 – The Dark Truth
Delta Force Secret Base – Iraq – April 2014
The air inside the operations center was heavy. No one spoke, but the silence screamed louder than any conversation.
Jason Gibbs watched the screen in front of him, where a recently released ISIS video played silently.
Kayla Mueller's face was there.
The young humanitarian, kidnapped by the terrorist group in 2013, now appeared in the hands of her captors, shortly before her death.
The video caption stated that she and other hostages had died in an American bombing.
But Jason knew that was a lie.
He felt his stomach churn at the sight of the images.
Fox, sitting next to him, clenched his fists.
"Sons of bitches…"
Hawk, the team leader, crossed his arms and took a deep breath.
"This doesn't add up."
Jason looked at CIA intelligence officer Daniel Reese, who was at the back of the room, examining reports.
"Just tell us, Reese. What really happened?"
Reese looked at Jason and hesitated for a moment before finally speaking.
"We believe Kayla and the other hostages were murdered by ISIS itself."
Jason closed his eyes for a moment, controlling the anger that threatened to explode.
The entire room fell silent as Reese laid the evidence on the table.
"We intercepted communications between ISIS leaders shortly after our operation in February."
He pressed a button on the laptop and distorted audio began to play.
A voice in Arabic spoke rapidly.
Jason didn't need a translation. He spoke fluent Arabic.
But Reese explained anyway.
"The man in the audio confirms that Kayla Mueller and the other hostages were alive until a few days before our mission."
Jason took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the information. Reese continued.
"Shortly after our operation, they were transferred to another location."
Jason narrowed his eyes.
"So intelligence got the location wrong."
Reese nodded.
"Yes."
Fox slammed his fist on the table.
"Damn it! We were there! We could have caught those bastards!"
Jason maintained a rigid posture, but his eyes were full of contained fury.
Hawk asked:
"And what about the American bombing?"
Reese shook his head.
"That's ISIS propaganda. We know they killed Kayla and the others, but they used the air strikes as an excuse."
Jason clenched his fists.
"So they did that to demoralize us."
Reese confirmed.
"Exactly."
Jason stood up and began pacing the room, trying to contain his frustration.
Fox looked at him.
— What do we do now?
Jason stopped and looked at Hawk.
— We hunt them down.
Hawk nodded slowly.
— We already have a target in mind.
He picked up a dossier from the table and threw it in front of Jason.
Jason looked at the photo.
It was one of the ISIS leaders responsible for the hostages.
— His name is Abu Sayyaf. — Hawk said.
Jason looked up, his expression hard.
— Where is he?
Hawk smiled slightly.
— We'll find out.
Jason felt the anger transform into something more dangerous… determination.
Kayla and the others wouldn't be avenged with words.
But with bullets.
