Volume 2 — Chapter 7: Movements Beneath the Surface
The Void Castle stood silently upon the black mountain.
From a distance, the structure looked less like a castle and more like a distortion in reality itself. Its towering walls were formed from condensed Void energy, shifting slightly as if the structure were alive. Dark spires stretched into the sky, piercing the clouds above.
Around the mountain, thousands of monsters moved like silent sentinels.
Creatures from previous monster waves now guarded the territory naturally, as if obeying an instinctual command they themselves could not understand.
Above it all, the sky remained clear.
For now.
Inside the castle, the massive central hall was quiet.
Icarus Grimm sat upon a throne formed from dark crystalline Void matter. The throne itself had not been carved or constructed—it had simply been created through his authority over Void energy.
His posture was relaxed, yet his presence filled the entire hall with an oppressive calm.
A translucent black interface floated in front of him.
Nexus.
Lines of information scrolled across the display.
[Global Observation Report]
[Human population activity increasing.]
[Faction formation detected across multiple regions.]
Icarus stared at the information silently.
Across the vast dimension, humans had begun gathering.
Small groups had become armies.
Armies had begun forming factions.
And those factions were growing quickly.
But something else was beginning to shape the world as well.
Nexus continued its report.
[Divine energy signatures detected influencing multiple factions.]
[Infernal energy signatures detected influencing opposing factions.]
[Faction alignment beginning.]
Icarus spoke quietly.
"Explain."
The system responded.
[Analysis complete.]
[Major factions are aligning with external powers.]
A map of the world appeared in the air before him.
Points of light spread across continents and mountain ranges.
Some glowed faint gold.
Others burned crimson.
Several remained neutral.
Nexus continued.
[Heavens-aligned factions increasing rapidly.]
[Hells-aligned factions also expanding.]
[Estimated small factions choosing protection under greater powers.]
Icarus watched silently.
Humans were doing exactly what they always did.
Seeking protection.
Seeking power.
Seeking advantage.
The system continued.
[Several independent factions refusing alignment.]
[Independent factions avoiding large-scale conflict.]
These factions remained scattered across distant regions.
Small but cautious.
Groups that preferred survival over loyalty.
Groups that did not trust gods or devils.
They were building quietly.
Growing in secret.
Waiting.
Icarus's gaze lingered on those signals for a moment longer than the others.
Then the system continued.
[Estimated developing factions: 127.]
[Heavens influence detected in 39 factions.]
[Hells influence detected in 42 factions.]
[Independent factions: 46.]
The world was dividing itself.
Naturally.
From the far side of the hall, light footsteps echoed softly.
Seraphine entered the chamber.
Her silver hair swayed slightly as she walked forward, her expression relaxed and curious as always.
She stopped a few meters away from the throne and tilted her head.
"You look busy."
Icarus didn't respond.
Seraphine looked at the floating interface.
"Oh?"
She leaned slightly closer, reading the information.
"So the world is finally picking sides."
Her eyes moved across the map.
"Some kneeling to gods…"
"Some selling themselves to devils…"
She noticed the remaining clusters.
"And some trying to stay out of the war."
She laughed softly.
"That never works."
She turned and walked casually across the hall, observing the enormous chamber.
"Honestly, I was getting bored."
The castle interior was vast.
Massive pillars of dark stone stretched toward the ceiling. Strange Void symbols glowed faintly along the walls, shifting slowly like living language.
Seraphine brushed her fingers along one of the pillars as she walked.
"You know," she continued casually, "when factions start forming like this…"
She glanced back at him.
"War is coming."
Icarus replied simply.
"Yes."
Seraphine smiled slightly.
"Good."
Meanwhile Nexus continued analyzing the world.
[New data acquired.]
[Large-scale human migration detected.]
Icarus opened his eyes again.
"Location."
The system responded instantly.
[Multiple locations.]
A projection of the surrounding territory expanded.
Thousands of signals were moving across the plains.
Seraphine leaned forward.
"That's not a hunting party."
Nexus confirmed.
[Estimated participants: 43,000 individuals.]
Seraphine whistled softly.
"That's an army."
She studied the signals more carefully.
"Multiple faction banners…"
She smiled slightly.
"So this is interesting."
"Some heaven followers."
"Some hell followers."
"And a few desperate factions looking for protection."
They had united for a single reason.
Fear.
Fear of the Void.
Nexus continued.
[Several independent factions avoiding participation.]
[Neutral groups relocating further from Void territory.]
Seraphine chuckled.
"The smart ones are running away."
She looked toward the giant gates of the castle.
"But these ones…"
Her smile widened.
"They want to be heroes."
Icarus stood.
The movement was calm.
But the air in the hall changed instantly.
Void energy rippled outward like an invisible tide.
Seraphine watched him with quiet fascination.
"You're going to meet them?"
"Yes."
She followed a few steps behind him.
"Want help?"
Icarus didn't slow down.
"No."
Seraphine sighed dramatically.
"You never let me have any fun."
The massive gates opened slowly as they approached.
Outside, cold mountain wind swept across the platform.
Far in the distance, tiny flashes of movement could already be seen across the plains.
Thousands of humans marching forward.
Seraphine stepped out onto the cliffside platform.
She leaned slightly forward.
Even from this distance the scale was impressive.
Endless lines of warriors stretched across the plains.
Some carried glowing weapons.
Others wore armor blessed by divine energy.
Dark infernal flames burned around others.
Above them, several figures floated in the sky.
Observers.
Seraphine laughed softly.
"They brought spectators."
Icarus stepped forward.
Behind him—
His wings slowly emerged.
Reality twisted as they unfolded.
The sky itself seemed to bend around him.
Seraphine stepped back instinctively, smiling.
"Show-off."
Without another word—
Icarus stepped off the mountain.
His wings erupted outward.
The air exploded with force.
Within seconds he was already flying across the sky toward the approaching army.
Seraphine remained behind on the mountain.
Watching.
Her eyes followed his distant figure as he moved through the sky like a shadow cutting through clouds.
After a moment she sat casually on the stone edge of the platform.
Resting her chin on her hand.
Her eyes shone faintly with excitement.
"Forty thousand people…"
She smiled softly.
"They're going to learn something very unfortunate today."
Far away across the plains—
The marching army suddenly slowed.
One soldier pointed upward.
"Look!"
Thousands of heads turned toward the sky.
A single figure descended from the clouds.
Black wings spread wide.
Reality warping around him.
The soldiers felt it immediately.
Pressure.
Heavy.
Opppressive.
Terrifying.
The figure stopped in the air above them.
Watching silently.
And far away on the mountain—
Seraphine observed the scene with calm amusement.
Completely relaxed.
Because she already knew the outcome.
